Helping Provisionally Licensed Middle School Science Teachers

    Get PDF
The New Science Teachers\u27 Support Network is a National Science Foundation-funded project that provides a multifaceted support system to provisionally licensed middle and high school science teachers. The teachers in this project were all hired to teach science, and had science degrees, but had little or no education coursework or background. Research is being conducted on the effectiveness of the support system we employed for these teachers, particularly on the factors that characterize the practice of new teachers, and on factors that lead to teacher success and teacher retention. In this paper, we describe the design of the study and the results from the one-year pilot study. We focus upon our observations and experiences with the middle school teachers in the group of participants; and, we close with preliminary recommendations for supporting provisionally licensed science teachers so they have the best chance of being successful and staying in the teaching profession

A New Technique for System-to-system Transfer of Surface Data

    Get PDF
The purpose is to describe a recently developed technique aimed at providing a universal interface between surface types. In brief, a software package was developed which functions a common denominator of CAD/CAM surface types. This software enable one to convert from any given surface representation to any other target representation. The tiles maintain the same slope continuity as the target surface gram, bicubic patches are used since they allow one to match point, slope, and twist vectors to the target surface. Thus, slopes can be continuous or discontinuous as they are on the target surface. The patches can be of lower order if desired. For example, if only point information is available, the patches produced will be bilinear; however, the number of patches required is likely to increase correspondingly. The patches can be of higher order although many systems will not accept patches of more than order four. The final result of the program is a rectangular grid of bicubic patches. The patches fit the target surface exactly at their corners. Also, the patch corners have the same tangent and twist vectors. Adjacent patches will have slope continuity, unless a discontinuity was indicated by the target surface

Marcus Dods : with special reference to his teaching ministry

Today -when the name of Marcus Dods is mentioned the first thought that comes to the minds of many is one that associates him either with a long probation or a heresy charge. Yet few facts pertaining to either of these experiences in his life are known. This is not surprising when we realize that a biography of this prominent Scotsman of the past has never been attempted nor is there much information about his life and work available in such volumes as the Dictionary of National Biography. It is the purpose of this study not only to shed light upon and interpret the significance of these two aspects of Dods' career, but also to focus attention upon his teaching ministry as the unifying feature of his life. It is in this way that we can determine his particular contributions to the nineteenth century church in Scotland.A complete account of the life of Marcus Dods has never been written. During his lifetime, various resumes were published in periodicals, but these' accounts lacked accuracy and detail. The most important period of his life—the probation years—remained concealed throughout the nineteenth century because Dods' own silence regarding his probationmeant that no reliable information was available prior to the posthumous publication of his early letters in 1910. Therefore, this chapter is devoted to his early life, with the most detailed treatment being given to his hitherto little known and little understood probation years. His own letters and other writings supplied the major sources from which this chapter was drawn. Extensive use was also made of numerous periodicals of the late nineteenth century.Although the full extent of his influence is not well known today, he made a deep impression upon the age in which he lived. His contributions were great measured in reference to the needs of his time. But his personal greatness consisted not so much in any special brilliance of talent or achievement as in the superlative degree in which he exhibited the qualities of human character and Christian faith which are open to all men
