Scanner observations of selected cool stars
Photoelectric spectral scans at 30-A resolution of 9 dwarfs, 10 giants and 6 supergiants with spectral types GO to M5 were presented. All stars were observed every 4 A from wavelength 3300 to wavelength 7000. Absorption features at this resolution coincide with: strong atomic lines of Fe 1,11, Ca 1,11, Mg 1, and Na 1; vibrational bands of the electronic transitions of TiO, MgH, CaH, SiH, AlH, Cn, Ch, C2, OH, and NH. The dependence of the wavelength 3740 Fe 1 blend and the wavelength 3440 depression on temperature is discussed

Using rewards and penalties to obtain desired subject performance
Operant conditioning procedures, specifically the use of negative reinforcement, in achieving stable learning behavior is described. The critical tracking test (CTT) a method of detecting human operator impairment was tested. A pass level is set for each subject, based on that subject's asymptotic skill level while sober. It is critical that complete training take place before the individualized pass level is set in order that the impairment can be detected. The results provide a more general basis for the application of reward/penalty structures in manual control research
The effects of alcohol on driver performance in a decision making situation
The results are reviewed of driving simulator and in-vehicle field test experiments of alcohol effects on driver risk taking. The objective was to investigate changes in risk taking under alcoholic intoxication and relate these changes to effects on traffic safety. The experiments involved complex 15 minute driving scenarios requiring decision making and steering and speed control throughout a series of typical driving situations. Monetary rewards and penalties were employed to simulate the real-world motivations inherent in driving. A full placebo experimental design was employed, and measures related to traffic safety, driver/vehicle performance and driver behavior were obtained. Alcohol impairment was found to increase the rate of accidents and speeding tickets. Behavioral measures showed these traffic safety effects to be due to impaired psychomotor performance and perceptual distortions. Subjective estimates of risk failed to show any change in the driver's willingness to take risks when intoxicated
Realistic Magnetohydrodynamical Simulation of Solar Local Supergranulation
Three-dimensional numerical simulations of solar surface magnetoconvection
using realistic model physics are conducted. The thermal structure of
convective motions into the upper radiative layers of the photosphere, the main
scales of convective cells and the penetration depths of convection are
investigated. We take part of the solar photosphere with size of 60x60 Mm in
horizontal direction and by depth 20 Mm from level of the visible solar
surface. We use a realistic initial model of the Sun and apply equation of
state and opacities of stellar matter. The equations of fully compressible
radiation magnetohydrodynamics with dynamical viscosity and gravity are solved.
We apply: 1) conservative TVD difference scheme for the magnetohydrodynamics,
2) the diffusion approximation for the radiative transfer, 3) dynamical
viscosity from subgrid scale modeling. In simulation we take uniform
two-dimesional grid in gorizontal plane and nonuniform grid in vertical
direction with number of cells 600x600x204. We use 512 processors with
distributed memory multiprocessors on supercomputer MVS-100k in the Joint

High density cluster jet target for storage ring experiments
The design and performance of a newly developed cluster jet target
installation for hadron physics experiments are presented which, for the first
time, is able to generate a hydrogen cluster jet beam with a target thickness
of above at a distance of two metres behind the
cluster jet nozzle. The properties of the cluster beam and of individual
clusters themselves are studied at this installation. Special emphasis is
placed on measurements of the target beam density as a function of the relevant
parameters as well as on the cluster beam profiles. By means of a
time-of-flight setup, measurements of the velocity of single clusters and
velocity distributions were possible. The complete installation, which meets
the requirements of future internal fixed target experiments at storage rings,
and the results of the systematic studies on hydrogen cluster jets are

Spin Susceptibility of a 2D Electron System in GaAs towards the Weak Interaction Region
We determine the spin susceptibility in the weak interaction regime of
a tunable, high quality, two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/AlGaAs
heterostructure. The band structure effects, modifying mass and g-factor, are
carefully taken into accounts since they become appreciable for the large
electron densities of the weak interaction regime. When properly normalized,
decreases monotonically from 3 to 1.1 with increasing density over our
experimental range from 0.1 to . In the high density
limit, tends correctly towards and compare well with recent

Conservative Quantum Computing
Conservation laws limit the accuracy of physical implementations of
elementary quantum logic gates. If the computational basis is represented by a
component of spin and physical implementations obey the angular momentum
conservation law, any physically realizable unitary operators with size less
than n qubits cannot implement the controlled-NOT gate within the error
probability 1/(4n^2), where the size is defined as the total number of the
computational qubits and the ancilla qubits. An analogous limit for bosonic
ancillae is also obtained to show that the lower bound of the error probability
is inversely proportional to the average number of photons. Any set of
universal gates inevitably obeys a related limitation with error probability
O(1/n^2)$. To circumvent the above or related limitations yielded by
conservation laws, it is recommended that the computational basis should be

On Zurek's derivation of the Born rule
Recently, W. H. Zurek presented a novel derivation of the Born rule based on
a mechanism termed environment-assisted invariance, or "envariance" [W. H.
Zurek, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90(2), 120404 (2003)]. We review this approach and
identify fundamental assumptions that have implicitly entered into it,

Effect of Transition Magnetic Moments on Collective Supernova Neutrino Oscillations
We study the effect of Majorana transition magnetic moments on the flavor
evolution of neutrinos and antineutrinos inside the core of Type-II supernova
explosions. We find non-trivial collective oscillation effects relating
neutrinos and antineutrinos of different flavors, even if one restricts the
discussion to Majorana transition electromagnetic moment values that are not
much larger than those expected from standard model interactions and nonzero
neutrino Majorana masses. This appears to be, to the best of our knowledge, the
only potentially observable phenomenon sensitive to such small values of
Majorana transition magnetic moments. We briefly comment on the effect of Dirac
transition magnetic moments and on the consequences of our results for future
observations of the flux of neutrinos of different flavors from a nearby
