This cartoon entitled “The Fool Pied Piper,” that was published in Puck Magazine June 2, 1909 shows American distaste for immigration to the United States. It portrays Uncle Sam as the Pied Piper, leading rats across the ocean toward the Statue of Liberty with a pipe that is labeled “Lax Immigration Laws.” The rats are labeled “Murderer,” “Thief”, “Kidnapper,” and “Assassin.” Some rats are carrying papers that say “The Black Hand.” Meanwhile, leaders and citizens of the countries the rats are leaving are cheering the rats’ departure

Materials in the built environment - Whole life energy / carbon

Buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of global CO2 emissions one quarter of these being Embodied Carbon, which is front loaded to the construction period (months) in comparison to operational carbon emissions which usually occur over decades. Emerging concern about this issue is noted to have driven recent guidance publications and a few countries are preparing legislation to address the issue. The opportunities with most impact lie at the planning and design stage and require a committed client to ensure that early decisions are carried through to completion. This paper analyses the whole life carbon emissions for four façade options in a case study. Three further case studies are analysed for the impact of material choice on embodied and operational carbon emissions. All case studies show potential carbon savings depending on material choice. Even with minor carbon savings for one unit, there is potential for increased saving across multiple units (e.g. hotels and dwellings). Finally, opportunities to utilize waste products are considered, not only reducing carbon emissions, but meeting the Circular Economy principle of “keep products and materials in use”

Giving voice to equitable collaboration in participatory design

An AHRC funded research project titled Experimenting with the Co-experience Environment (June 2005 – June 2006) culminated in a physical environment designed in resonance with a small group of participants. The participants emerged from different disciplines coming together as a group to share their expertise and contribute their knowledge to design. They engaged in storytelling, individual and co-thinking, creating and co-creating, sharing ideas that did not require justification, proposed designs even though most were not designers …and played. The research questioned how a physical environment designed specifically for co-experiencing might contribute to new knowledge in design? Through play and by working in action together the participants demonstrated the potential of a physical co-experience environment to function as a scaffold for inter-disciplinary design thinking,saying, doing and making (Ivey & Sanders 2006). Ultimately the research questioned how this outcome might influence our approach to engaging participants in design research and experimentation

Topic Map Presentation Framework: an Approach to Delivering Newspaper Content Over the Web

This paper will discuss some of the requirements for the successful online delivery of newspaper archive content to users and examine an innovative approach taken to fulfil those requirements by using a semantic framework. This approach is based on the digital library delivery system configured by the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre (NZETC), the working name of which is the Topic Map Presentation Framework (TMPF). It has been developed as a production system at the NZETC since 2002 and is currently used to deliver the Centre’s own growing collection of digital resources, a nationally important website containing more than 40,000 pages and over halfamillion hyperlinks. Since 2005 the NZETC has been working with APEX to further develop the TMPF as means of providing sophisticated access to digitised newspaper archives wherein the semantic navigation of online resources greatly enhances the user experience in digital libraries. Using this approach, an ontology codifies an analysis of the structure and relationships in the domain of newspaper publishing and archiving, including publishers, issues, articles, pages, clippings, places, and dates. Metadata is automatically harvested from the source materials into this conceptual framework, producing a map of the content. This map is then used to present the content online in a meaningful structure. This paper will also briefly cover some of the open technologies used, including Topic Maps, the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model, Apache Cocoon, and Apache Lucene
