Effect of a new physiotherapy concept on bone mineral density, muscle force and gross motor function in children with bilateral cerebral palsy
Copyright @ 2010 The Authors.Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a new physiotherapy concept on bone density, muscle force and motor function in bilateral spastic cerebral palsy children. Methods: In a retrospective data analysis 78 children were analysed. The concept included whole body vibration, physiotherapy, resistance training and treadmill training. The concept is structured in two in-patient stays and two periods of three months home-based vibration training. Outcome measures were dual-energy x-ray absorption (DXA), Leonardo Tilt Table and a modified Gross Motor Function Measure before and after six months of training. Results: Percent changes were highly significant for bone mineral density, -content, muscle mass and significant for angle of verticalisation, muscle force and modified Gross Motor Function Measure after six months training. Conclusions: The new physiotherapy concept had a significant effect on bone mineral density, muscle force and gross motor function in bilateral spastic cerebral palsy children. This implicates an amelioration in all International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health levels. The study serves as a basis for future research on evidence based paediatric physiotherapy taking into account developmental implications
Nulling interferometry: impact of exozodiacal clouds on the performance of future life-finding space missions
Earth-sized planets around nearby stars are being detected for the first time
by ground-based radial velocity and space-based transit surveys. This milestone
is opening the path towards the definition of missions able to directly detect
the light from these planets, with the identification of bio-signatures as one
of the main objectives. In that respect, both ESA and NASA have identified
nulling interferometry as one of the most promising techniques. The ability to
study distant planets will however depend on exozodiacal dust clouds
surrounding the target stars. In this paper, we assess the impact of
exozodiacal dust clouds on the performance of an infrared nulling
interferometer in the Emma X-array configuration. For the nominal mission
architecture with 2-m aperture telescopes, we found that point-symmetric
exozodiacal dust discs about 100 times denser than the solar zodiacal cloud can
be tolerated in order to survey at least 150 targets during the mission
lifetime. Considering modeled resonant structures created by an Earth-like
planet orbiting at 1 AU around a Sun-like star, we show that the tolerable dust
density for planet detection goes down to about 15 times the solar zodiacal
density for face-on systems and decreases with the disc inclination. The upper
limits on the tolerable exozodiacal dust density derived in this study must be
considered as rather pessimistic, but still give a realistic estimation of the
typical sensitivity that we will need to reach on exozodiacal discs in order to
prepare the scientific programme of future Earth-like planet characterisation

Cryogenic thermal control technology summaries
A summarization and categorization is presented of the pertinent literature associated with cryogenic thermal control technology having potential application to in-orbit fluid transfer systems and/or associated space storage. Initially, a literature search was conducted to obtain pertinent documents for review. Reports determined to be of primary significance were summarized in detail. Each summary, where applicable, consists of; (1) report identification, (2) objective(s) of the work, (3) description of pertinent work performed, (4)major results, and (5) comments of the reviewer (GD/C). Specific areas covered are; (1) multilayer insulation of storage tanks with and without vacuum jacketing, (2) other insulation such as foams, shadow shields, microspheres, honeycomb, vent cooling and composites, (3) vacuum jacketed and composite fluid lines, and (4) low conductive tank supports and insulation penetrations. Reports which were reviewed and not summarized, along with reasons for not summarizing, are also listed
The Heterogeneous Impact of International Migration on Left‐behind Households: Evidence from Bangladesh
This article investigates the heterogeneous effects of international migration on the expenditure of Bangladeshi migrant households. Adopting a counterfactual framework, we estimate the impact of migration on per capita expenditure of left-behind households according to their position in the counterfactual expenditure distribution and the length of the migration period. The effects on households\u2019 social mobility and on inequality are also assessed. The analysis indicates that migration has a positive impact on per capita expenditure and represents an important vehicle of social mobility, but may also be a source of inequality. We also find that only a tiny share of international migrants originates from households belonging to the lowest expenditure quintile and, since most of the characteristics which seem to influence the migration decision cannot be shaped by policy interventions, our results also suggest that pro-migration policies might not be effective in lifting those most in need out of poverty
Triphilic ionic-liquid mixtures: fluorinated and non-fluorinated aprotic ionic-liquid mixtures
We present here the possibility of forming triphilic mixtures from alkyl- and fluoroalkylimidazolium ionic liquids, thus, macroscopically homogeneous mixtures for which instead of the often observed two domainspolar and nonpolarthree stable microphases are present: polar, lipophilic, and fluorous ones. The fluorinated side chains of the cations indeed self-associate and form domains that are segregated from those of the polar and alkyl domains. To enable miscibility, despite the generally preferred macroscopic separation between fluorous and alkyl moieties, the importance of strong hydrogen bonding is shown. As the long-range structure in the alkyl and fluoroalkyl domains is dependent on the composition of the liquid, we propose that the heterogeneous, triphilic structure can be easily tuned by the molar ratio of the components. We believe that further development may allow the design of switchable, smart liquids that change their properties in a predictable way according to their composition or even their environment
Giant Molecular Clouds are More Concentrated to Spiral Arms than Smaller Clouds
From our catalog of Milky Way molecular clouds, created using a temperature
thresholding algorithm on the Bell Laboratories 13CO Survey, we have extracted
two subsets:(1) Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), clouds that are definitely
larger than 10^5 solar masses, even if they are at their `near distance', and
(2) clouds that are definitely smaller than 10^5 solar masses, even if they are
at their `far distance'. The positions and velocities of these clouds are
compared to the loci of spiral arms in (l, v) space. The velocity separation of
each cloud from the nearest spiral arm is introduced as a `concentration
statistic'. Almost all of the GMCs are found near spiral arms. The density of
smaller clouds is enhanced near spiral arms, but some clouds (~10%) are
unassociated with any spiral arm. The median velocity separation between a GMC
and the nearest spiral arm is 3.4+-0.6 km/s, whereas the median separation
between smaller clouds and the nearest spiral arm is 5.5+-0.2 km/s.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
