LAKE 2.0: A model for temperature, methane, carbon dioxide and oxygen dynamics in lakes

    Get PDF
A one-dimensional (1-D) model for an enclosed basin (lake) is presented, which reproduces temperature, horizontal velocities, oxygen, carbon dioxide and methane in the basin. All prognostic variables are treated in a unified manner via a generic 1-D transport equation for horizontally averaged property. A water body interacts with underlying sediments. These sediments are represented by a set of vertical columns with heat, moisture and CH4 transport inside. The model is validated vs. a comprehensive observational data set gathered at Kuivajarvi Lake (southern Finland), demonstrating a fair agreement. The value of a key calibration constant, regulating the magnitude of methane production in sediments, corresponded well to that obtained from another two lakes. We demonstrated via surface seiche parameterization that the near-bottom turbulence induced by surface seiches is likely to significantly affect CH4 accumulation there. Furthermore, our results suggest that a gas transfer through thermocline under intense internal seiche motions is a bottleneck in quantifying greenhouse gas dynamics in dimictic lakes, which calls for further research.Peer reviewe

Anticipatory Resource of Temporary Regulation of Sensorimotor Action

The aim of the study is to determine the composition and functional significance of anticipatory resources in the process of temporal regulation of sensorimotor action.Materials and methods. The subjects were male (35 people) and female (31 people) students. The tasks of a simple sensory response, a choice reaction (three alternatives), and a “double choice” were implemented in a computer version of the experiment. In the “double choice” task, the stimulation variation was first provided (possible stimuli: one or three), and then a stimulus for a fast motor response was presented after some time, the orientation time (independent variable). Results. The participants’ initial reaction to the option with three alternative stimuli in the “double choice” task was negative. The time of the motor response falls linearly as the orientation time increases in both the male and female groups for the variant with one possible stimulus and the frequency of anticipatory effects and premature actions increases in a quadratic pattern. It must be noted that with enough orientation time, determining the expected duration of the sensorimotor action is quite straightforward. It was demonstrated that, in the presence of a margin of orientation time, operational estimates and revisions of the time required to accomplish an action dramatically improve the likelihood of anticipatory effects. Conclusions. Actualization of the anticipatory resource (which includes temporary memory standards, the ability to accurately determine and correlate the durations of processes and time intervals, time estimation skills, and individual characteristics that influence decision making) ensures the determination of the total duration of a sensorimotor action, prompt correction of its implementation, and a significant reduction in the time it takes to respond to a motor stimulus.</p

UCRAID (Ukrainian Citizen and refugee electronic support in Respiratory diseases, Allergy, Immunology and Dermatology) action plan.

Eight million Ukrainians have taken refuge in the European Union. Many have asthma and/or allergic rhinitis and/or urticaria, and around 100,000 may have a severe disease. Cultural and language barriers are a major obstacle to appropriate management. Two widely available mHealth apps, MASK-air® (Mobile Airways Sentinel NetworK) for the management of rhinitis and asthma and CRUSE® (Chronic Urticaria Self Evaluation) for patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria, were updated to include Ukrainian versions that make the documented information available to treating physicians in their own language. The Ukrainian patients fill in the questionnaires and daily symptom-medication scores for asthma, rhinitis (MASK-air) or urticaria (CRUSE) in Ukrainian. Then, following the GDPR, patients grant their physician access to the app by scanning a QR code displayed on the physician's computer enabling the physician to read the app contents in his/her own language. This service is available freely. It takes less than a minute to show patient data to the physician in the physician's web browser. UCRAID-developed by ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) and UCARE (Urticaria Centers of Reference and Excellence)-is under the auspices of the Ukraine Ministry of Health as well as European (European Academy of Allergy and Clinical immunology, EAACI, European Respiratory Society, ERS, European Society of Dermatologic Research, ESDR) and national societies

The prediction of urinary calculi fragmentation duration under the holmium laser pulses

    No full text
The results of settlement-experimental definition (prediction) of urinary stones fragmentation duration by the holmium laser impulses with the wavelength of 2.1 microns and energy from 0.8 to 1.6 J are presented in the paper. The obtained analytical expressions allow to estimate the duration of urinary stone complete fraction on the basis of its volume and radiological density as well as on its location, comprising the auxiliary manipulations time, and to predict lithotripsy operation duration regarding this data

Analysis of Physicochemical Natures of Modern Artifacts in MRI

    No full text
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is very useful in the medical sector as it uses radio waves and robust magnetic fields to produce images of the inside of the human body. MRIs are so helpful in pathologies. However, artifacts in MRI occur due to the complex nature of MRI. Artifacts in MRI may reduce the examination quality and may also be confused with pathology. Failing to identify artifacts in MRI can bring troubles. Hence, it’s very important to reduce or avoid artifacts in MRI. The major reasons behind artifacts in MRI are improper action of the MRI scanner, magnetic susceptibility, motion, chemical shifts, variation in signal intensity, etc. Due to MRI artifacts, patients can suffer from serious problems. Therefore, we have analyzed the physicochemical natures of artifacts in MRI. The research has made attempts to identify various types of artifacts in MRI and find out the causes of these artifacts. There have been samples of various types of artifacts based on which the analyses have been done. Based on these identifications of artifacts, there have also been discussions and analyses on how to avoid artifacts in MRI

Legal grounds for limitation of human rights and fundamental freedoms under the conditions of martial state

The article examines the legal institution of the restriction of human rights as a necessary and unconditional tool for the functioning of a democratic society. The article deals with the issue of the restriction of human rights under martial law. It was found that the restrictions on rights and freedoms during martial law, as a rule, do not apply to the basic rights of citizens; are limited in scope and time of effect, are applied only on the basis of relevant normative legal acts. It has been studied that martial law means the possibility of legal restriction of the rights and freedoms of citizens and a temporary deviation from the provisions of the Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the Constitution of Ukrain
