What children know about the source of their knowledge without reporting it as the source
We argue that, amongst 3- to 5- year-olds, failure to report the source of knowledge recently acquired in answer to âHow do you knowâŠ?â is due to a specific failure to make a causal inference, in line with source monitoring theory but not fuzzy trace theory. In three Experiments, children (N = 37; 30; 59) identified a hidden toy by seeing, feeling, or by being told, having had two modes of access on each trial, one informative (e.g. seeing a toy identified by colour) and the other uninformative (e.g. being told the toyâs colour by the Experimenter who had only felt it). Children who answered the know question wrongly nevertheless reported accurately who saw and who felt the toy, and what the well-informed player had said. They also realised when
the Experimenterâs uninformative access implied their own knowledge was unreliable, suggesting precocious working understanding of knowledge sources
Proximity Effects and Nonequilibrium Superconductivity in Transition-Edge Sensors
We have recently shown that normal-metal/superconductor (N/S) bilayer TESs
(superconducting Transition-Edge Sensors) exhibit weak-link behavior.1 Here we
extend our understanding to include TESs with added noise-mitigating
normal-metal structures (N structures). We find TESs with added Au structures
also exhibit weak-link behavior as evidenced by exponential temperature
dependence of the critical current and Josephson-like oscillations of the
critical current with applied magnetic field. We explain our results in terms
of an effect converse to the longitudinal proximity effect (LoPE)1, the lateral
inverse proximity effect (LaiPE), for which the order parameter in the N/S
bilayer is reduced due to the neighboring N structures. Resistance and critical
current measurements are presented as a function of temperature and magnetic
field taken on square Mo/Au bilayer TESs with lengths ranging from 8 to 130
{\mu}m with and without added N structures. We observe the inverse proximity
effect on the bilayer over in-plane distances many tens of microns and find the
transition shifts to lower temperatures scale approximately as the inverse
square of the in- plane N-structure separation distance, without appreciable
broadening of the transition width. We also present evidence for nonequilbrium
superconductivity and estimate a quasiparticle lifetime of 1.8 \times 10-10 s
for the bilayer. The LoPE model is also used to explain the increased
conductivity at temperatures above the bilayer's steep resistive transition.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Downward shortwave surface irradiance from 17 sites for the FIRE/SRB Wisconsin experiment
A field experiment was conducted in Wisconsin during Oct. to Nov. 1986 for purposes of both intensive cirrus cloud measurments and SRB algorithm validation activities. The cirrus cloud measurements were part of the FIRE. Tables are presented which show data from 17 sites in the First ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) Regional Experiment/Surface Radiation Budget (FIRE/SRB) Wisconsin experiment region. A discussion of intercomparison results and calibration inconsistencies is also included

Adolescent dietary patterns are associated with lifestyle family psycho-social factors
Background/ Objectives: Dietary intake during adolescence contributes to lifelong eating habits and the development of early risk factors for disease in adulthood. Few studies have examined the dietary patterns of adolescents and the social and environmental factors that may affect them during this life stage. The present study describes dietary patterns in a cohort of adolescents and examines their associations with socioeconomic factors, as well as parental and adolescent risk factor behaviours.
Design: A semi quantitative FFQ was used to assess study adolescentsâ usual dietary intake over the previous year. Information was collected on family functioning and various socio economic and risk factor variables via questionnaire. Adolescents visited the clinic for anthropometric measurements.
Setting: The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort Study (Raine Study), Perth, Western Australia.
Subjects: Adolescents (n 1631) aged 14 years from a pregnancy cohort study.
Results: Factor analysis identified two distinct dietary patterns that differed predominantly in fat and sugar intakes. The âWesternâ pattern consisted of high intakes of take away foods, soft drinks, confectionery, French fries, refined grains, full fat dairy products and processed meats. The âHealthyââ pattern included high intakes of whole grains, fruit, vegetables, legumes and fish. ANOVA showed that the âWesternâ dietary pattern was positively associated with greater television viewing and having a parent that smoked, and was inversely associated with family income. The âHealthyââ pattern was positively associated with female gender, greater maternal education, better family functioning and being in a two parent family, and was inversely associated with television viewing.
Conclusions: This study suggests that both lifestyle factors and family psycho social environment are related to eating patterns in Australian adolescents
Exponentially Increasing Incidences of Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma in Europe Correlate with Low Personal Annual UV Doses and Suggests 2 Major Risk Factors
For several decades the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) steadily increased in fair-skinned, indoor-working people around the world. Scientists think poor tanning ability resulting in sunburns initiate CMM, but they do not understand why the incidence continues to increase despite the increased use of sunscreens and formulations offering more protection. This paradox, along with lower incidences of CMM in outdoor workers, although they have significantly higher annual UV doses than indoor workers have, perplexes scientists. We found a temporal exponential increase in the CMM incidence indicating second-order reaction kinetics revealing the existence of 2 major risk factors. From epidemiology studies, we know one major risk factor for getting CMM is poor tanning ability and we now propose the other major risk factor may be the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) because clinicians find ÎČ HPVs in over half the biopsies. Moreover, we uncovered yet another paradox; the increasing CMM incidences significantly correlate with decreasing personal annual UV dose, a proxy for low vitamin D3 levels. We also discovered the incidence of CMM significantly increased with decreasing personal annual UV dose from 1960, when it was almost insignificant, to 2000. UV and other DNA-damaging agents can activate viruses, and UV-induced cytokines can hide HPV from immune surveillance, which may explain why CMM also occurs in anatomical locations where the sun does not shine. Thus, we propose the 2 major risk factors for getting CMM are intermittent UV exposures that result in low cutaneous levels of vitamin D3 and possibly viral infection
