    ON THE DYNAMICS OF COMMERCIAL FISHING AND PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION

    This paper has two main objectives. The first is to develop a dynamic model of commercial fisheries different from most existing models that assume optimizing behavior. The industry is assumed to have a well-defined index of performance. Based upon this index, the decision to invest or not is made. We do not, however, assume that the industry or firm is efficient or optimal in its operations. The second is that a new approach of fitting model dynamics to time series data is employed to simultaneously estimate the poorly known initial conditions and parameters of nonlinear fisheries dynamics. The approach is a data assimilation technique known as the variational adjoint method.     Integral points on elliptic curves and explicit valuations of division polynomials

    Assuming Lang's conjectured lower bound on the heights of non-torsion points on an elliptic curve, we show that there exists an absolute constant C such that for any elliptic curve E/Q and non-torsion point P in E(Q), there is at most one integral multiple [n]P such that n > C. The proof is a modification of a proof of Ingram giving an unconditional but not uniform bound. The new ingredient is a collection of explicit formulae for the sequence of valuations of the division polynomials. For P of non-singular reduction, such sequences are already well described in most cases, but for P of singular reduction, we are led to define a new class of sequences called elliptic troublemaker sequences, which measure the failure of the Neron local height to be quadratic. As a corollary in the spirit of a conjecture of Lang and Hall, we obtain a uniform upper bound on h(P)/h(E) for integer points having two large integral multiples.Comment: 41 pages; minor corrections and improvements to expositio

    Most research on natural language processing treats bias as an absolute concept: Based on a (probably complex) algorithmic analysis, a sentence, an article, or a text is classified as biased or not. Given the fact that for humans the question of whether a text is biased can be difficult to answer or is answered contradictory, we ask whether an "absolute bias classification" is a promising goal at all. We see the problem not in the complexity of interpreting language phenomena but in the diversity of sociocultural backgrounds of the readers, which cannot be handled uniformly: To decide whether a text has crossed the proverbial line between non-biased and biased is subjective. By asking "Is text X more [less, equally] biased than text Y?" we propose to analyze a simpler problem, which, by its construction, is rather independent of standpoints, views, or sociocultural aspects. In such a model, bias becomes a preference relation that induces a partial ordering from least biased to most biased texts without requiring a decision on where to draw the line. A prerequisite for this kind of bias model is the ability of humans to perceive relative bias differences in the first place. In our research, we selected a specific type of bias in argumentation, the stance bias, and designed a crowdsourcing study showing that differences in stance bias are perceptible when (light) support is provided through training or visual aid

    The Role of Time and Frequency in Future Systems

    Over the past twenty years, the Global Positioning System (GPS) has revolutionized the performance and the geographical availability of time and frequency discrimination, while at the same time reducing the cost to the individual user. This paper examines the question of what comes next for time and frequency dissemination. The question has two motivations: How can improved performance be achieved in the future, and how can redundant sources of time and frequency be provided to critical systems? A model is developed for time and frequency dissemination based on the time management performed in GPS. Several candidate systems for future time and frequency distribution are identified. One system - SONET telecommunications - is discussed in detail. Performance requirements and hardware implementation are presented

    Left ventricular hypertrophy and biomarkers of cardiac damage and stress in aortic stenosis

    Background Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with increased mortality risk and rehospitalization after transcatheter aortic valve replacement among those with severe aortic stenosis. Whether cardiac troponin (cTnT) and NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) risk stratify patients with aortic stenosis and without LVH is unknown. Methods and Results In a multicenter prospective registry of 923 patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement, we included 674 with core-laboratory-measured LV mass index, cTnT, and NT-proBNP. LVH was defined by sex-specific guideline cut-offs and elevated biomarker levels were based on age and sex cut-offs. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards models evaluated associations between LVH and biomarkers and all-cause death out to 5 years. Elevated cTnT and NT-proBNP were present in 82% and 86% of patients with moderate/severe LVH, respectively, as compared with 66% and 69% of patients with no/mild LVH, respectively
