Mutually unbiased measurements for high-dimensional time-bin based photonic states
The task of measuring in two mutually unbiased bases is central to many
quantum information protocols, as well as being of fundamental interest.
Increasingly, there is an experimental focus on generating and controlling
high-dimensional photonic states. One approach is to use the arrival time of a
photon, which can be split into discrete time bins. An important problem
associated with such states is the difficulty in experimentally realizing a
measurement that is mutually unbiased with respect to the time-of-arrival. We
propose a simple and compact scheme to measure in both the time of arrival
basis and a basis that is approximately mutually unbiased with respect to the

Information communicated by entangled photon pairs
A key goal of quantum communication is to determine the maximum number of
bits shared between two quantum systems. An important example of this is in
entanglement based quantum key distribution (QKD) schemes. A realistic
treatment of this general communication problem must take account of the
nonideal nature of the entanglement source and the detectors. The aim of this
paper is to give such a treatment. We obtain analytic expression for the mutual
information in terms of experimental parameters. The results are applied to
communication schemes that rely on spontaneous parametric down conversion to
generate entangled photons. We show that our results can be applied to tasks
such as calculating the optimal rate of bits per photon in high dimensional
time bin encoded QKD protocols (prior to privacy amplification). A key finding
for such protocols is that by using realistic experimental parameters, one can
obtain over 10 bits per photon. We also show how our results can be applied to
characterize the capacity of a fibre array and to quantify entanglement using

A microfluidic oligonucleotide synthesizer
De novo gene and genome synthesis enables the design of any sequence without the requirement of a pre-existing template as in traditional genetic engineering methods. The ability to mass produce synthetic genes holds great potential for biological research, but widespread availability of de novo DNA constructs is currently hampered by their high cost. In this work, we describe a microfluidic platform for parallel solid phase synthesis of oligonucleotides that can greatly reduce the cost of gene synthesis by reducing reagent consumption (by 100-fold) while maintaining a 100 pmol synthesis scale so there is no need for amplification before assembly. Sixteen oligonucleotides were synthesized in parallel on this platform and then successfully used in a ligation-mediated assembly method to generate DNA constructs 200 bp in length
Permutation Inference for Canonical Correlation Analysis
Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) has become a key tool for population
neuroimaging, allowing investigation of associations between many imaging and
non-imaging measurements. As other variables are often a source of variability
not of direct interest, previous work has used CCA on residuals from a model
that removes these effects, then proceeded directly to permutation inference.
We show that such a simple permutation test leads to inflated error rates. The
reason is that residualisation introduces dependencies among the observations
that violate the exchangeability assumption. Even in the absence of nuisance
variables, however, a simple permutation test for CCA also leads to excess
error rates for all canonical correlations other than the first. The reason is
that a simple permutation scheme does not ignore the variability already
explained by previous canonical variables. Here we propose solutions for both
problems: in the case of nuisance variables, we show that transforming the
residuals to a lower dimensional basis where exchangeability holds results in a
valid permutation test; for more general cases, with or without nuisance
variables, we propose estimating the canonical correlations in a stepwise
manner, removing at each iteration the variance already explained, while
dealing with different number of variables in both sides. We also discuss how
to address the multiplicity of tests, proposing an admissible test that is not
conservative, and provide a complete algorithm for permutation inference for

Roadway System Assessment Using Bluetooth-Based Automatic Vehicle Identification Travel Time Data
This monograph is an exposition of several practice-ready methodologies for automatic vehicle identification (AVI) data collection systems. This includes considerations in the physical setup of the collection system as well as the interpretation of the data. An extended discussion is provided, with examples, demonstrating data techniques for converting the raw data into more concise metrics and views. Examples of statistical before-after tests are also provided. A series of case studies were presented that focus on various real-world applications, including the impact of winter weather on freeway operations, the economic benefit of traffic signal retiming, and the estimation of origin-destination matrices from travel time data. The technology used in this report is Bluetooth MAC address matching, but the concepts are extendible to other AVI data sources
Studies on the sulfation of cellulose α-lipoate and ability of the sulfated product to stabilize colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles

