    Performance limitations of subband adaptive filters

    In this paper, we evaluate the performance limitations of subband adaptive filters in terms of achievable final error terms. The limiting factors are the aliasing level in the subbands, which poses a distortion and thus presents a lower bound for the minimum mean squared error in each subband, and the distortion function of the overall filter bank, which in a system identification setup restricts the accuracy of the equivalent fullband model. Using a generalized DFT modulated filter bank for the subband decomposition, both errors can be stated in terms of the underlying prototype filter. If a source model for coloured input signals is available, it is also possible to calculate the power spectral densities in both subbands and reconstructed fullband. D.) University of Missouri-Columbia 2006.The purpose of this study was to provide data to identify Missouri Public School Building variables that impact adequate yearly progress (AYP) status. Data were collected from Missouri DESE for the 2004-2005 school year. The study design used descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and discriminate analysis (DA) to provide school personnel with information about factors that discriminate between school buildings that made AYP and those that did not. School building variables including school size, class size, student teacher ratio, attendance rate, dropout rate, and discipline reports were found to make significant differences in both the ANOVA and the DA. Student variables including free/reduced lunch, white, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Indian and level not determined in both CA and math were not found to discriminate between schools that made AYP and those that did not. Interestingly, all of the student variables except Hispanic were found to be significantly different using the ANOVA. Results of this study show that school building variables do make a difference in student achievement and that school personnel need to work with all students to improve achievement in this era of accountability for public schools. School districts have control over school building variables and need to find ways to either make schools smaller or seem smaller, make classes smaller, increase attendance, lower the dropout rate and lower the number of discipline reports.Includes bibliographical reference

    Nanoplasmonics beyond Ohm's law

    In tiny metallic nanostructures, quantum confinement and nonlocal response change the collective plasmonic behavior with important consequences for e.g. field-enhancement and extinction cross sections. We report on our most recent developments of a real-space formulation of an equation-of-motion that goes beyond the common local-response approximation and use of Ohm's law as the central constitutive equation. The electron gas is treated within a semi-classical hydrodynamic model with the emergence of a new intrinsic length scale.     Ultra-precise measurement of optical frequency ratios

    We developed a novel technique for frequency measurement and synthesis, based on the operation of a femtosecond comb generator as transfer oscillator. The technique can be used to measure frequency ratios of any optical signals throughout the visible and near-infrared part of the spectrum. Relative uncertainties of 10−1810^{-18} for averaging times of 100 s are possible. Using a Nd:YAG laser in combination with a nonlinear crystal we measured the frequency ratio of the second harmonic νSH\nu_{SH} at 532 nm to the fundamental ν0\nu_0 at 1064 nm, νSH/ν0=2.000000000000000001×(1±7×10−19)\nu_{SH}/\nu_0 = 2.000 000 000 000 000 001 \times (1 \pm 7 \times 10^{-19}).Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Apollo to Artemis: Mining 50-Year Old Records to Inform Future Human Lunar Landing Systems

    Under the Artemis lunar exploration program, NASA is committed to landing American astronauts on the moon by 2024. While NASAs new Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule will carry astronauts from Earth to the Gateway, the human lunar landing system has not yet been fully defined. As in the Apollo program, there are concerns for vehicle weight and internal volume such that seats may not be desirable, and standing during lunar descent and ascent may be a preferred engineering solution. With such a design, astronauts will experience +GZ (head-to-foot) accelerations during capsule accelerations, and it is unclear whether spaceflight deconditioned astronauts can tolerate these. Apollo astronauts stood during lunar descent and ascent, and the data contained in the early program records for those missions represent a unique resource that may provide insights to the cardiovascular stress associated with this human landing system design

    Spontaneous Vortex Lattices in Quasi 2D Dipolar Spinor Condensates

    Motivated by recent experiments\cite{BA}\cite{BB}, we study quasi 2D ferromagnetic condensates with various aspect ratios. We find that in zero magnetic field, dipolar energy generates a local energy minimum with all the spins lie in the 2D plane forming a row of {\em circular} spin textures with {\em alternating} orientation, corresponding to a packing of vortices of {\em identical} vorticity in different spin components. In a large magnetic field, the system can fall into a long lived dynamical state consisting of an array of elliptic and hyperbolic Mermin-Ho spin textures, while the true equilibrium is an uniaxial spin density wave with a single wave-vector along the magnetic field, and a wavelength similar to the characteristic length of the long lived vortex array state.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
