Sustaining Child Outcomes from the Early Childhood Initiative Project: Evaluation of School Age Developmentally Appropriate Practices

Research has shown that high quality early childcare can provide positive changes in children\u27s academic, social, and behavioral development. These positive early experiences are essential for children who are at developmental risk. Unfortunately, the positive outcomes from early education programs often diminish or disappear over time. Research has clearly shown the benefits of developmentally appropriate, high quality early childhood intervention. However, limited research has been conducted on the influence of developmentally appropriate practices on child outcomes during the early elementary school years. The purpose of this study was to examine the outcome of DAP from children who were enrolled in The Early Childhood Initiative (ECI) project. The ECI project was developed to provide quality early childcare for children from infancy to preschool living in high-risk neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Developmentally appropriate practices in early elementary classrooms were found to have a statistically significant relationship to children\u27s academic performance. The Social Context of the classroom was a positive predictor of children\u27s academic achievement and children in DAP classrooms rated as Good demonstrated a significant difference in academic performance in comparison to children in classrooms rated as Inadequate. Reading achievement was significantly higher in Good DAP classrooms than Minimal DAP classrooms

Designing a Semantically Rich Visual Iinterface for Cultural Digital Libraries Using the UNESCO Multilingual Thesaurus

This paper reports on the design of a visual user interface for the UNESCO digital portal. The interface makes use of the UNESCO multilingual thesaurus to provide visualized views of terms and their relationships and the way in which spaces associated with the thesaurus, the query and the results can be integrated into a single user interface.\u

Sexual Harassment Experiences and Harmful Alcohol Use in a Military Sample: Differences in Gender and the Mediating Role of Depression

The current investigation identified the genderspecific prevalence of sexual harassment and assault experienced during U.S. military service and the negative mental and physical health correlates of these experiences in a sample of former reservists. We surveyed a stratified random sample of 3,946 former reservists about their experiences during military service and their current health, including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, somatic symptoms, and medical conditions. Prevalence estimates and confidence intervals of sexual harassment and assault were calculated. A series of logistic regressions identified associations with health symptoms and conditions. Both men and women had a substantial prevalence of military sexual harassment and assault. As expected, higher proportions of female reservists reported sexual harassment (60.0% vs 27.2% for males) and sexual assault (13.1% vs 1.6% for males). For both men and women, these experiences were associated with deleterious mental and physical health conditions, with sexual assault demonstrating stronger associations than other types of sexual harassment in most cases. This investigation is the first to document high instances of these experiences among reservists. These data provide further evidence that experiences of sexual harassment and assault during military service have significant implications for the healthcare needs of military veterans

The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) is committed to increasing the effectiveness of art librarians and art information professionals by focusing its efforts on professional and continuing education, as well as professional development activities. This document aims to identify the fundamental knowledge, behaviors, and skills currently essential to most professional positions within the art information field. It is intended to be a flexible document that can be revised as the field evolves and changes. The revised edition of the Core Competencies was created by Karen Stafford, Maggie Portis, Amy Andres and Janine Henri, with input from the Professional Development Committee and the ARLIS/NA Executive Board. The new edition has been revised to emphasize the specialized skills needed by art information professionals that are beyond general competencies expected of all information professionals. The first edition (2006) was written by Heather Ball and Sara Harrington with members of the ARLIS/NA Professional Development Committee and Core Competencies Subcommittee

Long-term site fidelity of endangered smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) from different mothers

Understanding how endangered species use nursery habitats is vital for recovery planning. Research on the smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) has shown that areas of estuarine nurseries, called hotspots, are used consistently. The objectives of our study were 1) to determine whether 10 young-of-the-year smalltooth sawfish in an artificial, non-main-stem portion (i.e., a seawall canal system) of a hotspot were descended from one or different mothers and 2) to document long-term habitat use by these individuals. At least 4 mothers contributed to the group, which comprised siblings, half-siblings, and unrelated individuals. Young sawfish exhibited site fidelity to their capture location, spending 61% of their time there. Continuous residency lasted as long as 86 days, but these fish made small-scale diel

A multi-jurisdictional outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to backyard poultry—Australia, 2020

Zoonotic salmonellosis can occur either through direct contact with an infected animal or through indirect contact, such as exposure to an infected animal's contaminated environment. Between May and August 2020, a multi-jurisdictional outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium (STm) infection due to zoonotic transmission was investigated in Australia. In total, 38 outbreak cases of STm with a median age of 5 years were reported. Epidemiological investigation showed contact with live poultry to be a common risk factor with most cases recently purchasing one-week old chicks from produce/pet stores. Traceback investigation of cases identified 25 product/pet stores of which 18 were linked to a single poultry breeder farm. On farm environmental sampling identified the same STm genotype as identified in cases. Whole genome sequencing of both environmental and human outbreak isolates found them to be highly related by phylogenetic analysis. This investigation describes the first documented widespread zoonotic salmonellosis outbreak in Australia attributed to backyard poultry exposure and identified potential risk factors and prevention and control measures for future outbreaks. Prevention of future outbreaks will require an integrated One Health approach involving the poultry industry, produce/pet store owners, animal healthcare providers, public health and veterinary health agencies and the public
