On the locus formed by the maximum heights of projectile motion with air resistance

We present an analysis on the geometrical place formed by the set of maxima of the trajectories of a projectile launched in a media with linear drag. Such a place, the locus of apexes, is written in term of the Lambert WW function in polar coordinates, confirming the special role played by this function in the problem. In order to characterize the locus, a study of its curvature is presented in two parameterizations, in terms of the launch angle and in the polar one. The angles of maximum curvature are compared with other important angles in the projectile problem. As an addendum, we find that the synchronous curve in this problem is a circle as in the drag-free case.Comment: 7 pages, 6 color eps figures. Synchronous curve added. Typos and style corrected

Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) after high-dose melphalan in patients with advanced colon cancer.

Nine patients with progressive, metastatic disease from primary carcinoma of the colon were entered into a phase I/II study using continuous intravenous infusions of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and high dose melphalan (120 mg m-2). GM-CSF was given alone to six patients during the first part of the study to determine a dose that would produce a peripheral leucocyte count (WCC) greater than or equal to 50 X 10(9) 1(-1) and was initially given at 3 micrograms kg-1 day-1 and escalated to 10 micrograms kg-1 day-1 after 10 days. The infusion was discontinued when the WCC exceeded 50 X 10(9) 1(-1) and after a gap of one week, melphalan was given over 30 min. GM-CSF was recommenced 8 h later and was continued until the neutrophil count had exceeded 0.5 X 10(9) 1(-1) for greater than 1 week. One patient achieved a WCC greater than 50 X 10(9) 1(-1) with GM-CSF 3 micrograms kg-1 day-1, but the other five who entered this phase of the study required dose escalation to 10 micrograms kg-1. No toxicity attributed to GM-CSF was seen. After melphalan, the median times to severe neutropenia (less than 0.5 X 10(9) 1(-1] and thrombocytopenia (greater than 20 X 10(9) 1(-1] were 6 and 9 days respectively. The median durations of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were 14 and 10 days respectively. All patients required intensive support with a median duration of inpatient stay of 24 days. There was one treatment related death due to renal failure. One complete and two partial remissions (33% response rate) were seen but these were of short duration (median of 10 weeks). This study demonstrates that GM-CSF given by continuous intravenous infusion produces significant increments of peripheral granulocyte counts at 3 and 10 micrograms kg-1 day-1 and is not associated with any toxicity. The duration of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia induced by high-dose melphalan appears to be reduced by the subsequent administration of GM-CSF to times which are at least as short as have been reported in historical series which have used autologous bone marrow rescue

The Ontology of Intentional Agency in Light of Neurobiological Determinism: Philosophy Meets Folk Psychology

The moot point of the Western philosophical rhetoric about free will consists in examining whether the claim of authorship to intentional, deliberative actions fits into or is undermined by a one-way causal framework of determinism. Philosophers who think that reconciliation between the two is possible are known as metaphysical compatibilists. However, there are philosophers populating the other end of the spectrum, known as the metaphysical libertarians, who maintain that claim to intentional agency cannot be sustained unless it is assumed that indeterministic causal processes pervade the action-implementation apparatus employed by the agent. The metaphysical libertarians differ among themselves on the question of whether the indeterministic causal relation exists between the series of intentional states and processes, both conscious and unconscious, and the action, making claim for what has come to be known as the event-causal view, or between the agent and the action, arguing that a sort of agent causation is at work. In this paper, I have tried to propose that certain features of both event-causal and agent-causal libertarian views need to be combined in order to provide a more defendable compatibilist account accommodating deliberative actions with deterministic causation. The ‘‘agent-executed-eventcausal libertarianism’’, the account of agency I have tried to develop here, integrates certain plausible features of the two competing accounts of libertarianism turning them into a consistent whole. I hope to show in the process that the integration of these two variants of libertarianism does not challenge what some accounts of metaphysical compatibilism propose—that there exists a broader deterministic relation between the web of mental and extra-mental components constituting the agent’s dispositional system—the agent’s beliefs, desires, short-term and long-term goals based on them, the acquired social, cultural and religious beliefs, the general and immediate and situational environment in which the agent is placed, etc. on the one hand and the decisions she makes over her lifetime on the basis of these factors. While in the ‘‘Introduction’’ the philosophically assumed anomaly between deterministic causation and the intentional act of deciding has been briefly surveyed, the second section is devoted to the task of bridging the gap between compatibilism and libertarianism. The next section of the paper turns to an analysis of folk-psychological concepts and intuitions about the effects of neurochemical processes and prior mental events on the freedom of making choices. How philosophical insights can be beneficially informed by taking into consideration folk-psychological intuitions has also been discussed, thus setting up the background for such analysis. It has been suggested in the end that support for the proposed theory of intentional agency can be found in the folk-psychological intuitions, when they are taken in the right perspective

Coupled Numerical Analysis of Variations in the Capacity of Driven Energy Piles in Clay

Energy piles are an emerging alternative for the reduction of energy consumption to heat and cool buildings. Most of the research to date has focused on thermodynamic properties or axial and radial stress and strain of piles. This paper focuses on the effects of temperature fluctuation on the capacity of driven energy piles in clayey soils. Consolidation of clay surrounding driven piles affects the pile capacity (i.e., set up in clay). The heating and cooling periods of energy piles can create the excess pore-water pressure (EPWP, ue) or relax the existing one (e.g., due to pile driving or previous thermal loads) in clayey soils (due to the contraction and expansion of water) affecting the pile capacity. In the meantime, the thermal expansion and contraction of the pile also generate or relax the EPWP in the soil, which can be computed using the cavity-expansion theory. This paper studies the resulting changes in the pile capacity due to the daily and seasonal thermal cycles. The results show that thermal cycles in an energy pile can cause a decrease in the pile capacity leading to a delay in reaching the capacity after a complete clay set up

(G)hosting television: Ghostwatch and its medium

This article’s subject is Ghostwatch (BBC, 1992), a drama broadcast on Halloween night of 1992 which adopted the rhetoric of live non-fiction programming, and attracted controversy and ultimately censure from the Broadcasting Standards Council. In what follows, we argue that Ghostwatch must be understood as a televisually-specific artwork and artefact. We discuss the programme’s ludic relationship with some key features of television during what Ellis (2000) has termed its era of ‘availability’, principally liveness, mass simultaneous viewing, and the flow of the television super-text. We trace the programme’s television-specific historicity whilst acknowledging its allusions and debts to other media (most notably film and radio). We explore the sophisticated ways in which Ghostwatch’s visual grammar and vocabulary and deployment of ‘broadcast talk’ (Scannell 1991) variously ape, comment upon and subvert the rhetoric of factual programming, and the ends to which these strategies are put. We hope that these arguments collectively demonstrate the aesthetic and historical significance of Ghostwatch and identify its relationship to its medium and that medium’s history. We offer the programme as an historically-reflexive artefact, and as an exemplary instance of the work of art in television’s age of broadcasting, liveness and co-presence
