Numerical solution of the viscous flow past a cylinder with a non-global yet spectrally convergent meshless collocation method
Proceeding of: 11th International Conference on Spectral and High-Order Methods (ICOSAHOM'16), June 27-July 1, 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The flow of a viscous fluid past a cylinder is a classical problem in fluid-structure interaction and a benchmark for numerical methods in computational fluid dynamics. We solve it with the recently introduced radial basis function-based partition of unity method (RBF-PUM), which is a spectrally convergent collocation meshless scheme well suited to this kind of problem. The resulting discrete system of nonlinear equations is tackled with a trust-region algorithm, whose performance is much enhanced by the analytic Jacobian which is provided alongside. Preliminary results up to Re = 60 with just 1292 nodes are shown.F. Bernal acknowledges support from FCT grant SFRH/BPD/79986/2011 and INESC-ID. A. Polarization squeezing of intense pulses with a fiber Sagnac interferometer
We report on the generation of polarization squeezing of intense, short light
pulses using an asymmetric fiber Sagnac interferometer. The Kerr nonlinearity
of the fiber is exploited to produce independent amplitude squeezed pulses. The
polarization squeezing properties of spatially overlapped amplitude squeezed
and coherent states are discussed. The experimental results for a single
amplitude squeezed beam are compared to the case of two phase-matched,
spatially overlapped amplitude squeezed pulses. For the latter, noise variances
of -3.4dB below shot noise in the S0 and the S1 and of -2.8dB in the S2 Stokes
parameters were observed, which is comparable to the input squeezing magnitude.
Polarization squeezing, that is squeezing relative to a corresponding
polarization minimum uncertainty state, was generated in S1.Comment: v4: 2 small typos corrected v3: misc problems with Tex surmounted -

Teleportation of continuous variable polarisation states
This paper discusses methods for the optical teleportation of continuous
variable polarisation states. We show that using two pairs of entangled beams,
generated using four squeezed beams, perfect teleportation of optical
polarisation states can be performed. Restricting ourselves to 3 squeezed
beams, we demonstrate that polarisation state teleportation can still exceed
the classical limit. The 3-squeezer schemes involve either the use of quantum
non-demolition measurement or biased entanglement generated from a single
squeezed beam. We analyse the efficacies of these schemes in terms of fidelity,
signal transfer coefficients and quantum correlations
Limiting forms for surface singularity distributions when the field point is on the surface
Scalar and vector mathematical identities involving an integral of singularities distributed over a surface and sometimes over a field can be employed to define field values of a quantity of interest. As the volume excluding the singular point from the field tends to zero, the field value is derived. The expressions that result become singular as the point of interest in the field approaches the boundary. Derivation of limiting integral expressions as the field point tends to the surface having a distribution of first and second degree singularities is the main task reported. The limiting expressions for vector values require evaluation as generalized Cauchy Principal-Value Integrals for which some aspect of symmetry in a local region excluding the singularity is required. A contribution from the integral over the local region doubles the value of the identities at a point on the boundary. For a doublet distribution, a singular term arises from the local-region integration that cancels a similar singularity in the integral over the remaining surface. This local contribution for doublets depends explicitly upon the shape of the local region as well as non-orthogonality of the surface coordinate axes. The resulting expressions for surface integrals reproduce known relations for line integrals in two-dimensional fields.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42699/1/10665_2004_Article_BF00058433.pd
Oscillations of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid
We present an experimental study of the motion of a solid sphere falling
through a wormlike micellar fluid. While smaller or lighter spheres quickly
reach a terminal velocity, larger or heavier spheres are found to oscillate in
the direction of their falling motion. The onset of this instability correlates
with a critical value of the velocity gradient scale
s. We relate this condition to the known complex rheology of wormlike
micellar fluids, and suggest that the unsteady motion of the sphere is caused
by the formation and breaking of flow-induced structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Atmospheric Channel Characteristics for Quantum Communication with Continuous Polarization Variables
We investigate the properties of an atmospheric channel for free space
quantum communication with continuous polarization variables. In our
prepare-and-measure setup, coherent polarization states are transmitted through
an atmospheric quantum channel of 100m length on the roof of our institute's
building. The signal states are measured by homodyne detection with the help of
a local oscillator (LO) which propagates in the same spatial mode as the
signal, orthogonally polarized to it. Thus the interference of signal and LO is
excellent and atmospheric fluctuations are autocompensated. The LO also acts as
spatial and spectral filter, which allows for unrestrained daylight operation.
Important characteristics for our system are atmospheric channel influences
that could cause polarization, intensity and position excess noise. Therefore
we study these influences in detail. Our results indicate that the channel is
suitable for our quantum communication system in most weather conditions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Applied Physics B following an

Steady water waves with multiple critical layers: interior dynamics
We study small-amplitude steady water waves with multiple critical layers.
Those are rotational two-dimensional gravity-waves propagating over a perfect
fluid of finite depth. It is found that arbitrarily many critical layers with
cat's-eye vortices are possible, with different structure at different levels
within the fluid. The corresponding vorticity depends linearly on the stream
function.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. As accepted for publication in J. Math. Fluid

Stokes-operator-squeezed continuous-variable polarization states
We investigate nonclassical Stokes-operator variances in continuous-wave polarization-squeezed laser light generated from one and two optical parametric amplifiers. A general expression of how Stokes-operator variances decompose into two-mode quadrature operator variances is given. Stokes parameter variance spectra for four different polarization-squeezed states have been measured and compared with a coherent state. Our measurement results are visualized by three-dimensional Stokes-operator noise volumes mapped on the quantum Poincare sphere. We quantitatively compare the channel capacity of the different continuous-variable polarization states for communication protocols. It is shown that squeezed polarization states provide 33% higher channel capacities than the optimum coherent beam protocol
