    A common suggestion for measuring the Newtonian gravitational constant G in a near-earth orbiting laboratory is simply to put two balls in orbit around each other and observe the resulting motion, thereby determining G. However, the radial variation with distance of the gravitational field of the earth is so large that tidal forces on the balls in near-earth orbit can be several times greater than the gravitational attraction between the two masses, leading some writers to assume that two objects will not stably orbit about each other and that this method of measuring G in low-earth is impossible, or at least impractical. Certain orbits were identified which are stable (at least over many periods of the spacecraft about the earth). In this case, the objects experience their gravitational interaction for a long time, and it becomes reasonable to consider such orbits as candidates for measurements of G

    A commonly suggested method for determining the Newtonian constant of universal gravitation (G) is to observe the motion of two bodies of known mass moving about each other in an orbiting laboratory. In low Earth orbit (LEO), bodies constructed of even the densest material available experience a gravitational attraction that is several times smaller than the 'tidal' forces (due to their proximity to the Earth), which tend to pull them apart. While the tidal forces do not preclude stable orbits of the two objects about each other, they and the Coriolis force (in the rotating laboratory) dominate the motion, and the gravitational attraction of the two bodies may be considered a weak (but significant) contribution to the motion. As a result, compared to an experiment that would be performed in a laboratory far from the Earth, greater accuracy of measuring the motion of the two bodies may be required for a given accuracy in the determination of G. We find that the accuracy with which positions must be determined is not much different in an experiment in LEO than in one performed far from the Earth, but that rotational periods must be determined more accurately. Using a curvature matrix analysis, we also find that a value of G may be extracted (with some loss in accuracy, but probably some practical gain) from an analysis of the time dependence of the distance between the bodies rather than of a full specification (distance and direction) of their relative positions. A measurement of the gravitational constant to one part in 10(exp 4) continues to be thinkable, but one part in 10(exp 5) will be very difficult

    Psychological consequences of childhood obesity: psychiatric comorbidity and prevention

    Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century with far-reaching and enduring adverse consequences for health outcomes. Over 42 million children <5 years worldwide are estimated to be overweight (OW) or obese (OB), and if current trends continue, then an estimated 70 million children will be OW or OB by 2025. The purpose of this review was to focus on psychiatric, psychological, and psychosocial consequences of childhood obesity (OBy) to include a broad range of international studies. The aim was to establish what has recently changed in relation to the common psychological consequences associated with childhood OBy. A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for articles presenting information on the identification or prevention of psychiatric morbidity in childhood obesity. Relevant data were extracted and narratively reviewed. Findings established childhood OW/OBy was negatively associated with psychological comorbidities, such as depression, poorer perceived lower scores on health-related quality of life, emotional and behavioral disorders, and self-esteem during childhood. Evidence related to the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and OBy remains unconvincing because of various findings from studies. OW children were more likely to experience multiple associated psychosocial problems than their healthy-weight peers, which may be adversely influenced by OBy stigma, teasing, and bullying. OBy stigma, teasing, and bullying are pervasive and can have serious consequences for emotional and physical health and performance. It remains unclear as to whether psychiatric disorders and psychological problems are a cause or a consequence of childhood obesity or whether common factors promote both obesity and psychiatric disturbances in susceptible children and adolescents. A cohesive and strategic approach to tackle this current obesity epidemic is necessary to combat this increasing trend which is compromising the health and well-being of the young generation and seriously impinging on resources and economic costs

    Limitations for change detection in multiple Gabor targets

    We investigate the limitations on the ability to detect when a target has changed, using Gabor targets as simple quantifiable stimuli. Using a partial report technique to equalise response variables, we show that the log of the Weber fraction for detecting a spatial frequency change is proportional to the log of the number of targets, with a set-size effect that is greater than that reported for visual search. This is not a simple perceptual limitation, because pre-cueing a single target out of four restores performance to the level found when only one target is present. It is argued that the primary limitation on performance is the division of attention across multiple targets, rather than decay within visual memory. However in a simplified change detection experiment without cueing, where only one target of the set changed, not only was the set size effect still larger, but it was greater at 2000 msec ISI than at 250 msec ISI, indicating a possible memory component. The steepness of the set size effects obtained suggests that even moderate complexity of a stimulus in terms of number of component objects can overload attentional processes, suggesting a possible low-level mechanism for change blindness

