    On the (non)existence of best low-rank approximations of generic IxJx2 arrays

    Several conjectures and partial proofs have been formulated on the (non)existence of a best low-rank approximation of real-valued IxJx2 arrays. We analyze this problem using the Generalized Schur Decomposition and prove (non)existence of a best rank-R approximation for generic IxJx2 arrays, for all values of I,J,R. Moreover, for cases where a best rank-R approximation exists on a set of positive volume only, we provide easy-to-check necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a best rank-R approximation

    Subtracting a best rank-1 approximation may increase tensor rank

    It has been shown that a best rank-R approximation of an order-k tensor may not exist when R>1 and k>2. This poses a serious problem to data analysts using tensor decompositions. It has been observed numerically that, generally, this issue cannot be solved by consecutively computing and subtracting best rank-1 approximations. The reason for this is that subtracting a best rank-1 approximation generally does not decrease tensor rank. In this paper, we provide a mathematical treatment of this property for real-valued 2x2x2 tensors, with symmetric tensors as a special case. Regardless of the symmetry, we show that for generic 2x2x2 tensors (which have rank 2 or 3), subtracting a best rank-1 approximation results in a tensor that has rank 3 and lies on the boundary between the rank-2 and rank-3 sets. Hence, for a typical tensor of rank 2, subtracting a best rank-1 approximation increases the tensor rank.Comment: 37 page

    On best rank-2 and rank-(2,2,2) approximations of order-3 tensors

    It is well known that a best rank-RR approximation of order-3 tensors may not exist for R2R\ge 2. A best rank-(R,R,R)(R,R,R) approximation always exists, however, and is also a best rank-RR approximation when it has rank (at most) RR. For R=2R=2 and real order-3 tensors it is shown that a best rank-2 approximation is also a local minimum of the best rank-(2,2,2) approximation problem. This implies that if all rank-(2,2,2) minima have rank larger than 2, then a best rank-2 approximation does not exist.     Belief in a just what?:Demystifying just world beliefs by distinguishing sources of justice

    People’s Belief in a Just World (BJW) plays an important role in coping with misfortune and unfairness. This paper demonstrates that understanding of the BJW concept, and its consequences for behavior, is enhanced if we specify what (or who) the source of justice might be. We introduce a new scale, the 5-Dimensional Belief in a Just Treatment Scale (BJT5), which distinguishes five causal dimensions of BJW (God, Nature, Other People, Self, Chance). We confirm the 5-factor structure of the BJT5. We then address whether the BJW should be considered a uni- and/or multi- dimensional construct and find support for our multi-dimensional approach. Finally, we demonstrate convergent and discriminant validity with respect to important correlates of BJW as well as action in response to important negative life events and societal attitudes.     Degeneracy in Candecomp/Parafac and Indscal Explained For Several Three-Sliced Arrays With A Two-Valued Typical Rank

    The Candecomp/Parafac (CP) method decomposes a three-way array into a prespecified number R of rank-1 arrays, by minimizing the sum of squares of the residual array. The practical use of CP is sometimes complicated by the occurrence of so-called degenerate sequences of solutions, in which several rank-1 arrays become highly correlated in all three modes and some elements of the rank-1 arrays become arbitrarily large. We consider the real-valued CP decomposition of all known three-sliced arrays, i.e., of size p×q×3, with a two-valued typical rank. These are the 5×3×3 and 8×4×3 arrays, and the 3×3×4 and 3×3×5 arrays with symmetric 3×3 slices. In the latter two cases, CP is equivalent to the Indscal model. For a typical rank of {m,m+1}, we consider the CP decomposition with R=m of an array of rank m+1. We show that (in most cases) the CP objective function does not have a minimum but an infimum. Moreover, any sequence of feasible CP solutions in which the objective value approaches the infimum will become degenerate. We use the tools developed in Stegeman (2006), who considers p×p×2 arrays, and present a framework of analysis which is of use to the future study of CP degeneracy related to a two-valued typical rank. Moreover, our examples show that CP uniqueness is not necessary for degenerate solutions to occur

    On the Non-Existence of Optimal Solutions and the Occurrence of “Degeneracy” in the CANDECOMP/PARAFAC Model

    The CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) model decomposes a three-way array into a prespecified number of R factors and a residual array by minimizing the sum of squares of the latter. It is well known that an optimal solution for CP need not exist. We show that if an optimal CP solution does not exist, then any sequence of CP factors monotonically decreasing the CP criterion value to its infimum will exhibit the features of a so-called “degeneracy”. That is, the parameter matrices become nearly rank deficient and the Euclidean norm of some factors tends to infinity.
