EAGLEView: A surface and grid generation program and its data management
An old and proven grid generation code, the EAGLE grid generation package, is given an added dimension of a graphical interface and a real time data base manager. The Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Panel Library is used for the graphical user interface. Through the panels, EAGLEView constructs the EAGLE script command and sends it to EAGLE to be processed. After the object is created, the script is saved in a mini-buffer which can be edited and/or saved and reinterpreted. The graphical objects are set-up in a linked-list and can be selected or queried by pointing and clicking the mouse. The added graphical enhancement to the EAGLE system emphasizes the unique capability to construct field points around complex geometry and visualize the construction every step of the way
The Stochastic Dynamics of Rectangular and V-shaped Atomic Force Microscope Cantilevers in a Viscous Fluid and Near a Solid Boundary
Using a thermodynamic approach based upon the fluctuation-dissipation theorem
we quantify the stochastic dynamics of rectangular and V-shaped microscale
cantilevers immersed in a viscous fluid. We show that the stochastic cantilever
dynamics as measured by the displacement of the cantilever tip or by the angle
of the cantilever tip are different. We trace this difference to contributions
from the higher modes of the cantilever. We find that contributions from the
higher modes are significant in the dynamics of the cantilever tip-angle. For
the V-shaped cantilever the resulting flow field is three-dimensional and
complex in contrast to what is found for a long and slender rectangular
cantilever. Despite this complexity the stochastic dynamics can be predicted
using a two-dimensional model with an appropriately chosen length scale. We
also quantify the increased fluid dissipation that results as a V-shaped

The Glasgow outcome at discharge scale: an inpatient assessment of disability after brain injury
This study assesses the validity and reliability of the Glasgow Outcome at Discharge Scale (GODS), which is a tool that is designed to assess disability after brain injury in an inpatient setting. It is derived from the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOS-E), which assesses disability in the community after brain injury. Inter-rater reliability on the GODS is high (quadratic-weighted kappa 0.982; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.968, 0.996) as is concurrent validity with the Disability Rating Scale (DRS) (Spearman correlation −0.728; 95% CI −0.819, −0.601). The GODS is significantly associated with physical and fatigue subscales of the short form (SF)-36 in hospital. In terms of predictive validity the GODS is highly associated with the GOS-E after discharge (Spearman correlation 0.512; 95% CI 0.281, 0.687), with the DRS, and with physical, fatigue, and social subscales of the SF-36. The GODS is recommended as an assessment tool for disability after brain injury pre-discharge and can be used in conjunction with the GOS-E to monitor disability between hospital and the community
Monte Carlo aided design of the inner muon veto detectors for the Double Chooz experiment
The Double Chooz neutrino experiment aims to measure the last unknown
neutrino mixing angle theta_13 using two identical detectors positioned at
sites both near and far from the reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power
plant. To suppress correlated background induced by cosmic muons in the
detectors, they are protected by veto detector systems. One of these systems is
the inner muon veto. It is an active liquid scintillator based detector and
instrumented with encapsulated photomultiplier tubes. In this paper we describe
the Monte Carlo aided design process of the inner muon veto, that resulted in a
detector configuration with 78 PMTs yielding an efficiency of 99.978 +- 0.004%
for rejecting muon events and an efficiency of >98.98% for rejecting correlated
events induced by muons. A veto detector of this design is currently used at
the far detector site and will be built and incorporated as the muon
identification system at the near site of the Double Chooz experiment

Recently, voter ID laws have been instituted, modified or overturned in many states in the US. As these laws change, it is important to have accurate measures of their impact. We present the data collection methods and results of class projects that attempted to quantify the impact of the voter ID laws in areas of three states. We also summarize the types of data used to assess the impact of voter ID laws and discuss how our data address some of the shortcomings of the usual techniques for assessing the impact of voter ID laws

Analysing changes to the flow of public funding within local health and care systems: An adaptation of the System of Health Accounts framework to a local health system in England
Financial flows relating to health care are routinely analysed at national and international level. They have rarely been systematically analysed at local level, despite sub-national variation due to population needs and decisions enacted by local organisations. We illustrate an adaptation of the System of Health Accounts framework to map the flow of public health and care funding within local systems, with an application for Greater Manchester (GM), an area in England which agreed a health and social care devolution deal with the central government in 2016. We analyse how financial flows changed in GM during the four years post-devolution, and whether spending was aligned with local ambitions to move towards prevention of ill-health and integration of health and social care. We find that GM decreased spending on public health by 15%, and increased spending on general practice by 0.1% in real terms. The share of total local expenditure paid to NHS Trusts for general and acute services increased from 70.3% to 71.6%, while that for community services decreased from 11.7% to 10.3%. Results suggest that GM may have experienced challenges in redirecting resources towards their goals. Mapping financial flows at a local level is a useful exercise to examine whether spending is aligned with system goals and highlight areas for further investigation
Normalized Double-Talk Detection Based on Microphone and AEC Error Cross-correlation
In this paper, we present two different double-talk detection schemes for Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC). First, we present a novel normalized detection statistic based on the cross-correlation coefficient between the microphone signal and the cancellation error. The decision statistic is designed in such a way that it meets the needs of an optimal double-talk detector. We also show that the proposed detection statistic converges to the recently proposed normalized cross-correlation based double-talk detector, the best known cross-correlation based detector. Next, we present a new hybrid double-talk detection scheme based on a cross-correlation coefficient and two signal detectors. The hybrid algorithm not only detects double-talk but also detects and tracks any echo-path variations efficiently.
