International Mobility of the Highly Skilled, Endogenous R&D, and Public Infrastructure Investment
This paper theoretically and empirically analyzes the interaction of emigration of highly skilled labor, an economy’s income gap to potential host economies of expatriates, and optimal public infrastructure investment. In a model with endogenous education and R&D investment decisions we show that international integration of the market for skilled labor aggravates between-country income inequality by harming those which are source economies to begin with while benefiting host economies. When brain drain increases in source economies, public infrastructure investment is optimally adjusted downward, whereas host economies increase it. Evidence from 77 countries well supports our theoretical hypotheses.R&D investment, public infrastructure investment, educational choice, cross-country evidence, brain drain
Mechanical Properties And Thermal Residual Stresses Of Zrb2-sic Ceramic Composites For Hypersonic Vehicle Applications
Ultra High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) ZrB2- 10, 20, 30wt%SiC composites are of high interest for use in hypersonic air-breathing vehicles. In this work, ZrB2- 10, 20, 30wt%SiC UHTC composites were produced by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique. After sintering, almost dense ceramics with ~ 5-8% porosity were produced. Their mechanical properties, such as Young’s, shear, and bulk moduli, along with Poisson’s ratio, 4-point bending strength, and single edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) fracture toughness were measured. In addition, in-situ bending experiments under a Raman microscope were performed to determine the piezo-spectroscopic coefficients of SiC Raman active peaks for calculation of thermal residual stresses. The results show that these materials are possible candidates for hypersonic airbreathing vehicles due to their high Young’s modulus, ability to withstand high temperatures, and relatively low densities
Re-thinking "The Way We Think" – Metaphor, Metonymy & Blending in Usage-based Linguistics
Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory, two highly influential cognitive semantic theories of meaning making, have over the past years come under considerable attack from usage-based and functional branches of linguistics. This varied volume sets out to explore the expository potential of both theories within a usage-based framework and, in most contributions, offers empirically solid applications as well as suggestions for theoretical reconfigurations
Assessing Readiness for e-Health in Egypt : A Case study of Cairo University Hospitals
Implementing E-Health can improve quality of care by increasing accessibility to patient health records, improving governance and administration, and integrating health information into an organized system. However, before implementation occurs, E-Readiness Assessment is an important tool used to evaluate an organization\u27s likelihood of successful adoption. Cairo University Hospitals are still in early stages of implementation, and measures to improve E-Readiness would contribute to the transition from an almost complete lack of health information accessibility to successful adoption of an electronic system. This paper discusses how Cairo University Hospitals would be able to raise the quality of service delivery through E-Readiness and successful implementation of E-Health. Through information gathered from health officials and a case study of Cairo University Hospitals, the benefits of E-Health are reviewed and recommendations for adoption of E-Health are made