A versatile method for the synthesis of cellulose α-lipoate with a low degree of substitution (DS) has been developed using N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA)/LiCl as a solvent and N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) as an esterification reagent. The cellulose α-lipoate with DS of α-lipoate groups of 0.26 was converted with sulfur trioxide-pyridine complex in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent. The sulfation is accompanied by an unexpected partial oxidation of the disulfide moiety leading to the formation of the corresponding stereoisomers of S-oxides. The resulting mixture of water-soluble cellulose α- and β-lipoate sulfate possesses a DS of sulfuric acid half ester groups of 1.78. This cellulose-α/β-lipoate sulfate derivative can be used as an effective stabilizer and solubilizer for the formation of colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles formed in situ in aqueous solution
The information of high-dimensional time-bin encoded photons
We determine the shared information that can be extracted from time-bin
entangled photons using frame encoding. We consider photons generated by a
general down-conversion source and also model losses, dark counts and the
effects of multiple photons within each frame. Furthermore, we describe a
procedure for including other imperfections such as after-pulsing, detector
dead-times and jitter. The results are illustrated by deriving analytic
expressions for the maximum information that can be extracted from
high-dimensional time-bin entangled photons generated by a spontaneous
parametric down conversion. A key finding is that under realistic conditions
and using standard SPAD detectors one can still choose frame size so as to
extract over 10 bits per photon. These results are thus useful for experiments
on high-dimensional quantum-key distribution system.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Changes in Purkinje cell firing and gene expression precede behavioral pathology in a mouse model of SCA2.
Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder, which is caused by a pathological expansion of a polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in the coding region of the ATXN2 gene. Like other ataxias, SCA2 most overtly affects Purkinje cells (PCs) in the cerebellum. Using a transgenic mouse model expressing a full-length ATXN2(Q127)-complementary DNA under control of the Pcp2 promoter (a PC-specific promoter), we examined the time course of behavioral, morphologic, biochemical and physiological changes with particular attention to PC firing in the cerebellar slice. Although motor performance began to deteriorate at 8 weeks of age, reductions in PC number were not seen until after 12 weeks. Decreases in the PC firing frequency first showed at 6 weeks and paralleled deterioration of motor performance with progression of disease. Transcription changes in several PC-specific genes such as Calb1 and Pcp2 mirrored the time course of changes in PC physiology with calbindin-28 K changes showing the first small, but significant decreases at 4 weeks. These results emphasize that in this model of SCA2, physiological and behavioral phenotypes precede morphological changes by several weeks and provide a rationale for future studies examining the effects of restoration of firing frequency on motor function and prevention of future loss of PCs
Portal vein thrombosis after laparoscopic splenectomy: an ongoing clinical challenge.
ObjectivesPortal vein thrombosis (PVT) following open splenectomy is a potentially lethal complication with an incidence of up to 6%. The objective of this report is to describe our management of a recent laparoscopic case, discuss current therapies, and consider antiplatelet therapy for prophylaxis.MethodsMedical records, laboratory studies, and imaging studies pertaining to a recent case of a laparoscopic splenectomy were examined. Current literature related to this topic was reviewed.ResultsA 16-year-old girl underwent laparoscopic splenectomy for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Her preoperative platelet count was 96K. She was discharged on postoperative day 1 after an uneventful operation including division of the splenic hilum with an endoscopic linear stapler. On postoperative day 20, she presented with a 5-day history of epigastric pain, nausea, and low-grade fevers without peritoneal signs. Her white blood cell count was 17.3; her platelets were 476K. Computed tomography demonstrated thrombosis of the splenic, superior mesenteric, and portal veins propagating into the liver. Heparinization was begun followed by an unsuccessful attempt at pharmacologic and mechanical thrombolysis by interventional radiology. Over the next 5 days, her pain resolved, she tolerated a full diet, was converted to oral anticoagulation and sent home. Follow-up radiographic studies demonstrated the development of venous collaterals and cavernous transformation of the portal vein.DiscussionNo standard therapy for PVT exists; several approaches have been described. These include systemic anticoagulation, systemic or regional medical thrombolysis, mechanical thrombolysis, and surgical thrombectomy. Unanswered questions exist about the most effective acute therapy, duration of anticoagulation, and the potential efficacy of routine prophylaxis with perioperative antiplatelet agents.
