    Implications of the Ganea Condition

Suppose the spaces X and X cross A have the same Lusternik-Schnirelmann category: cat(X cross A)= cat(X). Then there is a strict inequality cat(X cross (A halfsmash B)) < cat (X) + cat(A halfsmash B) for every space B, provided the connectivity of A is large enough (depending only on X). This is applied to give a partial verification of a conjecture of Iwase on the category of products of spaces with spheres.Comment: Published by Algebraic and Geometric Topology at http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/agt/AGTVol4/agt-4-36.abs.htm

Investigating High and Low Fifth Grade Urban Readers Through Reading Autobiographies

The push for higher standards and increased performance for children in the United States, has led to many different strategies being used to assist teachers in improving their students\u27 scores. The subjects in this study were from five fifth grade classrooms in an urban school district in Western New York. The eighty-four students consisted of fifty-five females and twenty-nine males. The students were given lessons in reading and writing autobiographies for Readers\u27 Workshop. At the end of the week the students were asked to write an autobiography about how they learned to read. The results of the study yielded sixty-four autobiographies. The top and bottom readers were determined by the Diagnostic Reading Assessment Test (DRA\u27s). The accomplished readers had more family support throughout school, could name several books read to them when young and all had read to a person or family member while growing up. Family did not support the struggling readers when they started school. They felt that reading was harder because of larger and bigger words. Most of the poor readers did not name more than one book or any book at all. The main point for the struggling readers was the lack of influences for their reading

    Interactive agent generated architecture

Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1996.Includes bibliographical references (p. 54-55).The thesis explores architectural form generation through two behavior based artificial intelligence approaches: the communication of agents in an unpredictable simulation system, and the codification of information within an evolutionary process. Both concepts stem from the evaluation of potentially definable mental constructions involving the process of translation and generation through base-level procedural methods. The experiments look towards the implementation of alternative computational processes regarding knowledge encapsulation, process recording, simulation environments, agent communication and interpretation from bottom up design approaches. The experiment explores alternative approaches to design theory within the discipline of architectural computation.by Jeffrey Charles Stanley Krause.M.S

TARGET MARKETS FOR RETAIL OUTLETS OF LANDSCAPE PLANTS

    Get PDF
Merchandisers of landscape plants can increase the effectiveness of their marketing strategies by identifying target markets. Using a full information maximum likelihood tobit procedure on a system of three equations, target markets for different types of retail outlets in Georgia were identified. The results lend support and empirical evidence to the premise that different retail outlet types have different target markets and thus should develop different market strategies. The estimated target markets are identified and possible marketing strategies suitable for each type of retail outlet are suggested.Crop Production/Industries,

ESTIMATING IMPLICIT MARGINAL PRICES OF QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF TOMATOES

    Get PDF
A hedonic price function is developed for estimating the implicit prices for selected quality characteristics of fresh tomatoes at three points in the marketing season. The estimation of this function, proposed as a method of evaluating change in the post-harvest system, is accomplished using a flexible functional form. Those quality characteristics that most affect the price of tomatoes can help determine the economic feasibility of alternative handling techniques or new technologies.Demand and Price Analysis,
