‘Infelix Dido’: a creative re-visioning of Virgil’s queen of Carthage and a critical exploration of pity and pathos in Gavin Douglas’s Eneados.

Both components of this project emerge in response to Virgil’s Aeneid. The fifty-thousand-word critical thesis explores aspects of pathos and pity in the Eneados, Gavin Douglas’s pioneering 1513 translation of Virgil’s Aeneid and Maphaeus Vegius’s supplementary ‘Thirteenth Book’. Chapter 1 examines the ways in which Douglas intensifies the pathos inherent in Virgil’s text yet also, via the translated text and accompanying prologues, alerts readers to its potentially dangerous and seductive qualities. Aeneas’s pietas is the subject of chapter 2, and the ways in which Douglas’s expansive conception of pietas as, amongst other things, ‘reuth’, as well as the slippage of the term towards both piety and pity, complicates some of the tensions inherent in Virgil’s text. Chapter 3 explores the function and significance of numerous laments in the first twelve books of the Eneados and the extent to which Douglas’s translations reproduce or even amplify their pathos via his own particular lexis of grief. The conclusion turns to the laments for Turnus in Douglas’s translation of Vegius’s ‘Thirteenth Book’ and the ways in which some of the tensions between pathos, pity and pietas might be resolved. The creative element – a book-length collection of poems – re-envisions Virgil’s Dido, the figure who attracts arguably the most troubling pathos and sympathy in the Aeneid but who has been granted only limited attention by contemporary writers. Most of the poems are in Dido’s voice, expanding upon her story as related in the Aeneid, with particular reference to her Mediterranean crossing, as explored via a series of metaphors for the sea. Also included are sonnets based upon particular Latin and Phoenician terms, some of which – perhaps somewhat paradoxically – allow for a broader and more contemporary frame of reference and, alongside the narrative poems, help to bring the classical myth more vividly into 21st-century vernacular

Factors determining the integration of nutritional genomics into clinical practice by registered dietitians

YesPersonalized nutrition has the potential to improve health, prevent disease and reduce healthcare expenditure. Whilst research hints at positive consumer attitudes towards personalized nutrition that draws upon lifestyle, phenotypic and genotypic data, little is known about the degree to which registered dietitians (RD) are engaged in the delivery of such services. This review sought to determine possible factors associated with the integration of the emerging science of Nutritional Genomics (NGx) into the clinical practice setting by practicing registered dietitians. Scope Search of online databases (Pubmed; National Library of Medicine; Cochrane Library; Ovid Medline) was conducted on material published from January 2000 to December 2014. Studies that sampled practicing dietitians and investigated integration or application of NGx and genetics knowledge into practice were eligible. Articles were assessed according to the American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. Key findings Application of nutritional genomics in practice has been limited. Reluctance to integrate NGx into practice is associated with low awareness of NGx, a lack of confidence in the science surrounding NGx and skepticism toward Direct to consumer (DTC) products. Successful application to practice was associated with knowledge about NGx, having confidence in the science, a positive attitude toward NGx, access to DTC products, a supportive working environment, working in the clinical setting rather than the public health domain and being in private rather than public practice. Conclusions There is a need to provide RGs with a supportive working environment that provides ongoing training in NGx and which is integrated with clinical practice

Building a bridge over troubled waters : an analysis of fishers’ trust in UK fisheries management

    1. Effective management of fisheries relies on high levels of trust between the fishing industry and managers and scientists. We therefore used an online questionnaire to examine how well the UK fishing industry trusted the key governing and scientific bodies, and how the views of fishers aligned with UK Governments stated management goals and measures. 2. Participants in our study had low levels of trust in nearly all the institutions included in the survey, however, there was high variation between individual responses. Only the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) had a mean score above 3 of out 5, significantly higher than Defra, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and NGOs. 3. The management goals of fishers aligned well with several goals from Defra’s 25-year Environment Plan, particularly sustainability and the need to protect the seabed. However, increasing the coverage of marine protected areas (MPAs) was the least popular goal among participants. Increased use of selectivity devices was most favoured as a management tool, while MPAs were again the least popular. 4. More encouragingly, those fishers who had previously collaborated with scientists and managers showed higher levels of trust across the board. We recommend increased use of fishing industry-science partnerships and co-management as key ways to increase trust as the UK seeks to reform and improve its management of fisheries after Brexit

Chronic amphetamine enhances visual input to and suppresses visual output from the superior colliculus in withdrawal

Heightened distractibility is a core symptom of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Effective treatment is normally with chronic orally administered psychostimulants including amphetamine.Treatment prevents worsening of symptoms but the site of therapeutic processes, and their nature, is unknown. Mounting evidence suggests that the superior colliculus (SC) is a key substrate in distractibility and a therapeutic target, so we assessed whether therapeutically-relevant changes are induced in this structure by chronic oral amphetamine. We hypothesized that amphetamine would alter visual responses and morphological measures. Six-week old healthy male rats were treated with oral amphetamine (2, 5 or 10 mg/kg) or a vehicle for one month after which local field potential and multiunit recordings were made from the superficial layers of the SC in response to whole-field light flashes in withdrawal. Rapid Golgi staining was also used to assess dendritic spines, and synaptophysin staining was used to assess synaptic integrity. Chronic amphetamine increased local field potential responses at higher doses, and increased synaptophysin expression, suggesting enhanced visual input involving presynaptic remodelling. No comparable increases in multiunit activity were found suggesting a mphetamine suppresses collicular output activity, counterbalancing the increased input. We also report, for the first time, five different dendritic spine types in the superficial layers and show these to be unaffected by amphetamine, indicating that suppression does not involve gross postsynaptic structural alterations. In conclusion, we suggest that amphetamine produces changes at the collicular level that potentially stabilise the structure and may prevent the worsening of symptoms in disorders like ADHD

A Model of Tuberculosis Screening for Pregnant Women in Resource-Limited Settings Using Xpert MTB/RIF

    Get PDF
Timely diagnosis and treatment of maternal tuberculosis (TB) is important to reduce morbidity and mortality for both the mother and child, particularly in women who are coinfected with HIV. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the integration of TB/HIV screening into antenatal services but available diagnostic tools are slow and insensitive, resulting in delays in treatment initiation. Recently the WHO endorsed Xpert MTB/RIF, a highly sensitive, real-time PCR assay for Mycobacterium tuberculosis that simultaneously detects rifampicin resistance directly from sputum and provides results within 100 minutes. We propose a model for same-day TB screening and diagnosis of all pregnant women at antenatal care using Xpert MTB/RIF. Pilot studies are urgently required to evaluate strategies for the integration of TB screening into antenatal clinics using new diagnostic technologies
