    Wallum on the Nabiac Pleistocene barriers, lower North Coast of New South Wales

    Wallum is widespread on coastal dunefields, beach ridge plains and associated sandy flats in northern NSW and southern Queensland. These sand masses contain large aquifers, and the wallum ecosystem is considered to be generally groundwater-dependent. This study describes the floristic composition and environmental relations of wallum on a Pleistocene barrier system at Nabiac (32˚ 09’S 152˚ 26’E), on the lower North Coast of NSW. Despite their minimal elevation and degraded relief, the Nabiac barriers maintain floristic patterns related to topography and hence groundwater relations. Comparative analyses identified the Nabiac wallum as representative of the ecosystem throughout large parts of its range in eastern Australia. The Nabiac wallum and nearby estuarine and alluvial vegetation supports species and communities of conservation significance. A borefield is proposed for development on the Nabiac barriers, thereby providing a valuable opportunity for research into mechanisms of groundwater utilisation by the wallum ecosystem

    Wetland biodiversity in coastal New South Wales: the Wallis Lake catchment as a case study

    The floristic composition and environmental relations of wetland vegetation in the Wallis Lake catchment (32˚ 09’S; 152˚ 20’E), area 1292 km2, on the lower North Coast of NSW are described. The catchment supports wetlands listed as Endangered Ecological Communities (NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995) and plant species of high conservation value. A methodology of air photo interpretation, site-based sampling (114 quadrats) and landscape differentiation was developed. A total of 393 vascular plant taxa were recorded (including 10% exotics). Wetland vegetation formations and subformations including mangrove forest, swamp sclerophyll forest, wet heathland, chenopod shrubland, tussock grassland, sedgeland and rushland are described using numerical classification. 31 plant species of national or regional conservation significance are identified. Four Endangered Ecological Communities are discussed – Coastal Saltmarsh, Swamp Oak Floodplain Forest, Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains, and Freshwater Wetlands on Coastal Floodplains. A key recommendation is the completion of reliable wetland vegetation and soil landscape mapping for all land tenures in the catchment – to assess wetland condition and conservation significance, and representation in formal conservation reserves, thereby directing future priorities for the protection of wetland biodiversity on both public and private lands. The methodology developed can be applied to the survey and conservation of wetland biodiversity in other parts of coastal NSW

    Statistical Mechanics of Time Independent Non-Dissipative Nonequilibrium States

    We examine the question of whether the formal expressions of equilibrium statistical mechanics can be applied to time independent non-dissipative systems that are not in true thermodynamic equilibrium and are nonergodic. By assuming the phase space may be divided into time independent, locally ergodic domains, we argue that within such domains the relative probabilities of microstates are given by the standard Boltzmann weights. In contrast to previous energy landscape treatments, that have been developed specifically for the glass transition, we do not impose an a priori knowledge of the inter-domain population distribution. Assuming that these domains are robust with respect to small changes in thermodynamic state variables we derive a variety of fluctuation formulae for these systems. We verify our theoretical results using molecular dynamics simulations on a model glass forming system. Non-equilibrium Transient Fluctuation Relations are derived for the fluctuations resulting from a sudden finite change to the system's temperature or pressure and these are shown to be consistent with the simulation results. The necessary and sufficient conditions for these relations to be valid are that the domains are internally populated by Boltzmann statistics and that the domains are robust. The Transient Fluctuation Relations thus provide an independent quantitative justification for the assumptions used in our statistical mechanical treatment of these systems.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, minor amendment

    The rheology of solid glass

    As the glass transition is approached from the high temperature side, viewed as a liquid, the properties of the ever more viscous supercooled liquid are continuous functions of temperature and pressure. The point at which we decide to classify the fluid as a solid is therefore subjective. This subjective decision does, however, have discontinuous consequences for how we determine the rheological properties of the glass. We apply the recently discovered relaxation theorem to the time independent, nondissipative, nonergodic glassy state to derive an expression for the phase space distribution of an ensemble of glass samples. This distribution is then used to construct a time dependent linear response theory for aged glassysolids. The theory is verified using molecular dynamics simulations of oscillatory shear for a realistic model glass former with excellent agreement being obtained between the response theory calculations and direct nonequilibrium molecular dynamics calculations. Our numerical results confirm that unlike all the fluid states, including supercooled liquids, a solidglass (in common with crystalline states) has a nonzero value for the zero frequency shear modulus. Of all the states of matter, a supercooled fluid approaching the glass transition has the highest value for the limiting zero frequency shear viscosity. Finally, solidglasses like dilute gases and crystals have a positive temperature coefficient for the shear viscosity whereas supercooled and normal liquids have a negative temperature coefficient.We thank the National Computational Infrastructure NCI for computational facilities and the Australian Research Council ARC for funding

    Regolith-atmosphere exchange of water in Mars' recent past

    We investigate the exchange of water vapour between the regolith and atmosphere of Mars, and how it varies with different orbital parameters, atmospheric dust contents and surface water ice reservoirs. This is achieved through the coupling of a global circulation model (GCM) and a regolith diffusion model. GCM simulations are performed for hundreds of Mars years, with additional one-dimensional simulations performed for 50 kyr. At obliquities ε = 15° and 30°, the thermal inertia and albedo of the regolith have more control on the subsurface water distribution than changes to the eccentricity or solar longitude of perihelion. At ε = 45°, atmospheric water vapour abundances become much larger, allowing stable subsurface ice to form in the tropics and mid-latitudes. The circulation of the atmosphere is important in producing the subsurface water distribution, with increased water content in various locations due to vapour transport by topographically-steered flows and stationary waves. As these circulation patterns are due to topographic features, it is likely the same regions will also experience locally large amounts of subsurface water at different epochs. The dustiness of the atmosphere plays an important role in the distribution of subsurface water, with a dusty atmosphere resulting in a wetter water cycle and increased stability of subsurface ice deposits

    Subterranean glacial spillways: an example from the karst of South Wales, UK

    Many karst areas in the UK have been glaciated one or more times during the last 0.5 Ma, yet there are few documented examples of caves in these regions being affected by glacial processes other than erosion. The karst of South Wales is one area where sub or pro-glacial modification of pre-existing caves is thought to occur. Evidence from the Ogof Draenen cave system suggests that caves can sometimes act as subterranean glacial ‘underspill’ channels for melt-water. This cave, one of the longest in Britain with a surveyed length of over 70 km, underlies the interfluve between two glaciated valleys. Sediment fills and speleo-morphological observations indicate that melt-water from a high level glacier in the Afon Lwyd valley (>340m asl) filled part of the cave and over-spilled into the neighbouring Usk valley, temporarily reversing non-glacial groundwater flow directions in the cave. It is suggested that this may have occurred during a Middle Pleistocene glaciation
