    Luminescence thermometry with transition metal ions. A review

    Transition metal (TM) ion activated phosphors are increasingly being used as probes for luminescence thermometry. Their luminescence is characterized by strong absorption and emission bands that span the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges and are highly susceptible to temperature variations. Due to the latter characteristic, sensitive and reliable remote temperature measurements can be performed by observing temperature-induced changes in TM ion emission intensities, emission bandwidths and bandshifts, and excited state lifetimes, as well as the temperature dependences of the intensity ratios between various emission bands in single or double activated phosphors. This review provides a systematic analysis of the performances of luminescent thermometers based on different TM ions and discusses the relations among the TM spectroscopic properties, characteristics of the host material structure, and thermometric performance. Particular attention is given to the engineering of energy transfer between TM and other dopant ions to obtain highly sensitive thermometers. Finally, several typical application examples from recent literature are highlighted. © 2022 The Author(s

    Perinatal and neonatal outcome in patients with preeclampsia

    Objectives: Preeclampsia (PE) affects 2–5% of pregnant women. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Material and methods: This study included 88 women showing gestational hypertension (GH) or PE symptoms, and their newborns. Results: The rate of FGR was 43% for mothers with PE, compared to 8% with GH. The association was significant, p = < 0.001 but with moderate strength, Cramer’s V = 0.40. The risk of FGR increased nine times when PE occurred, as the odds ratio was 9.25 (CI: 2.46–34.83), p = 0.001. PE was associated with FGR risk if delivery time was less than 34 weeks compared to a delivery time of more than 34 weeks. This was 82% of FGR cases for < 34 weeks, compared with 35% of cases in > 34 group, (p = 0.001; Cramer’s V = 0.50). PE was also associated (p = 0.01, Cramer’s V = 0.27) with the type of delivery, as the caesarean section rate was 74%, compared to 50% in the GH group. This made it three times higher the likelihood of delivery by caesarean section, as the odds ratio was 3.10 (CI: 1.24–7.75), p=0,02. Delivery time was significantly (p < 0.001) shortened to 38 weeks (27–41), compared to 40 weeks (38–42) GH mothers. There was no distinction in median age for PE and GH mothers (p = 0.124). The overall clinical status of neonates was proportional despite the mother’s PE. The sum of Apgar points in the first, and then the second to third minute, did not differ significantly, p = 0.370 and 0.560, respectively. The number of peripheral blood platelets and leucocytes was not reduced (p = 0.821 and 0.534) in infants when the mother suffered from PE. Conclusions: The prediction of adverse maternal outcomes from hypertensive diseases of pregnancy is key to optimal management, including the timing of delivery and planning for the most appropriate place of care.

    Relationship between Serum Angiopoietin-like Proteins 3 and 8 and Atherogenic Lipid Biomarkers in Non-Diabetic Adults Depends on Gender and Obesity

    Hypertriglyceridemia is an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) plays an essential role in the metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs). Angiopoietin-like proteins ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL8 are shown to be important regulators of LPL activity. Increased concentrations of these proteins may reflect cardiovascular risk, and the treatment of patients with dyslipidemia with ANGPTLs inhibitors may decrease this risk. We assessed the gender-specific relationships of serum ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL8 with atherogenic lipid biomarkers and obesity in non-diabetic adults. The study comprised 238 participants aged 25–74 [122 with triglycerides (TG) <150 mg/dL (<1.7 mmol/L) and 116 with hypertriglyceridemia]. Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TG, C-reactive protein (CRP), glycated hemoglobin, apolipoprotein B, small dense LDL-C (sd-LDL-C), ANGPTL3, and ANGPTL8 were measured. Non-HDL-cholesterol, remnant cholesterol (remnant-C) concentrations, and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. Results: Women and men did not differ in terms of age, CRP levels, the percentage of obese subjects, and concentrations of atherogenic lipid biomarkers, except higher TG in males and higher ANGPTL3 concentrations in females. Positive correlations of both ANGPTLs with TG, remnant-C, and sdLDL-C levels were found in females. In males, only ANGPTL3 correlated positively with atherogenic biomarkers, but there were no correlations with ANGPTL8. Concentrations of ANGPTL3 were higher in obese men, whereas ANGPTL8 levels were higher in obese women. In women alone, ANGPTL8 showed very good discrimination power to identify subjects with hypertriglyceridemia (AUC = 0.83). Contrary to this, ANGPTL3 was a better discriminator of hypertriglyceridemia (AUC = 0.78) in male subjects. Regression models, adjusted for age, sex, and BMI showed a weak but significant effect of ANGPTL8 to increase the risk of hypertriglyceridemia. Conclusions: In females, ANGPTL8 is more strongly associated with TRLs metabolism, whereas in males, ANGPTL3 plays a more important role. We suggest sex differences be taken into consideration when applying new therapies with angiopoietin-like proteins inhibitors in the treatment of dyslipidemia