The vehicle for this exploration is the design of a dramatic theater in Boston. This thesis proposes as an idea for theater that the dramatic experience is simultaneously an extension of life and an idealized world. From this metaphor grow two parallel suppositions: that theater represents an image of our culture as it exists; and that it concurrently explores alternate images of culture and reality. This position suggests a model of theater as simultaneously an integral part of the city and as an isolated microcosm; these two extremes overlap and coexist in the lobby, offering a range of possible interpretations of its role. Architectural forms are sought that express this metaphorical order, with its inherent dialectic, and also respond to other orders, creating a degree of ambiguity in interpretation.     Female teat size is a reliable indicator of annual breeding success in European badgers: Genetic validation

    Assessing which females have bred successfully is a central requirement in many ecological field studies, providing an estimate of the effective female population size. Researchers have applied teat measurements previously to assess whether females, in a variety of mammalian species, have bred; however, this technique has not been validated genetically. Furthermore, several analytical techniques are available to classify individuals, but their misclassification rates have not been compared. We used 22 microsatellite loci to assign maternity, with 95% confidence, within a high-density population of European badgers Meles meles, as plural and subterranean breeding means that maternity cannot be inferred from behavioural observations. The teat lengths and diameters of 136 females, measured May–July 1994–2005, from social groups in which all offspring were assigned a mother, were reliable indicators of recent breeding success. A Generalised Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) classified both breeding and non-breeding females with lower error rates than discriminant analyses and crude teat-size criteria. The GLMM model logit probability = −20 + 1.8 month + 1.6 mean teat length + 1.0 mean teat diameter can be applied quickly in the field to assess the probability with which a female badger should be assigned maternity. This is a low-cost measure which, after validation, could be used in other badger or mammalian populations to assess the breeding success of females. This may be a particularly useful welfare tool for veterinary practitioners, especially during badger culls

    Seasonal and spatial variations in the ocean-coupled ambient wavefield of the Ross Ice Shelf

Journal of Glaciology, 65(254), (2019): 912-925, doi:10.1017/jog.2019.64.The Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) is host to a broadband, multimode seismic wavefield that is excited in response to atmospheric, oceanic and solid Earth source processes. A 34-station broadband seismographic network installed on the RIS from late 2014 through early 2017 produced continuous vibrational observations of Earth's largest ice shelf at both floating and grounded locations. We characterize temporal and spatial variations in broadband ambient wavefield power, with a focus on period bands associated with primary (10–20 s) and secondary (5–10 s) microseism signals, and an oceanic source process near the ice front (0.4–4.0 s). Horizontal component signals on floating stations overwhelmingly reflect oceanic excitations year-round due to near-complete isolation from solid Earth shear waves. The spectrum at all periods is shown to be strongly modulated by the concentration of sea ice near the ice shelf front. Contiguous and extensive sea ice damps ocean wave coupling sufficiently so that wintertime background levels can approach or surpass those of land-sited stations in Antarctica.This research was supported by NSF grants PLR-1142518, 1141916, 1142126, 1246151 and 1246416.     Physician Referral Rather than Proxy Referral to an Organ Procurement Organization Following Asystolic Death Results in Higher Tissue Donation Rates

    Timely referral of patients following asystolic death to an organ procurement organization (OPO) may increase tissue donation rates. Notification of the OPO following asystolic death was formerly the responsibility of the admitting office. We hypothesized that changing the responsibility from the admitting department to the declaring physician for calling the OPO would increase timely referral and tissue donation rates. In 2006, the instructions accompanying the working copy of the death certificate were altered to require the patient’s physician to call the OPO within one hou r of death. From 10/2006 to 2/2007 intensive communication and in-servicing was carried out in all intensive care units. Timely referral and donation rates were tabulated before and after the intervention. Data were modeled longitudinally using Generalized Linear Mixed Models (SAS). There timely referral rates rose 2.1 fold on campus 1 (p\u3c0.05) and 1.3 fold on campus 2 (p= NS). The tissue donation rate rose significantly (2.6 fold, p\u3c0.05). In 2005, the donation rate was 21 cases/year and rose to 56 cases/year by 2008 (p\u3c0.05). The rate has held steady since that time (2009-2012). Physician referral rather than referral by other parties following asystolic death results in higher tissue donation rates
