    A Pilot Stability Study of Dehydroepiandrosterone Rapid-dissolving Tablets Prepared by Extemporaneous Compounding

    Dehydroepiandrosterone supplementation is used to treat a variety of conditions. Rapid-dissolving tablets are a relatively novel choice for compounded dehydroepiandrosterone dosage forms. While rapid-dissolving tablets offer ease of administration, there are uncertainties about the physical and chemical stability of the drug and dosage form during preparation and over long-term storage. This study was designed to evaluate the stability of dehydroepiandrosterone rapid-dissolving tablets just after preparation and over six months of storage. The Professional Compounding Centers of America rapid-dissolving tablet mold and base formula were used to prepare 10-mg strength dehydroepiandrosterone rapid-dissolving tablets. The formulation was heated at 100°C to 110°C for 30 minutes, released from the mold, and cooled at room temperature for 30 minutes. The resulting rapid-dissolving tablets were individually packaged in amber blister packs and stored in a stability chamber maintained at 25°C and 60% relative humidity. The stability samples were pulled at pre-determined time points for evaluation, which included visual inspection, tablet weight check, United States Pharmacopeia disintegration test, and stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatography. The freshly prepared dehydroepiandrosterone rapiddissolving tablets exhibited satisfactory chemical and physical stability. Time 0 samples disintegrated within 40 seconds in water kept at 37°C. The highperformance liquid chromatographic results confirmed that the initial potency was 101.9% of label claim and that there was no chemical degradation from the heating procedure. Over six months of storage, there were no significant changes in visual appearance, physical integrity, or disintegration time for any of the stability samples. The high-performance liquid chromatographic results also indicated that dehydroepiandrosterone rapid-dissolving tablets retained \u3e95% label claim with no detectable degradation products. The dehydroepiandrosterone rapid-dissolving tablets investigated in this pilot study were physically and chemically stable during preparation and over six months of storage at 25°C and 60% relative humidity

    Pseudospin-1 Physics of Photonic Crystals.

    We review some recent progress in the exploration of pseudospin-1 physics using dielectric photonic crystals (PCs). We show some physical implications of the PCs exhibiting an accidental degeneracy induced conical dispersion at the Γ point, such as the realization of zero refractive index medium and the zero Berry phase of a loop around the nodal point. The photonic states of such PCs near the Dirac-like point can be described by an effective spin-orbit Hamiltonian of pseudospin-1. The wave propagation in the positive, negative, and zero index media can be unified within a framework of pseudospin-1 description. A scale change in PCs results in a rigid band shift of the Dirac-like cone, allowing for the manipulation of waves in pseudospin-1 systems in much the same way as applying a gate voltage in pseudospin-1/2 graphene. The transport of waves in pseudospin-1 systems exhibits many interesting phenomena, including super Klein tunneling, robust supercollimation, and unconventional Anderson localization. The transport properties of pseudospin-1 systems are distinct from their counterparts in pseudospin-1/2 systems, which will also be presented for comparison

    An Approach to Gain Score Dependability & Validity for Criterion-Referenced Language Tests

    Much of the recent work on criterion-referenced language testing addresses the issues of item writing and cut score dependability. Cdterion-referenced item writing is centrally concemed with determining the content congruence and leamability of each item's content. Cut score dependability focuses on the consistency of decisions in repeated testing or the assessment of language leamer performances. A more general issue related to language program development also involves empirical rationalization of cut score decisions. In this case the issue is of determining the optimal index of gain score dependability in the pre-instruction and post-instruction approach to assessing the language learning gains. The present paper examines a commonly used approach to assessing gain score dependability. Thc optimal index of gain score dependability is derived from examining the cut score dependability of the pre-instructional administration of the criterion-referenced test as well as the postinstructional criterion-referenced test, in relation to differences in the ratio of pre and post instruction variances. The database for the present paper comes from a preinstruction administration of an academic Iistening test followed by a counterbalanced post-instruction administration of an altemate form of the same test after one semester of instruction. The subjects were 213 advanced ESL learners at a large American university English language institute

    A Magnetic Model of the Tetragonal-Orthorhombic Transition in the Cuprates

    It is shown that a quasi two dimensional (layered) Heisenberg antiferromagnet with fully frustrated interplane couplings ({\it e.g.} on a body-centered tetragonal lattice) generically exhibits two thermal phase transitions with lowering temperature -- an upper transition at TTOT_{TO} (``order from disorder without order'') in which the lattice point-group symmetry is spontaneously broken, and a lower N\'{e}el transition at TNT_{N} at which spin-rotation symmetry is broken. Although this is the same sequence of transitions observed in La2_2CuO4_4, in the Heisenberg model (without additional lattice degrees of freedom) (TTOTN)/TN(T_{TO}-T_N) /T_N is much smaller than is observed. The model may apply to the bilayer cuprate La2_2CaCuO6_6, in which the transitions are nearly coincident.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Stability of Glutamate-Aspartate Cardioplegia Additive Solution in Polyolefin IV Bags

    Objective: Glutamate-aspartate cardioplegia additive solution (GACAS) is used to enhance myocardial preservation and left ventricular function during some cardiac surgeries. This study was designed to evaluate the stability of compounded GACAS stored in sterile polyolefin intravenous (IV) bags. The goal is to extend the default USP beyond-use date (BUD) and reduce unnecessary inventory waste. Methods: GACAS was compounded and packaged in sterile polyolefin 250 mL IV bags. The concentration was 232 mM for each amino acid. The samples were stored under refrigeration (2°C-8°C) and analyzed at 0, 1, and 2 months. At each time point, the samples were evaluated by pH measurement and visual inspection for color, clarity, and particulates. The samples were also analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for potency and degradation products. Due to the lack of ultraviolet (UV) chromophores of glutamate and aspartate, the samples were derivatized by ortho-phthalaldehyde prior to HPLC analysis. Results: The time zero samples of GACAS passed the physical, chemical, and microbiological tests. Over 2 months of storage, there was no significant change in pH or visual appearance for any of the stability samples. The HPLC results also indicated that the samples retained 101% to 103% of the label claim strengths for both amino acids. Conclusion: The physical and chemical stability of extemporaneously prepared GACAS has been confirmed for up to 2 months in polyolefin IV bags stored under refrigeration. With proper sterile compounding practice and microbiology testing, the BUD of this product can be extended to 2 months

We compare our agents\u27 behavior with that predicted by classical game theory, as well as behavior found in experimental (or behavioral) economics investigations. In particular, we study the following questions: How do artificial agents perform in playing the ultimatum game against fixed rules, dynamic rules, and rotating rules? How do coevolving artificial agents perform? Will learning software agents do better? What is the value of intelligence? What will happen when smart learning agents play against dumb (no-learning) agents? What will be the impact of agent memory size on performance? This exploratory study provides experimental results pertaining to these questions
