Der Rotkleeanbau in Deutschland könnte künftig durch eine Pilzkrankheit, der Anthracnose, erschwert werden. Um den Anbau weiterhin zu sichern, wurden die in Deutschland zugelassenen Rotkleesorten hinsichtlich ihrer Resistenz gegen die Krankheit in einer Prüfung im Gewächshaus evaluiert. Weiterhin wurde untersucht, ob man mit dem Verfahren der rekurrenten Selektion eine Anhebung des Resistenzniveaus bestehender Populationen erreichen kann. Zudem wurden molekulare Markeranalysen durchgeführt, die die Basis künftiger Züchtung durch markergestützte Selektion (MAS) bilden können

Horn-like space-coiling metamaterials toward simultaneous phase and amplitude modulation

Acoustic metasurfaces represent a family of planar wavefront-shaping devices garnering increasing attention due to their capacity for novel acoustic wave manipulation. By precisely tailoring the geometry of these engineered surfaces, the effective refractive index may be modulated and, consequently, acoustic phase delays tuned. Despite the successful demonstration of phase engineering using metasurfaces, amplitude modulation remains overlooked. Herein, we present a class of metasurfaces featuring a horn-like space-coiling structure, enabling acoustic control with simultaneous phase and amplitude modulation. The functionality of this class of metasurfaces, featuring a gradient in channel spacing, has been investigated theoretically and numerically and an equivalent model simplifying the structural behavior is presented. A metasurface featuring this geometry has been designed and its functionality in modifying acoustic radiation patterns experimentally validated. This class of acoustic metasurface provides an efficient design methodology enabling complete acoustic wave manipulation, which may find utility in applications including biomedical imaging, acoustic communication, and non-destructive testing.We thank Boston University Materials Innovation Grant and Dean's Catalyst Award. Cardiovascular outcome trials in obesity: A review.

Obesity is a global epidemic associated with over 200 health complications and a significant risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), partly by increasing classical risk factors such as lipid and glucose levels and blood pressure. Weight loss through lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy and/or bariatric surgery improves CV risk factors. Cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of anti-obesity medications aim to evaluate the CV safety and benefits of pharmacotherapy. Many CVOTs in obesity have either failed to demonstrate a CV benefit or have been terminated prematurely because of safety issues, prompting regulatory agencies to define new requirements (based on those for CVOTs in type 2 diabetes [T2D]). CVOTs of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in T2D have demonstrated that some GLP-1RAs reduce CV risk and may help inform future CVOTs in obesity, given the approval of liraglutide 3.0 mg for obesity. In this review, the evidence for the link between obesity and CVD is considered in the context of studies showing that weight loss improves markers of CV risk and risk of adverse CV events. The review also examines the CVOTs in obesity that have been conducted to date and those under way, such as the SELECT trial with subcutaneous semaglutide of 2.4 mg

Coming Clean and Green: A Geospatial Mapping Tool for Visualizing Industrial Environmental Performance

The mapping of environmental data is rapidly expanding as advocates and scholars offer various platforms to display and analyze geographic environmental information.This working paper describes an online web map that displays national data from the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), Environmental Systems Research Institute’s (ESRI) ArcGIS Server platform, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Risk Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI), and methodologies from Kraft, Stephan, and Abel (2011) to spatially display the environmental performance of more than 17,000 manufacturing facilities

Verbesserung der Resistenz von Rotklee gegen Colletotrichum trifolii durch rekurrente Selektion

Southern Anthracnose, a fungal disease of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) caused by Colletotrichum trifolii, seems to gain more importance in agriculture in Germany. This investigation should examine whether there is a simple possibility to increase the resistance in cultivars or breeding material through recurrent selection. Six red clover cultivars listed in Germany were used for this study. The survival rate after one and two cycles of recurrent selection was increased by 17 and 26 percentage points compared to the parental population. The advance in resistance generally was higher in populations with lower original resistance

Resistenz der in Deutschland zugelassenen Rotkleesorten gegen den Erreger des Südlichen Stängelbrenners (Colletotrichum trifolii)

Die Pilzkrankheit Anthracnose an Rotklee scheint in Deutschland an Bedeutung zu gewinnen. Zur Identifizierung widerstandsfähiger Rotkleesorten wurde ein Resistenztest im Gewächshaus durchgeführt. Auch andere Futterleguminosen wurden erstmals in diesen Test integriert. Die getesteten Rotkleesorten differenzieren deutlich hinsichtlich ihrer Anfälligkeit. Die Überlebensrate der Pflanzen schwankte zwischen 29 und 81 %. Unter den alternativen Futterpflanzenarten zeigten sich die getesteten Sorten von Weißklee, Hornklee und Esparsette als resistent, wohingegen die geprüfte Gelbkleesorte anfällig war. Bei Luzerne und Inkarnatklee traten Sortenunterschiede auf. Diese Ergebnisse wurden im Rahmen des vom BÖLN finanzierten Forschungsvorhabens FKZ 06OE161 ermittelt

Steigerung der Anthracnoseresistenz von Rotklee durch rekurrente Selektion

Einleitung und Problemstellung Anthracnose (Colletotrichum trifolii) hat in den letzten Jahren als Krankheit an Rotklee an Bedeutung gewonnen. Diese Pilzkrankheit kann zu einem erheblichen Verlust von Rotkleepflanzen in Rein- und Mischbeständen mit Gräsern führen. Falls es zu einem vermehrten Auftreten dieser Krankheit auf landwirtschaftlich genutzten Flächen kommt, wäre der Einsatz von Sorten mit einer hohen Resistenz ein vielversprechender Ansatz, um die Grundfutterversorgung, aber auch die Stickstoffversorgung v.a. ökologisch wirtschaftender, viehloser Betriebe abzusichern. Durch die Züchtung von resistenten Sorten spielt die Krankheit bei Rotklee in den USA nur noch eine untergeordnete Rolle. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung sollte geprüft werden, ob die Methode der rekurrenten Selektion für eine Anhebung des Resistenzniveaus von Rotkleepopulationen genutzt werden kann

Optimal non-circular fiber geometries for image scrambling in high-resolution spectrographs

Optical fibers are a key component for high-resolution spectrographs to attain high precision in radial velocity measurements. We present a custom fiber with a novel core geometry - a 'D'-shape. From a theoretical standpoint, such a fiber should provide superior scrambling and modal noise mitigation, since unlike the commonly used circular and polygonal fiber cross sections, it shows chaotic scrambling. We report on the fabrication process of a test fiber and compare the optical properties, scrambling performance, and modal noise behavior of the D-fiber with those of common polygonal fibers.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to SPIE Astronomical Telescopes & Instrumentation 2016 (9912-192
