On a preconditioner for time domain boundary element methods
We propose a time stepping scheme for the space-time systems obtained from
Galerkin time-domain boundary element methods for the wave equation. Based on
extrapolation, the method proves stable, becomes exact for increasing degrees
of freedom and can be used either as a preconditioner, or as an efficient
standalone solver for scattering problems with smooth solutions. It also
significantly reduces the number of GMRES iterations for screen problems, with
less regularity, and we explore its limitations for enriched methods based on
non-polynomial approximation spaces.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure
How to recognize opportunities: Heterarchical search in a Wall Street trading room
Our task in this paper is to analyze the organization of trading in the era of quantitative finance. To do so, we conduct an ethnography of arbitrage, the trading strategy that best exemplifies finance in the wake of the quantitative revolution. In contrast to value and momentum investing, we argue, arbitrage involves an art of association - the construction of equivalence (comparability) of properties across different assets. In place of essential or relationa l characteristics, the peculiar valuation that takes place in arbitrage is based on an operation that makes something the measure of something else - associating securities to each other. The process of recognizing opportunities and the practices of making novel associations are shaped by the specific socio-spatial and socio-technical configurations of the trading room. Resolving identities: Successive crises in a trading room after 9/11
How do organizations cope with extreme uncertainty? The existing literature is divided on this issue: some argue that organizations deal best with uncertainty in the environment by reproducing it in the organization, whereas others contend that the orga nization should be protected from the environment. In this paper we study the case of a Wall Street investment bank that lost its entire office and trading technology in the terrorist attack of September 11 th. The traders survived, but were forced to relocate to a makeshift trading room in New Jersey. During the six months the traders spent outside New York City, they had to deal with fears and insecurities inside the company as well as outside it: anxiety about additional attacks, questions of professional identity, doubts about the future of the firm, and ambiguities about the future re-location of the trading room. The firm overcame these uncertainties by protecting the tradersâ identities and their ability to engage in sensemaking. Ligand-guided homology modeling drives identification of novel histamine H3 receptor ligands
In this study, we report a ligand-guided homology modeling approach allowing the analysis of relevant binding site residue conformations and the identification of two novel histamine H3 receptor ligands with binding affinity in the nanomolar range. The newly developed method is based on exploiting an essential charge interaction characteristic for aminergic G-protein coupled receptors for ranking 3D receptor models appropriate for the discovery of novel compounds through virtual screening

Testing and being tested in pandemic times
The coronavirus pandemic is witness to a great proliferation of two types of tests. The first type is testing â new medical diagnostic tests as well as epidemiological models that simulate and project the course of the virus. In the second type, actors, organizations, and institutions are being tested in this moment of social and political crisis. This essay analyzes the similarities and differences between these two major types of tests in order to understand their entanglements in the crisis. In the process, we find a great diversity of tests operating in multiple registers, themselves not clearly demarcated, often combining and sometimes conflating, for example, scientific and public discourse. The study opens by identifying three aspects of testing, drawn from the sociology of testing. First, tests are frequently proxies (or projections) that stand for something. Second, a test is a critical moment that stands out â whether because it is a moment deliberately separated out or because it is a puzzling or troublesome âsituationâ that disrupts the flow of social life. Third, when someone or something is put to the test, of interest is whether it stands up to the challenge. These insights serve as the building blocks for addressing three major issues â representation, selection, and accountability â regarding testing in the time of the coronavirus crisis
A Search For Star Formation in the Smith Cloud
Motivated by the idea that a subset of HVCs trace dark matter substructure in
the Local Group, we search for signs of star formation in the Smith Cloud, a
nearby ~2x10^6 Msun HVC currently falling into the Milky Way. Using GALEX NUV
and WISE/2MASS NIR photometry, we apply a series of color and apparent
magnitude cuts to isolate candidate O and B stars that are plausibly associated
with the Smith Cloud. We find an excess of stars along the line of sight to the
cloud, but not at a statistically significant level relative to a control
region. The number of stars found in projection on the cloud after removing an
estimate of the contamination by the Milky Way implies an average star
formation rate surface density of 10^(-4.8 +/- 0.3) Msun yr^(-1) kpc^(-2),
assuming the cloud has been forming stars at a constant rate since its first
passage through the Milky Way ~70 Myr ago. This value is consistent with the
star formation rate expected based on the average gas density of the cloud. We
also discuss how the newly discovered star forming galaxy Leo P has very
similar properties to the Smith Cloud, but its young stellar population would
not have been detected at a statistically significant level using our method.
Thus, we cannot yet rule out the idea that the Smith Cloud is really a dwarf

Solutions to the wave equation in the exterior of a polyhedral domain or a
screen in exhibit singular behavior from the edges and corners.
We present quasi-optimal -explicit estimates for the approximation of the
Dirichlet and Neumann traces of these solutions for uniform time steps and
(globally) quasi-uniform meshes on the boundary. The results are applied to an
-version of the time domain boundary element method. Numerical examples
confirm the theoretical results for the Dirichlet problem both for screens and
