    An artificial intelligence-based structural health monitoring system for aging aircraft

    To reduce operating expenses, airlines are now using the existing fleets of commercial aircraft well beyond their originally anticipated service lives. The repair and maintenance of these 'aging aircraft' has therefore become a critical safety issue, both to the airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration. This paper presents the results of an innovative research program to develop a structural monitoring system that will be used to evaluate the integrity of in-service aerospace structural components. Currently in the final phase of its development, this monitoring system will indicate when repair or maintenance of a damaged structural component is necessary

    On the mechanism for orbital-ordering in KCuF3

    The Mott insulating perovskite KCuF3 is considered the archetype of an orbitally-ordered system. By using the LDA+dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) method, we investigate the mechanism for orbital-ordering (OO) in this material. We show that the purely electronic Kugel-Khomskii super-exchange mechanism (KK) alone leads to a remarkably large transition temperature of T_KK about 350 K. However, orbital-order is experimentally believed to persist to at least 800 K. Thus Jahn-Teller distortions are essential for stabilizing orbital-order at such high temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Multiprotein DNA looping

    DNA looping plays a fundamental role in a wide variety of biological processes, providing the backbone for long range interactions on DNA. Here we develop the first model for DNA looping by an arbitrarily large number of proteins and solve it analytically in the case of identical binding. We uncover a switch-like transition between looped and unlooped phases and identify the key parameters that control this transition. Our results establish the basis for the quantitative understanding of fundamental cellular processes like DNA recombination, gene silencing, and telomere maintenance.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    A Generalized Preferential Attachment Model for Business Firms Growth Rates: II. Mathematical Treatment

    We present a preferential attachment growth model to obtain the distribution P(K)P(K) of number of units KK in the classes which may represent business firms or other socio-economic entities. We found that P(K)P(K) is described in its central part by a power law with an exponent ϕ=2+b/(1b)\phi=2+b/(1-b) which depends on the probability of entry of new classes, bb. In a particular problem of city population this distribution is equivalent to the well known Zipf law. In the absence of the new classes entry, the distribution P(K)P(K) is exponential. Using analytical form of P(K)P(K) and assuming proportional growth for units, we derive P(g)P(g), the distribution of business firm growth rates. The model predicts that P(g)P(g) has a Laplacian cusp in the central part and asymptotic power-law tails with an exponent ζ=3\zeta=3. We test the analytical expressions derived using heuristic arguments by simulations.     Mapping functions and critical behavior of percolation on rectangular domains

    The existence probability EpE_p and the percolation probability PP of the bond percolation on rectangular domains with different aspect ratios RR are studied via the mapping functions between systems with different aspect ratios. The superscaling behavior of EpE_p and PP for such systems with exponents aa and bb, respectively, found by Watanabe, Yukawa, Ito, and Hu in [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{93}, 190601 (2004)] can be understood from the lower order approximation of the mapping functions fRf_R and gRg_R for EpE_p and PP, respectively; the exponents aa and bb can be obtained from numerically determined mapping functions fRf_R and gRg_R, respectively.Comment: 17 pages with 6 figure

    The Boson peak in supercooled water

    We perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations of the TIP4P/2005 model of water to investigate the origin of the Boson peak reported in experiments on supercooled water in nanoconfined pores, and in hydration water around proteins. We find that the onset of the Boson peak in supercooled bulk water coincides with the crossover to a predominantly low-density-like liquid below the Widom line TWT_W. The frequency and onset temperature of the Boson peak in our simulations of bulk water agree well with the results from experiments on nanoconfined water. Our results suggest that the Boson peak in water is not an exclusive effect of confinement. We further find that, similar to other glass-forming liquids, the vibrational modes corresponding to the Boson peak are spatially extended and are related to transverse phonons found in the parent crystal, here ice Ih.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure

    Critical exponents and the correlation length in the charge exchange manganite spin glass Eu_{0.5}Ba_{0.5}MnO_{3}

    The critical regime of the charge exchange (CE) manganite spin glass Eu_{0.5}Ba_{0.5}MnO_{3} is investigated using linear and non linear magnetic susceptibility and the divergence of the third ordered susceptibility (chi{_3}) signifying the onset of a conventional freezing transition is experimentally demonstrated. The divergence in chi{_3}, dynamical scaling of the linear susceptibility and relevant scaling equations are used to determine the critical exponents associated with this freezing transition, the values of which match well with the 3D Ising universality class. Magnetic field dependence of the spin glass response function is used to estimate the spin correlation length which is seen to be larger than the charge/orbital correlation length reported in this system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Figure
