Succession in the New Testament World

    Get PDF
This article surveys the use of succession as a concept in Mediterranean literature from around the time of the New Testament. Ancient Mediterranean writers and readers understood succession with much more variation and depth than is found in modern ecclesiological writings, where “succession” virtually always refers to “apostolic succession” in hierarchical denominational structure. The author demonstrates that literature from the ancient Mediterranean uses succession for a variety of objects and with a variety of degrees of replacement. The article concludes with readings of several New Testament passages where the more flexible understanding of succession is important for understanding the text

Evaluating high school mathematics performance measures and student attributes for predicting remedial mathematics success and student retention in college

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to evaluate multiple high school student attributes and performance measures that could be considered for use in predicting success in developmental mathematics courses and college-level math courses at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. This study also evaluated the predictive ability of the same high school student attributes and performance measures in determining first-year fall-to-fall retention rates for successful math students. The study population consisted of first-time freshmen who entered the case study institution in the fall semesters of 2010 through 2014 and graduated from West Virginia public high schools. The population was stratified by the developmental or college-level course in which the student enrolled. A stratified sample was selected from the population based on math course. Data for each student in the sample population was collected from high school transcripts and matched with additional student data in the university student database. Multiple statistical analyses were employed to determine the significance of each of the twelve independent variables in regard to student performance outcomes in developmental and college level math courses and fall-to-fall retention outcomes. High school overall GPA and high school math GPA significantly influenced more course outcomes than any other variables. Socioeconomic variables were significant in the course outcomes for MTH 098 and MTH 121. Variables were inconsistent in influencing retention outcomes

The challenge of parenting girls in neighborhoods of different perceived quality

It is well-known that disadvantaged neighborhoods, as officially identified through census data, harbor higher numbers of delinquent individuals than advantaged neighborhoods. What is much less known is whether parents’ perception of the neighborhood problems predicts low parental engagement with their girls and, ultimately, how this is related to girls’ delinquency, including violence. This paper elucidates these issues by examining data from the Pittsburgh Girls Study, including parent-report of neighborhood problems and level of parental engagement and official records and girl-reported delinquency at ages 15, 16, and 17. Results showed higher stability over time for neighborhood problems and parental engagement than girls’ delinquency. Parents’ perception of their neighborhood affected the extent to which parents engaged in their girls’ lives, but low parental engagement did not predict girls being charged for offending at age 15, 16 or 17. These results were largely replicated for girls’ self-reported delinquency with the exception that low parental engagement at age 16 was predictive of the frequency of girls’ self-reported delinquency at age 17 as well. The results, because of their implications for screening and early interventions, are relevant to policy makers as well as practitioners

    Sukcesija u doba Novog zavjeta

Myosin Va’s adaptor protein melanophilin enforces track selection on the microtubule and actin networks in vitro

    Get PDF
Significance Inner organization of eukaryotic cells intimately depends on the active transport of diverse intracellular cargo on the ubiquitous actin and microtubule networks. The underlying mechanisms of such directional transport processes have been of outstanding interest. We studied a motor complex composed of Rab27a, melanophilin, and myosin Va and found, surprisingly, that the adaptor protein melanophilin toggled the binding preference toward actin or microtubules in vitro. Our results offer unexpected mechanistic insights into biasing the directionality of a moving organelle on the cytoskeleton through phospho-targeting the adaptor protein rather than its motor in vivo.</jats:p

The Spatial and Temporal Expression Patterns of Integrin α9β1 and One of Its Ligands, the EIIIA Segment of Fibronectin, in Cutaneous Wound Healing

    Get PDF
The fibronectins (FN) comprise a family of adhesive extracellular matrix proteins thought to mediate important functions in cutaneous wounds. Plasma fibronectin (pFN) extravasates for days from intact hyperpermeable vessels following injury whereas mRNAs encoding the cellular fibronectins (cFN) that include two segments, termed EIIIA (EDA) and EIIIB (EDB), are expressed by wound cells. Wounds in mice null for pFN appear to heal normally whereas those in EIIIA null mice exhibit defects, suggesting that cFN may play a role when pFN is missing. Integrin α9β1, a receptor for several extracellular matrix proteins as well as the EIIIA segment, is expressed normally in the basal layer of squamous epithelia. We report results from immunohistochemistry on healing wounds demonstrating that EIIIA-containing cFN are deposited abundantly but transiently from day 4 to 7 whereas EIIIB-containing cFN persist at least through day 14. Elevated expression of α9β1 is seen in basal and suprabasal epidermal keratinocytes in wounds. The spatial expression patterns of cFN and α9β1 are distinct, but overlap in the dermal–epidermal junction, and both are expressed contemporaneously. These observations suggest a role for α9β1–EIIIA interactions in wound keratinocyte function
