Generic homonyms in the Colydiinae (Coleoptera: Zopheridae)
New replacement names are proposed: Megapnosaurus Ivie, Slipinski and Wegrzynowicz NEW REPLACEMENT NAME for Syntarsus Raath 1969 (Ceratosauria: Coelophysidae), not Syntarsus Fairmaire 1869 (Coleoptera: Zopheridae: Colydiinae); and Stephaniolus Ivie, Slipinski and Wegrzynowicz NEW REPLACEMENT NAME for Pseudotaphrus Stephan 1989 (Coleoptera: Zopheridae: Colydiinae) not Pseudotaphrus Cossmann 1888 (Mollusca: Rissoiidae). These result in the new combinations Megapnosaurus
rhodesiensis (Raath 1961) NEW COMBINATION, Megapnosaurus kayentalwtae (Rowe 1989) NEW COMBINATION and Stephanioh£s longus (Stephan 1989) NEW COMBINATION
Thermal radiation of conducting nanoparticles
The thermal radiation of small conducting particles was investigated in the
region where the Stephan-Boltzmann law is not valid and strongly overestimates
radiation losses. The new criterion for the particle size, at which black body
radiation law fails, was formulated. The approach is based on the magnetic
particle polarization, which is valid until very small sizes (cluster size)
where due to drop of particle conductivity the electric polarization prevails
over the magnetic one. It was also shown that the radiation power of clusters,
estimated on the basis of the experimental data, is lower than that given by
the Stephan-Boltzmann law.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
New records and synonyms in the Colydiinae and Pycnomerini (Coleoptera: Zopheridae)
New synonyms are proposed for: Pethelispa arizonica Dajoz 1992 = Pycnomerus arizonicus Stephan 1989 NEW SYNONYMY; Microprius cubanus Slipinski 1985 = Eudesmula california Dajoz 1992 = Microprius rufulus (Motschulsky 1863) NEW SYNONYMIES; andAulonium chilense Dajoz 1980=Aulonium parallelopedium (Say 1826) NEW SYNONYMY. Colobicus parilis Pascoe is recorded from Louisiana, a new distributional record for the New World
Spectroscopy of Comet P/Encke in 1980 - 1981
Digital spectroscopic scans of P/Comets Encke, Stephan-Oterma, and Gunn were obtained with a sky-subtraction scanner system. Quantiative fluxes for the cometary emission bands of CN, C3, C2, NH2, and the 'D OI red auroral line are presented for P/Encke. The most straight-forward and model-independent line flux to interpret is the lambda lambda 6300, 6364 forbidden oxygen doublet. After an NH2 blending correction, the oxygen production rate may be directly measured from the Lick small-aperture fluxes. The oxygen production rates increased rapidly with decreasing heliocentric distance for both P/Encke and P/Stephan-Oterma. A rough power-law exponent in r with n = approximately -2.5 describes the change in oxygen production for P/Encke. Compared to the water production rates inferred from IUE satellite spectra showing the lambda 3080 OH band, these oxygen production rates are consistently lower by a factor of 11. This implies a common origin for the two species; H2O is the likely sole OI ID parent
Sally McCarty and Sheila Stephan in a Joint Senior Recital
This is the program for the joint senior recital of organist Sally McCarty and flutist Sheila Stephan. Rick Vasey assisted McCarty; Cannon Lamont assisted Stephan. The recital took place in Mitchell Hall Auditorium on November 13, 1973
Science and Religion: Stepping Toward the Light at the Mouth of the Cave
In analyzing the dialogue between science and religion, the author finds that it is hampered
by three semantic problems. The first denies, or at least undervalues, the two modes of
knowing most apropos to religion: the emotional and the intuitive/mystical modes. Secondly, the uncritical use of language causes considerable confusion. The third problem
limits discussion to what Stephan Schwartz has called the \"Grand Material Paradigm.\" As
the conclusion of the essay, a precis of an alternate cosmology is presented
