Dissolving Dualism in Medicine: Reuniting the Body and Mind through Patient Narratives

This paper looks at how the practice of health care tends to follow a dualistic system of thought, seeing the mind and body as distinct. Approaching patients in this way leads to a failure to understand them in a unified and holistic way, often leaving patients feeling less than “healed” and often facing “crises” that go beyond their physiological illness or ailment. This paper critiques this dualistic trend in medicine and looks at some of the ways in which this divide might be bridged through the inclusion of practices being developed by the emerging field of Medical Humanities

What lies beneath: offshore data acquisition and how we turn those data into science

Detailed and accurate mapping of the marine environment is important for a number of stakeholder groups, including energy companies (oil and gas, and, increasingly, offshore renewables), policy groups who require environmental data for marine spatial planning, resource and conservation management, and academic researchers who aim to better understand the processes that initially formed, and continue to shape these environments. Since the 1960s both industry and researchers alike have undertaken systematic exploration of the UK offshore territory (e.g. Gatliff et al. 1994; Johnson et al. 1993; Ritchie et al. 2011 and references therein). More than 11,000 industry exploration and production wells, and 580 scientific boreholes have been acquired in UK waters. Other physical sampling techniques such as Shipek Grabs that sample the seabed sediments, vibrocorers, gravity corers, piston corers and rock corers total more than 45,000 samples in the territorial waters of the United Kingdom (UK). Integration of these physical samples with 2D and 3D seismic reflection data, and with multibeam echosounder data facilitate the production of detailed maps and an improved understanding of our offshore area. International programmes such as the International Ocean Discovery Program, are also a means by which researchers can acquire offshore data. This paper briefly summarises both traditional techniques and the development of newer tools for offshore data acquisition. Upper Range Thermal Stress Tolerance in Channel and Hybrid Catfish Strains

Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) have a broad distribution from Canada to Mexico, suggesting that different strains may have different thermal tolerances. In aquaculture, daily temperature maximums up to 36-40°C and fluctuations of 3-6°C occur, and may be exacerbated by future climate change. To quantify differences in thermal tolerance amongst geographically-distinct channel catfish strains and corresponding hybrid catfish (I. punctatus x [blue catfish] I. furcatus): acute critical thermal maximum (CTmax), and the effects of chronic thermal regimes on growth, survival and differential gene expression were examined. Southern channel catfish had higher CTmax than northern, and channel catfish had higher CTmax than hybrid catfish. Under chronic thermal stress, hybrid catfish had the greatest survival and most consistent growth. Further, northern channel catfish had the greatest magnitude and largest amount of upregulated gene transcripts in response to high temperatures, indicating greater thermal stress. Municipalities Could Provide Valuable Second-Life Uses of Electric Vehicle Li-Ion Batteries While Legislators and Manufacturers Refine Safe Recycling and Disposal Practices

As consumers are embracing emerging electric vehicles (EVs) as an important step to take in combating climate change, the reality is that the EV solution has some serious short-term issues to address, especially when evaluating the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) that power most EVs. This comment first discusses the potential problems associated with the lack of recycling and disposal technology as well as regulations that are available for EV LIBs. Even though consumers and regulators alike are supportive that fossil fuel-burning internal combustion engines need to be replaced with cleaner transportation options such as EVs, policies, and proclamations are still subject to the intricacies and timelines of evolving technology. That means that until EV technology becomes routine, recycling practices and associated legislation are subject to too much fluctuation to create concrete standards. So, what does society do with the EV LIBs between now and that future time? One answer this comment provides is that sustainability-committed municipalities could promote valuable second-life reuse options for EV LIBs. Furthermore, this comment suggests Orlando, Florida, is an excellent example of a pioneer city to exhibit how to incorporate spent EV LIBs within their self-governing powers and in conjunction with the technological partnerships they have cultivated with industry and academia. By linking the city’s commitments to sustainability, renewable energy, and innovation, Orlando has an opportunity to show other cities in Florida and across the U.S. how local self- governed municipalities can solve newly evolving issues associated with these advancing technologies in the void of federal and state legislation, regulations and mandates

James Hogg, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and romantic anachronism

Thesis (M.A.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2013This thesis explores the problematic nature of the term "Romanticism" as traditionally dictated by national and temporal constraints. Most scholars and literary institutions (i.e., anthologies) define Romanticism as a solely European phenomenon of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This definition, intentionally or not, serves an elitist function in assuming that only Europeans of a specific era were capable of producing texts with Romantic qualities. Further, even authors who fall into this temporal and nationalistic category are often excluded due to their social class. This thesis seeks to extend the boundaries of Romanticism through examining two authors who, despite some recent efforts at re-appropriation, had previously been excluded by Romanticism: Scotland's James Hogg (1770-1835) and Russia's Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881). Specifically, this thesis explores a defining Romantic aesthetic trait -- the Romantic Anachronism -- as it operates in both authors' uncannily similar masterworks, Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824), and Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov (1880). Authentic Leadership, Leader-Member Exchange, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Multilevel Analysis

This field study examined the relationship between leaders’ authentic leadership (as rated by leader and follower) and five constructs of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) (altruism, civic virtue, conscientiousness, courtesy, and sportsmanship) as moderated by leader-member exchange. Data were collected from 32 leader participants and 243 raters from seven for-profit organizations in the Midwest. A multilevel data analysis was conducted using Hierarchical Linear Modeling. Three of the five OCB constructs (conscientiousness, courtesy, and civic virtue) were analyzed as multi-level. Altruism and sportsmanship were analyzed using regression. First, the direct effect of the leader’s level of authentic leadership was tested on each of the OCB constructs. Leaders rating as authentic had a positive effect on follower altruistic behavior (helping behaviors). Leaders rating as authentic had a positive effect on civic virtue and courtesy at the group level. This means that leader authenticity, influences behaviors that support the organization (civic virtue) and foster organizational communication (courtesy). Leader authenticity was significant at the individual level, but not at the group level in conscientiousness. Leaders rated as authentic only influence individual followers behaviors regarding rules and regulations. The leader will not influence the group. Leader authenticity did not influence follower sportsmanship behaviors. Leader-member exchange (LMX) was examined as a moderating variable. LMX positively moderated the relationship between authentic leadership and altruism – high LMX will yield followers’ engagement in altruistic behaviors. The constructs of conscientiousness and courtesy were partially moderated by LMX. LMX moderated conscientiousness at the individual level, but not at the group level, indicating LMX has a positive effect on individual conscientious behaviors – but not the overall group. In courtesy, LMX was significant at the group level, but only within groups. LMX will only influence courteous behaviors on a group by group basis. Comparisons between groups are not possible. Civic virtue and sportsmanship were not moderated by LMX.
