Electroantennogram Responses of the Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Cereal Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) to Volatile Chemicals of Seedling Oats

    Get PDF
Armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta, eIectroantennogram (EAG) responses to 10 volatile chemicals of seedling oats and three of injured green plants were significantly different from each other while cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melallopus, EAG responses were not significantly different. The EAG responses of both species did not vary significantly with respect to sex, age, or between the antennae of the same specimen. (E)-2-hexenol, a compound extracted from injured green plants, yielded the highest peak response for the armyworm while more cereal leaf beetle antennae responded to this chemical than any other chemical. Armyworm antennallife averaged 38 + 20 min while those of the cereal leaf beetle averaged 6 + 14 min

Breast Abscess Management and the Role of Post Incisional Antibiotics

    Get PDF
Introduction: Breast abscess is a common condition affecting women in the developing world, and is commonly treated with incision and drainage. Incision and drainage is associated with a long hospital stay, requires general anesthesia and daily wound care which is associated with a higher pain score and interrupts breastfeeding for puerperal cases. It is also associated with poor cosmetic results and often necessitates a return to theatre for wound closure.. The aim of the study was to describe the presentation and management of patients presenting with breast abscess at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. Methods: We conducted a 7-year retrospective audit of all patients managed for breast abscesses at The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. Demographic data, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management and follow up were summarized. We later conducted a practice audit on the use of antibiotics for breast abscess among the delegates of a surgical conference. Results: A total of 75 patients were analyzed. Just over half (50.7%) had puerperal abscesses. The demographics, presentation and natural history do not differ between puerperal and non-puerperal abscesses. Nearly all patients (99%) underwent incision and drainage. Fifty two percent affected left breast, 45% right and 3% were bilateral. Majority of respondents of the survey used antibiotics afterincision and drainage. Conclusion: There is high rate of antibiotic use which is not backed by literature both at the institution and across the country. More needs to be done to assess if there is benefit of antibiotics after incision and drainage of breast abscesses. Tertiary level hospitals should popularize ultrasound guided aspiration for treatment of breast abscess as it may be non inferior to incision and drainageKeywords: Breast Abscess, Image Guided Drainage, Incision and Drainage, Antibiotic

Pacific oyster disease and mortality studies in California

    Get PDF
Investigation of Pacific oyster mortalities was carried out over a six-year period in major northern and central California oyster rearing areas. Effort was directed toward defining areas of high oyster mortality and determining possible etiologies of observed losses through monthly monitoring and sampling of experimental and commercial oyster populations in Morro Bay, Elkhorn Slough, Drakes Estero, Tomales Bay and Humboldt Bay. Hydrographic data was collected in all areas and a two year study of phytoplankton and water quality in Humboldt Bay was initiated to observe relationships with oyster mortality patterns. Research undertaken to develop methods to alleviate losses among Pacific oyster populations included an oyster seed source study, investigation of optimal oyster culturing techniques and preliminary efforts to develop a mortality resistant strain of oysters in Humboldt Bay. The cause of mortality among Pacific oyster populations in Humboldt Bay remains uncertain but a bacterial etiology correlated with elevated water temperatures is suspected. The best method of circumvention of losses appears to be the culturing of "domestic" seed sources on racks. (55pp.

Distance Education And Learning Styles: Some Interesting Results

    Get PDF
The rush to offer web courses has left many questions as to what makes them effective and satisfactory. Important issues are: the perceived advantages of web-based courses; appropriate pedagogical tools (e.g., streaming media, PowerPoint presentations) to facilitate student-content interaction, media richness, and the influence of antecedent characteristics, such as gender, experience, motivation, and learning styles. Research here indicates support for media richness, web-based course advantages, some pedagogies, and minimal support for learning styles, at least Gardner’s multiple intelligences and Keirsey’s personality styles
