Species Limits and Phylogeography of North American Cricket Frogs (Acris: Hylidae)
Cricket frogs are widely distributed across the eastern United States and two species, the northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans) and the southern cricket frog (A. gryllus) are currently recognized. We generated a phylogenetic hypothesis for Acris using fragments of nuclear and mitochondrial genes in separate and combined phylogenetic analyses. We also used distance methods and fixation indices to evaluate species limits within the genus and the validity of currently recognized subspecies of A. crepitans. The distributions of existing A. crepitans subspecies, defined by morphology and call types, do not match the distributions of evolutionary lineages recovered using our genetic data. We discuss a scenario of call evolution to explain this disparity. We also recovered distinct phylogeographic groups within A. crepitans and A. gryllus that are congruent with other codistributed taxa. Under a lineage-based species concept, we recognize Acris blanchardi as a distinct species. The importance of this revised taxonomy is discussed in light of the dramatic declines in A. blanchardi across the northern and western portions of its range

Heterogeneous Spine Loss in Layer 5 Cortical Neurons after Spinal Cord Injury
A large thoracic spinal cord injury disconnects the hindlimb (HL) sensory-motor cortex from its target, the lumbar spinal cord. The fate of the synaptic structures of the axotomized cortical neurons is not well studied. We evaluated the density of spines on axotomized corticospinal neurons at 3, 7, and 21 days after the injury in adult mice expressing yellow fluorescence protein in a subset of layer 5 neurons. Spine density of the dendritic segment proximal to the soma (in layer 5) declined as early as 3 days after injury, far preceding the onset of somatic atrophy. In the distal segment (in layer 2/3), spine loss was slower and less severe than in the proximal segment. Axotomy of corticospinal axons in the brainstem (pyramidotomy) induced a comparable reduction of spine density, demonstrating that the loss is not restricted to the neurons axotomized in the thoracic spinal cord. Surprisingly, in both forms of injury, the spine density of putative non-axotomized layer 5 neurons was reduced as well. In-the-Gap SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova, Var73 Dra with a Supercycle of about 60 Days
An intensive photometric-observation campaign of the recently discovered SU
UMa-type dwarf nova, Var73 Dra was conducted from 2002 August to 2003 February.
We caught three superoutbursts in 2002 October, December and 2003 February. The
recurrence cycle of the superoutburst (supercycle) is indicated to be 60
d, the shortest among the values known so far in SU UMa stars and close to
those of ER UMa stars. The superhump periods measured during the first two
superoutbursts were 0.104885(93) d, and 0.10623(16) d, respectively. A
0.10424(3)-d periodicity was detected in quiescence. The change rate of the
superhump period during the second superoutburst was , which
is an order of magnitude larger than the largest value ever known. Outburst
activity has changed from a phase of frequent normal outbursts and infrequent
superoutbursts in 2001 to a phase of infrequent normal outbursts and frequent
superoutbursts in 2002. Our observations are negative to an idea that this star
is an related object to ER UMa stars in terms of the duty cycle of the
superoutburst and the recurrence cycle of the normal outburst. However, to
trace the superhump evolution throughout a superoutburst, and from quiescence
