Ventilation of small livestock trailers
A large number of livestock is transported to market in small box trailers. The welfare
of animals transported in this way is now assuming greater importance with the onset
of tougher EU legislation. This paper presents the first study into the ventilation of
small livestock trailers using experimental and computational methods. Wind tunnel
studies, using a 1/7th scale model, highlight the important influence of the towing
vehicle and trailer design on the airflow within the trailer. Detailed CFD analysis
agrees well with the wind tunnel data and offers the ability to assess the impact of
design changes
Particle physics models of inflation
Inflation models are compared with observation on the assumption that the
curvature perturbation is generated from the vacuum fluctuation of the inflaton
field. The focus is on single-field models with canonical kinetic terms,
classified as small- medium- and large-field according to the variation of the
inflaton field while cosmological scales leave the horizon. Small-field models
are constructed according to the usual paradigm for beyond Standard Model

Revisiting the calculations of inflationary perturbations
We present a new approximation scheme that allows us to increase the accuracy
of analytical predictions of the power spectra of inflationary perturbations
for two specific classes of inflationary models. Among these models are chaotic
inflation with a monomial potential, power-law inflation and natural inflation
(inflation at a maximum). After reviewing the established first order results
we calculate the amplitudes and spectral indices for these classes of models at
higher orders in the slow-roll parameters for scalar and tensorial

Observational constraints on an inflation model with a running mass
We explore a model of inflation where the inflaton mass-squared is generated
at a high scale by gravity-mediated soft supersymmetry breaking, and runs at
lower scales to the small value required for slow-roll inflation. The running
is supposed to come from the coupling of the inflaton to a non-Abelian gauge
field. In contrast with earlier work, we do not constrain the magnitude of the
supersymmetry breaking scale, and we find that the model might work even if
squark and slepton masses come from gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. With
the inflaton and gaugino masses in the expected range, and
in the range to (all at the high scale) the model can give
the observed cosmic microwave anisotropy, and a spectral index in the observed
range. The latter has significant variation with scale, which can confirm or

Modular Cosmology, Thermal Inflation, Baryogenesis and Predictions for Particle Accelerators
Modular cosmology is plagued by overproduction of unwanted relics, gravitinos
and especially moduli, at relatively low energy scales. Thermal inflation
provides a compelling solution to this moduli problem, but invalidates most
baryogenesis scenarios. We propose a simple model in which the MSSM plus
neutrino mass term is supplemented by a minimal flaton sector to
drive the thermal inflation, and make two crucial assumptions: the flaton
vacuum expectation value generates the -term of the MSSM and . The second assumption is particularly interesting in that it
violates a well known constraint, implying that there exists a nearby deep
non-MSSM vacuum, and provides a clear signature of our model which can be
tested at future particle accelerators. We show that our model leads to thermal
inflation followed by Affleck-Dine leptogenensis along the flat
direction. A key feature of our leptogenesis scenario is that the flat
direction is also induced to temporarily acquire a large value, playing a
crucial role in the leptogenesis, as well as dynamically shielding the field
configuration from the deep non-MSSM minimum, ensuring that the fields relax

Electromagnetic field angular momentum in condensed matter systems
Various electromagnetic systems can carry an angular momentum in their {\bf
E} and {\bf B} fields. The electromagnetic field angular momentum (EMAM) of
these systems can combine with the spin angular momentum to give composite
fermions or composite bosons. In this paper we examine the possiblity that an
EMAM could provide an explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE)
which is complimentary to the Chern-Simons explanation. We also examine a toy
model of a non-BCS superconductor (e.g. high superconductors) in terms of
an EMAM. The models presented give a common, simple picture of these two
systems in terms of an EMAM. The presence of an EMAM in these systems might be
tested through the observation of the decay modes of a charged, spin zero

Hybridized Affleck-Dine baryogenesis
We propose a novel scenario for Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in the braneworld,
considering the hybrid potential for the Affleck-Dine field. Destabilization of
the flat direction is not due to the Hubble parameter, but is induced by a
trigger field. The moduli for the brane distance plays the role of the trigger

Duality Invariance of Cosmological Perturbation Spectra
I show that cosmological perturbation spectra produced from quantum
fluctuations in massless or self-interacting scalar fields during an
inflationary era remain invariant under a two parameter family of
transformations of the homogeneous background fields. This relates slow-roll
inflation models to solutions which may be far from the usual slow-roll limit.
For example, a scale-invariant spectrum of perturbations in a minimally
coupled, massless field can be produced by an exponential expansion with

Inflation from Susy quantum cosmology
We propose a realization of inverted hybrid inflation scenario in the context
of n=2 supersymmetric quantum cosmology. The spectrum of density fluctuations
is calculated in the de Sitter regimen as a function of the gravitino and the
Planck mass, and explicit forms for the wave function of the universe are found

Oscillations During Inflation and the Cosmological Density Perturbations
Adiabatic (curvature) perturbations are produced during a period of
cosmological inflation that is driven by a single scalar field, the inflaton.
On particle physics grounds -- though -- it is natural to expect that this
scalar field is coupled to other scalar degrees of freedom. This gives rise to
oscillations between the perturbation of the inflaton field and the
perturbations of the other scalar degrees of freedom, similar to the phenomenon
of neutrino oscillations. Since the degree of the mixing is governed by the
squared mass matrix of the scalar fields, the oscillations can occur even if
the energy density of the extra scalar fields is much smaller than the energy
density of the inflaton field. The probability of oscillation is resonantly
amplified when perturbations cross the horizon and the perturbations in the
inflaton field may disappear at horizon crossing giving rise to perturbations
in scalar fields other than the inflaton. Adiabatic and isocurvature
perturbations are inevitably correlated at the end of inflation and we provide
a simple expression for the cross-correlation in terms of the slow-roll
