    Preliminary geologic mapping near the Nilosyrtis Mensae, Mars

    Virtually the entire map area is mantled by an irregular deposit of material that is apparently fine-grained and erodible. It is also extremely young, as there is not a single crater larger than 1 km in the map area that was emplaced atop the mantle. Knobs abound in the study area; many are presumably caused by the mantling of pre-existing topography. In many cases the older knob of the core is exposed. Many such knob cores are surrounded by small scarplets; it is not yet clear whether the scarplets are the eroded edges of mantle beds that at one time draped over the knob core and have been subsequently exposed by erosion, or whether they are eroded versions of lobate debris aprons. Many craters in the study area contain concentric crater fill, which may indicate downslope movement of volatile-rich materials or repeated cycles of aeolian gradation

    Geologic mapping of MTM quads 40292 and 40297: In the Utopian lowlands north of the Nilosyrtis Mensae, Mars

    Geologic mapping at 1:500,000 scale of the Mars transverse Mercator (MTM) quads 40292 and 40297 is being conducted under the auspices of the Mars Geologic Mapping Program. The study area is located in the southwestern portion of Utopia Planitia immediately north of the Nilosyrtis Mensae, between latitudes 37.5 and 42.5 degrees and longitudes 290 and 300 degrees. The goals of the mapping are to identify the major geologic features in the study area and to determine the sequence and scope of the geologic events that have modified the lowland side of the global dichotomy boundary in this region in order to at least partially constrain models of dichotomy boundary origin and evolution. The progress made towards achieving these goals is reported

    Limits on the Halo White Dwarf Component of Baryonic Dark Matter from the {\em Hubble Deep Field}

    The MACHO collaboration lensing event statistics suggest that a significant fraction of the dark galactic halo can be comprised of baryonic matter in the form of white dwarf stars with masses between 0.1 and 1.0 \Msun . Such a halo white dwarf population, in order to have escaped detection by those who observe the white dwarf luminosity function of the disk, must have formed from an old population. The observations indicate that the number of halo white dwarfs per cubic parsec per unit bolometric magnitude is less than 10510^{-5} at 104.510^{-4.5}\Lsun; the number must rise significantly at lower luminosities to provide the needed baryonic halo mass. Such white dwarfs may easily escape detection in most current and earlier surveys. Though it is limited in angular extent, the {\em Hubble Deep Field} (HDF) probes a sufficient volume of the galactic halo to provide interesting limits on the number of halo white dwarf stars, and on the fraction of the halo mass that they can make up. If the HDF field can be probed for stars down to V=29.8V=29.8 then the MACHO result suggests that there could be up to 12 faint halo white dwarfs visible in the HDF. Finding (or not finding) these stars in turn places interesting constraints on star formation immediately following the formation of the galaxy.Comment: 10 pages, AASTEX, 1 table, no figures, accepted for publication in Ap.J.     We describe a system for meta-analysis where a wiki stores numerical data in a simple format and a web service performs the numerical computation. We initially apply the system on multiple meta-analyses of structural neuroimaging data results.     Reconstructing the World of the Anorectic Outpatient: Procedures for Enhancing Trustworthiness and Credibility

    Conducting in-depth interviews with clinical populations often poses a number of problems for qualitative researchers. Because of the skewed perception of themselves and the world around them, and because of their propensity to distort and deny the pathology of their illness, anorexic women are an example of one such group that can create possible problems for researchers, particularly those concerned with the trustworthiness and credibility of their analysis. How should qualitative researchers approach this population? How can a credible reconstruction of reality be produced? This paper explores and discusses the procedures utilized by the authors during an 18-month project in which semi-structured, ethnographic interviews were conducted with 28 outpatients at an eating disorder treatment facility. This paper describes the methods employed by the authors to enhance the epistemological authority and trustworthiness of the analysis. These included: 1) a multi-disciplinary team approach with researchers and consultants from mass communication, family science, and clinical psychology, 2) weekly researcher team debriefing sessions to analyze and interpret recently completed interviews, 3) the exchange of thoughts and ideas from researcher diaries, journals, and coding memos, 4) the use of recovered anorexic patients as research assistants to help in the interpretation of interviews and to perform member checks, and 5) periodic debriefing sessions with therapists at the center where the project\u27s informants were being treated
