Assistant practitioners (APs) perceptions of their developing role and practice in radiography: Results from a national survey
Introduction: In 2000, the NHS Plan set out the government's plans for investment and reform across the NHS. Through the introduction of a new workforce at assistant practitioner (AP) level the Department of Health intended to implement new ways in which to deliver a more efficient service. At the time, little published information existed on the integration of these assistants into the contemporary radiography workforce. Publications were limited to experiences gained by various individual departments ranging in their perception of the role and education of APs. Further research was suggested to track the continuing implementation of the 4-tier structure, establish the precise nature and scope of the roles across Trusts and determine their impact on workload and patient care. Aim: To establish the number and employment locality of APs in radiography professions in England, and to explore their scope of applied practice. Method and materials: The study was conducted over three phases and employed a mixed methods design to address the aims and objectives. Phase I was a scoping exercise performed prior to data collection in which n = 226 radiography sites were identified for contact across England. Phase II utilized a questionnaire as data collection tool to investigate the role of APs in radiography and explore how their roles were integrated into the radiography workforce in England. Results from phase III of the study which utilized semi-structured qualitative interviews are not included in this paper. Conclusion and discussion: Key findings depict the nature and variety of roles and responsibilities undertaken by APs in radiography. This study was the first of its kind to identify the integration of APs in radiography across a sizable geographical region. There were mixed responses to the question asking APs if they were required to perform duties outside their scope of practice. Questionnaire data revealed that a high numbers of APs were working in areas under indirect supervision. Results from this study showed that APs, in some areas at least, were performing the roles of practitioners. Therefore further investigation is needed for new roles to develop criteria to determine which new roles should be the subject of statutory regulation. © 2011 The College of Radiographers
Polarized beam operation of the Hybrid Spectrometer at the pulsed Spallation Neutron Source
The concept of a neutron Hybrid Spectrometer (HYSPEC) combines the
time-of-flight spectroscopy with the focusing Bragg optics and incorporates a
polarized beam option. Here we describe the polarization analysis scheme
proposed for HYSPEC and quantify its performance via the Monte-Carlo
simulations. We find that the broadband supermirror-bender transmission
polarizers provide reasonably good polarization analysis capability within
about 8-10 meV energy window for scattered neutron energies in the thermal
range up to about 25 meV.Comment: Preprint, to appear in Physica B. 10 pages, 4 figure

Occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in surface waters near industrial hog operation spray fields
Industrial hog operations (IHOs) have been identified as a source of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). However, few studies have investigated the presence of antibiotic-resistant S. aureus in the environment near IHOs, specifically surface waters proximal to spray fields where IHO liquid lagoon waste is sprayed. Surface water samples (n = 179) were collected over the course of approximately one year from nine locations in southeastern North Carolina and analyzed for the presence of presumptive MRSA using CHROMagar MRSA media. Culture-based, biochemical, and molecular tests, as well as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry were used to confirm that isolates that grew on CHROMagar MRSA media were S. aureus. Confirmed S. aureus isolates were then tested for susceptibility to 16 antibiotics and screened for molecular markers of MRSA (mecA, mecC) and livestock adaptation (absence of scn). A total of 12 confirmed MRSA were detected in 9 distinct water samples. Nine of 12 MRSA isolates were also multidrug-resistant (MDRSA [i.e., resistant to ≥ 3 antibiotic classes]). All MRSA were scn-positive and most (11/12) belonged to a staphylococcal protein A (spa) type t008, which is commonly associated with humans. Additionally, 12 confirmed S. aureus that were methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) were recovered, 7 of which belonged to spa type t021 and were scn-negative (a marker of livestock-adaptation). This study demonstrated the presence of MSSA, MRSA, and MDRSA in surface waters adjacent to IHO lagoon waste spray fields in southeastern North Carolina. To our knowledge, this is the first report of waterborne S. aureus from surface waters proximal to IHOs
Multiband superconductivity in NbSe_2 from heat transport
The thermal conductivity of the layered s-wave superconductor NbSe_2 was
measured down to T_c/100 throughout the vortex state. With increasing field, we
identify two regimes: one with localized states at fields very near H_c1 and
one with highly delocalized quasiparticle excitations at higher fields. The two
associated length scales are most naturally explained as multi-band
superconductivity, with distinct small and large superconducting gaps on
different sheets of the Fermi surface.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, submitted to M2S-Rio 2003 Proceeding
Statistics of Coulomb blockade peak spacings for a partially open dot
We show that randomness of the electron wave functions in a quantum dot
contributes to the fluctuations of the positions of the conductance peaks. This
contribution grows with the conductance of the junctions connecting the dot to
the leads. It becomes comparable with the fluctuations coming from the
randomness of the single particle spectrum in the dot while the Coulomb
blockade peaks are still well-defined. In addition, the fluctuations of the
peak spacings are correlated with the fluctuations of the conductance peak
heights.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
Phytohemagglutinin-Induced Mitotic Index in Blood Lymphocytes: A Potential Biomarker for Breast Cancer Risk
Background Cell proliferation is associated with the pathogenesis of cancer because it provides opportunities for accumulating genetic mutations. However, biomarkers of cell proliferation in response to environmental stimuli have not been adequately explored for breast cancer risk. Methods In a case-control study of 200 breast cancer patients and 360 healthy controls, we investigated the association between phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced mitotic index in blood lymphocyte and breast cancer risk. Results Having high mitotic index (>3.19%) was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, with adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of 1.54 (1.03–2.30) and 2.03 (1.18–3.57) for all women and post-menopausal women, respectively. Mitotic index was correlated with some reproductive factors and body mass index in controls. Conclusions Our data suggest increased PHA-induced mitotic index in blood lymphocytes is associated with an increased breast cancer risk and that this association may be modulated by reproductive and other hormones
