    This paper presents the life story of a single small-business owner of immigrant background who wants his companyto grow. His business strategies are analysed both as a part of his own biographical work, and as they wereinfluenced and framed by broader political, economic and social processes. It is shown how his own personalqualities in combination with opportunity structures in the local market provided favourable conditions for hisbreak-in. Breaking out, however, seems to be presented with different types of barriers, such as lack of access tocapital, discrimination, and the fact that new markets may consist of different sorts of network that are in its turnmore difficult for new actors to enter. But even if newcomers often find these barriers difficult for to overcome,individuals are not just passive objects but also have the opportunity to realize their lives according to their own lifeplans

    Thermally-Assisted Spin-Transfer Torque Dynamics in Energy Space

    We consider the general Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert theory underlying the magnetization dynamics of a macrospin magnet subject to spin-torque effects and thermal fluctuations. Thermally activated dynamical properties are analyzed by averaging the full magnetization equations over constant- energy orbits. After averaging, all the relevant dynamical scenarios are a function of the ratio between hard and easy axis anisotropies. We derive analytically the range of currents for which limit cycles exist and discuss the regimes in which the constant energy orbit averaging technique is applicable

    Visual Analysis of Spatio-Temporal Event Predictions: Investigating the Spread Dynamics of Invasive Species

    Invasive species are a major cause of ecological damage and commercial losses. A current problem spreading in North America and Europe is the vinegar fly Drosophila suzukii. Unlike other Drosophila, it infests non-rotting and healthy fruits and is therefore of concern to fruit growers, such as vintners. Consequently, large amounts of data about infestations have been collected in recent years. However, there is a lack of interactive methods to investigate this data. We employ ensemble-based classification to predict areas susceptible to infestation by D. suzukii and bring them into a spatio-temporal context using maps and glyph-based visualizations. Following the information-seeking mantra, we provide a visual analysis system Drosophigator for spatio-temporal event prediction, enabling the investigation of the spread dynamics of invasive species. We demonstrate the usefulness of this approach in two use cases

    Combining data-driven MT systems for improved sign language translation

    In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of combining two data-driven machine translation (MT) systems for the translation of sign languages (SLs). We take the MT systems of two prominent data-driven research groups, the MaTrEx system developed at DCU and the Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) system developed at RWTH Aachen University, and apply their respective approaches to the task of translating Irish Sign Language and German Sign Language into English and German. In a set of experiments supported by automatic evaluation results, we show that there is a definite value to the prospective merging of MaTrEx’s Example-Based MT chunks and distortion limit increase with RWTH’s constraint reordering

    Hand in hand: automatic sign Language to English translation

    In this paper, we describe the first data-driven automatic sign-language-to- speech translation system. While both sign language (SL) recognition and translation techniques exist, both use an intermediate notation system not directly intelligible for untrained users. We combine a SL recognizing framework with a state-of-the-art phrase-based machine translation (MT) system, using corpora of both American Sign Language and Irish Sign Language data. In a set of experiments we show the overall results and also illustrate the importance of including a vision-based knowledge source in the development of a complete SL translation system

    Stability of 2pi domain walls in ferromagnetic nanorings

    The stability of 2pi domain walls in ferromagnetic nanorings is investigated via calculation of the minimum energy path that separates a 2pi domain wall from the vortex state of a ferromagnetic nanoring. Trapped domains are stable when they exist between certain types of transverse domain walls, i.e., walls in which the edge defects on the same side of the magnetic strip have equal sign and thus repel. Here the energy barriers between these configurations and vortex magnetization states are obtained using the string method. Due to the geometry of a ring, two types of 2pi walls must be distinguished that differ by their overall topological index and exchange energy. The minimum energy path corresponds to the expulsion of a vortex. The energy barrier for annihilation of a 2pi wall is compared to the activation energy for transitions between the two ring vortex states.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
