    LDEF fiber-composite materials characterization

    Degradation of a number of fiber/polymer composites located on the leading and trailing surfaces of LDEF where the atomic oxygen (AO) fluences ranged from 10(exp 22) to 10(exp 4) atoms/cm(sup 2), respectively, was observed and compared. While matrices of the composites on the leading edge generally exhibited considerable degradation and erosion-induced fragmentation, this 'asking' process was confined to the near surface regions because these degraded structures acted as a 'protective blanket' for deeper-lying regions. This finding leads to the conclusion that simple surface coatings can significantly retard AO and other combinations of degrading phenomena in low-Earth orbit. Micrometeoroid and debris particle impacts were not a prominent feature on the fiber composites studied and apparently do not contribute in a significant way to their degradation or alteration in low-Earth orbit

    Using rewards and penalties to obtain desired subject performance

    Operant conditioning procedures, specifically the use of negative reinforcement, in achieving stable learning behavior is described. The critical tracking test (CTT) a method of detecting human operator impairment was tested. A pass level is set for each subject, based on that subject's asymptotic skill level while sober. It is critical that complete training take place before the individualized pass level is set in order that the impairment can be detected. The results provide a more general basis for the application of reward/penalty structures in manual control research

    Line formation in solar granulation: I. Fe line shapes, shifts and asymmetries

    Realistic ab-initio 3D, radiative-hydrodynamical convection simulations of the solar granulation have been applied to FeI and FeII line formation. In contrast to classical analyses based on hydrostatic 1D model atmospheres the procedure contains no adjustable free parameters but the treatment of the numerical viscosity in the construction of the 3D, time-dependent, inhomogeneous model atmosphere and the elemental abundance in the 3D spectral synthesis. However, the numerical viscosity is introduced purely for numerical stability purposes and is determined from standard hydrodynamical test cases with no adjustments allowed to improve the agreement with the observational constraints from the solar granulation. The non-thermal line broadening is mainly provided by the Doppler shifts arising from the convective flows in the solar photosphere and the solar oscillations. The almost perfect agreement between the predicted temporally and spatially averaged line profiles for weak Fe lines with the observed profiles and the absence of trends in derived abundances with line strengths, seem to imply that the micro- and macroturbulence concepts are obsolete in these 3D analyses. Furthermore, the theoretical line asymmetries and shifts show a very satisfactory agreement with observations with an accuracy of typically 50-100 m/s on an absolute velocity scale.     The effects of alcohol on driver performance in a decision making situation

    The results are reviewed of driving simulator and in-vehicle field test experiments of alcohol effects on driver risk taking. The objective was to investigate changes in risk taking under alcoholic intoxication and relate these changes to effects on traffic safety. The experiments involved complex 15 minute driving scenarios requiring decision making and steering and speed control throughout a series of typical driving situations. Monetary rewards and penalties were employed to simulate the real-world motivations inherent in driving. A full placebo experimental design was employed, and measures related to traffic safety, driver/vehicle performance and driver behavior were obtained. Alcohol impairment was found to increase the rate of accidents and speeding tickets. Behavioral measures showed these traffic safety effects to be due to impaired psychomotor performance and perceptual distortions. Subjective estimates of risk failed to show any change in the driver's willingness to take risks when intoxicated

    Realistic Magnetohydrodynamical Simulation of Solar Local Supergranulation

    Three-dimensional numerical simulations of solar surface magnetoconvection using realistic model physics are conducted. The thermal structure of convective motions into the upper radiative layers of the photosphere, the main scales of convective cells and the penetration depths of convection are investigated. We take part of the solar photosphere with size of 60x60 Mm in horizontal direction and by depth 20 Mm from level of the visible solar surface. We use a realistic initial model of the Sun and apply equation of state and opacities of stellar matter. The equations of fully compressible radiation magnetohydrodynamics with dynamical viscosity and gravity are solved. We apply: 1) conservative TVD difference scheme for the magnetohydrodynamics, 2) the diffusion approximation for the radiative transfer, 3) dynamical viscosity from subgrid scale modeling. In simulation we take uniform two-dimesional grid in gorizontal plane and nonuniform grid in vertical direction with number of cells 600x600x204. We use 512 processors with distributed memory multiprocessors on supercomputer MVS-100k in the Joint Computational Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to the proceedings of the GONG 2008 / SOHO XXI conferenc

    Asymptotic Exit Location Distributions in the Stochastic Exit Problem

    Consider a two-dimensional continuous-time dynamical system, with an attracting fixed point SS. If the deterministic dynamics are perturbed by white noise (random perturbations) of strength ϵ\epsilon, the system state will eventually leave the domain of attraction Ω\Omega of SS. We analyse the case when, as ϵ→0\epsilon\to0, the exit location on the boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega is increasingly concentrated near a saddle point HH of the deterministic dynamics. We show that the asymptotic form of the exit location distribution on ∂Ω\partial\Omega is generically non-Gaussian and asymmetric, and classify the possible limiting distributions. A key role is played by a parameter μ\mu, equal to the ratio ∣λs(H)∣/λu(H)|\lambda_s(H)|/\lambda_u(H) of the stable and unstable eigenvalues of the linearized deterministic flow at HH. If μ<1\mu<1 then the exit location distribution is generically asymptotic as ϵ→0\epsilon\to0 to a Weibull distribution with shape parameter 2/μ2/\mu, on the O(ϵμ/2)O(\epsilon^{\mu/2}) length scale near HH. If μ>1\mu>1 it is generically asymptotic to a distribution on the O(ϵ1/2)O(\epsilon^{1/2}) length scale, whose moments we compute. The asymmetry of the asymptotic exit location distribution is attributable to the generic presence of a `classically forbidden' region: a wedge-shaped subset of Ω\Omega with HH as vertex, which is reached from SS, in the ϵ→0\epsilon\to0 limit, only via `bent' (non-smooth) fluctuational paths that first pass through the vicinity of HH. We deduce from the presence of this forbidden region that the classical Eyring formula for the small-ϵ\epsilon exponential asymptotics of the mean first exit time is generically inapplicable.Comment: This is a 72-page Postscript file, about 600K in length.
