The Occupational Participation of a Family of Children with Disabilities
The purpose of this study was to obtain an understanding of how one family of children with disabilities views their occupational participation. A qualitative case study was used to provide a holistic view of occupational participation from individual family members. Data were gathered through interviews with all members of the family, observations of the family engaging in typical occupations, and artwork collected from the children. Data collected during interviews and observations were analyzed using the a priori coding method, with the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) serving as the theoretical framework used to identify codes. Current findings indicate that an understanding of occupational participation of the family unit cannot be established from observation alone, but must consider the individual family members\u27 perspectives as well. Discussion focuses on the influence of the MOHO framework, importance of family-centered care, and the implications for occupational therapists working with children and their families

Improved Tracking of Targets by Cameras on a Mars Rover
A paper describes a method devised to increase the robustness and accuracy of tracking of targets by means of three stereoscopic pairs of video cameras on a Mars-rover-type exploratory robotic vehicle. Two of the camera pairs are mounted on a mast that can be adjusted in pan and tilt; the third camera pair is mounted on the main vehicle body. Elements of the method include a mast calibration, a camera-pointing algorithm, and a purely geometric technique for handing off tracking between different camera pairs at critical distances as the rover approaches a target of interest. The mast calibration is an extension of camera calibration in which the camera images of calibration targets at known positions are collected at various pan and tilt angles. In the camerapointing algorithm, pan and tilt angles are computed by a closed-form, non-iterative solution of inverse kinematics of the mast combined with mathematical models of the cameras. The purely geometric camera-handoff technique involves the use of stereoscopic views of a target of interest in conjunction with the mast calibration
Ideal Bose gas in fractal dimensions and superfluid He in porous media
Physical properties of ideal Bose gas with the fractal dimensionality between
D=2 and D=3 are theoretically investigated. Calculation shows that the
characteristic features of the specific heat and the superfluid density of
ideal Bose gas in fractal dimensions are strikingly similar to those of
superfluid Helium-4 in porous media. This result indicates that the geometrical
factor is dominant over mutual interactions in determining physical properties
of Helium-4 in porous media.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
A Comprehensive Three-Dimensional Model of the Cochlea
The human cochlea is a remarkable device, able to discern extremely small
amplitude sound pressure waves, and discriminate between very close
frequencies. Simulation of the cochlea is computationally challenging due to
its complex geometry, intricate construction and small physical size. We have
developed, and are continuing to refine, a detailed three-dimensional
computational model based on an accurate cochlear geometry obtained from
physical measurements. In the model, the immersed boundary method is used to
calculate the fluid-structure interactions produced in response to incoming
sound waves. The model includes a detailed and realistic description of the
various elastic structures present.
In this paper, we describe the computational model and its performance on the
latest generation of shared memory servers from Hewlett Packard. Using compiler
generated threads and OpenMP directives, we have achieved a high degree of
parallelism in the executable, which has made possible several large scale
numerical simulation experiments that study the interesting features of the
cochlear system. We show several results from these simulations, reproducing
some of the basic known characteristics of cochlear mechanics.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
