    An Auger electron spectroscopy study of surface-preparation contaminants

    There are many cleaning techniques that are presently being employed for surface preparation of materials that are subsequently exposed to ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Unfortunately, there are virtually no comparative measurements which establish the residual contaminant level of each method. In this report, eleven different cleaning methods, ranging from only detergent cleaning to electrochemical polishing, were applied to identical samples of 347 stainless steel. Two surface conditions, a standard machined surface and a mechanically polished surface, were studied. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) within a UHV environment was then used to detect the types of contaminants and the magnitudes found on the sample surfaces. It was found that the electrochemical polishing gave the least contaminated surface of all metals studied and that mechanically polished surfaces were significantly cleaner than the as-machined surfaces for any given cleaning method. Furthermore, it was also found that the residual contaminations left by methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and freon finishing rinses are almost the same

    The techniques used for ingesting SEASAT-A SASS wind retrievals into the existing operational software are described. The intent is to assess the impact of SEASAT data in he marine wind fields produced by the global marine wind/sea level pressure analysis. This analysis is performed on a 21/2 deg latitude/longitude global grid which executes at three hourly time increments. Wind fields with and without SASS winds are being compared.     Regge Behaviour from an Environmentally Friendly Renormalization Group

    The asymptotic behaviour of cubic field theories is investigated in the Regge limit using the techniques of environmentally friendly renormalization, environmentally friendly in the present context meaning asymmetric in its momentum dependence. In particular we consider the crossover between large and small energies at fixed momentum transfer for a model scalar theory of the type phi^2 psi. The asymptotic forms of the crossover scaling functions are exhibited for all two particle scattering processes in this channel to one loop in a renormalization group improved perturbation theory.Comment: 9 pages text, one figure, LaTeX, uses psfig.sty.     Effect of Resin Molecular Weight on Bonding Flakeboard

    Information on the effect of resin molecular weight on flakeboard properties is limited. A commercial phenol formaldehyde flakeboard resin was separated into two molecular weight fractions by diafiltration. Aspen flakeboards were prepared with the different resin fractions. Penetration characteristics of the different fractions were determined microscopically. Results indicate that both low and high molecular weight components of the resin are needed to achieve optimum board properties