    Serum ANGPTL8 and ANGPTL3 as Predictors of Triglyceride Elevation in Adult Women

    Angiopoietin-like proteins ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL8 have been shown to inhibit lipoprotein lipase, and thus regulate triglyceride level in the circulation. Whether the regulation of lipid metabolism by ANGPTLs is affected by the menopausal status remains unclear. We aimed to assess the relationships between serum ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL8 and atherogenic biomarkers in presumably healthy women during ageing. The study group included 94 women of whom 31 were premenopausal (PRE ≤ 40 years) and 37 were postmenopausal (POST ≥ 52 years). Atherogenic lipid and non-lipid biomarkers and ANGPTLs (ANGPTL3, ANGPTL8) were assayed in serum samples. TG/HDL-C index, non-HDL-cholesterol, remnant cholesterol concentrations, and BMI were calculated. Median levels of ANGPTL3 and concentrations of lipid biomarkers were significantly higher in POST comparing to PRE but ANGPTL8 levels were not different. In PRE, ANGPTL8 levels correlated significantly with TG and TG/HDL-C index while there were no correlations between ANGPTL3 and these biomarkers. In POST both ANGPTLs correlated with TG, sdLDL-C, and TG/HDL-C. ANGPTL8 and sd-LDL-C were the most significant predictors of early triglyceride elevation > 100 mg/dL (1.13 mmol/L) in the whole group and POST whereas the prediction power of ANGPTL3 was negligible in the whole group and non-significant in the subgroups. We demonstrated a significant positive correlation of ANGPTL3 with age category which predisposes to postmenopause. Despite the increase in ANGPTL3 level with ageing the ANGPTL3/ANGPL8 ratio was maintained. In conclusion, ANGPTL8 predicts the early triglyceride elevation better than ANGPTL3, especially in postmenopausal women. The association of ANGPTL3 with triglyceride levels is weaker than ANGPTL8 and depends on menopausal status. We suggest that the choice for the best efficient treatment of dyslipidemia with new inhibitors of angiopoietin-like proteins may depend on the menopausal status

    Antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity of thiourea derivatives bearing 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole scaffold

    A set of 21 thiourea derivatives were prepared through reacting 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole with the commercial aliphatic and aromatic isothiocyanates. The aliphatic isothiocyanate was used as a reagent leading to substitution on NH atom of 3-aminotriazole ring, whereas the triazole amino group was substituted when isothiocyanate group was bonded to the Csp2 hybridized atom, e.g. an aryl or C=O fragment. All compounds were evaluated in vitro for the antimicrobial activity. The derivatives 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 12 showed the highest inhibition against Gram-positive cocci (S. aureus and S. epidermidis). The observed MIC values were in the range of 4-32 ÎĽg/mL. Compounds were also tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against the hospital methicillinresistant strains of S. aureus. The observed MIC values varied from 4 to 64 ÎĽg/mL. The products 4 and 10 effectively inhibited the formation of biofilms of the methicillin-resistant and standard strains of S. epidermidis. The compound 10 was found to be more promising with IC50 values of 2-6 ÎĽg/mL as compared to the control. Moreover, the cytotoxicity against the MT-4 cells of all studied thioureas was evaluated.     Synthesis, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of thiourea derivatives incorporating 3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl moiety

    A total of 31 of thiourea derivatives was prepared reacting 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline and commercial aliphatic and aromatic isothiocyanates. The yields varied from 35% to 82%. All compounds were evaluated in vitro for antimicrobial activity. Derivatives 3, 5, 6, 9, 15, 24 and 27 showed the highest inhibition against Gram-positive cocci (standard and hospital strains). The observed MIC values were in the range of 0.25e16 μg/ml. Inhibitory activity of thioureas 5 and 15 against topoisomerase IV isolated from Staphylococcus aureus was studied. Products 5 and 15 effectively inhibited the formation of biofilms of methicillin-resistant and standard strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis. Moreover, all obtained thioureas were evaluated for cytotoxicity and antiviral activity against a large panel of DNA and RNA viruses. Compounds 5, 6, 8e12, 15 resulted cytotoxic against MT-4 cells (CC50≤ 10μM)

    Exploring the Role of Relational Practices in Water Governance Using a Game-Based Approach

    The growing complexity and interdependence of water management processes requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders in water governance. Multi-party collaboration is increasingly vital at both the strategy development and implementation levels. Multi-party collaboration involves a process of joint decision-making among key stakeholders in a problem domain directed towards the future of that domain. However, the common goal is not present from the beginning; rather, the common goal emerges during the process of collaboration. Unfortunately, when the conflicting interests of different actors are at stake, the large majority of environmental multi-party efforts often do not reliably deliver sustainable improvements to policy and/or practice. One of the reasons for this, which has been long established by many case studies, is that social learning with a focus on relational practices is missing. The purpose of this paper is to present the design and initial results of a pilot study that utilized a game-based approach to explore the effects of relational practices on the effectiveness of water governance. This paper verifies the methods used by addressing the following question: are game mechanisms, protocols for facilitation and observation, the recording of decisions and results, and participant surveys adequate to reliably test hypotheses about behavioral decisions related to water governance? We used the “Lords of the Valley” (LOV) game, which focuses on the local-level management of a hypothetical river valley involving many stakeholders. We used an observation protocol to collect data on the quality of relational practices and compared this data with the quantitative outcomes achieved by participants in the game. In this pilot study, we ran the game three times with different groups of participants, and here we provide the outcomes within the context of verifying and improving the methods
