    Demob Suits: One Uniform for Another? Burtons and the Leeds Multiple Tailors' Production of Men's Demobilization Tailoring after the Second World War

    This article focuses on the key role played by the Leeds multiple tailors in the production of tailoring for British servicemen demobilized after the Second World War. The government provided each man demobilized with a full outfit of clothing, including underwear, shoes, a hat, coat and tailored wool suit – — the latter commonly described as a ‘demob’ suit. The article explores the significance of demob suits and how they were received by the men who had to wear them, highlighting men’s concern about what they wore. The public rhetoric around the provision of demob suits will be considered within the context of the government restrictions on clothing of the 1940s and the way the suits were produced. The article argues that men’s experience of the made-to-measure system of tailoring by the Leeds multiples influenced many servicemen’s expectations about what constituted acceptable tailoring, fashion and standards of dress for their demob suits

    Fashion parades - for men only: Multiple tailor Hepworths, designer Hardy Amies and the marketing of men's suits in Britain in the 1960s

    This article will examine the use of male fashion shows as a marketing and promotional tool by British high street multiple tailor Hepworths in the 1960s as part of their design collaboration with women’s fashion designer and couturier Hardy Amies. The partnership successfully brought the concept of the branded designer label to British men for the first time and was a major initiative for the menswear industry as it highlighted and consolidated a design ethos which strongly emphasized men’s fashion. Drawing on a wide range of primary source material including oral history interviews with two male models who worked for Hepworths and Amies; object studies of surviving garments; and film and images of the shows, this article will explore the significant and innovative approach to selling men’s fashionable tailoring taken by this mid-market menswear company. It also provides a broader understanding of the history of men’s fashion during this period, a narrative which is dominated by the concept of the peacock revolution, by demonstrating Hepworths’ important contribution to everyday men’s fashion in post-Second World War Britain

    Mental health-related communication in a virtual community: text mining analysis of a digital exchange platform during the Covid-19 pandemic.

    BACKGROUND Virtual communities played an important role in mental health and well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic by providing access to others and thereby preventing loneliness. The pandemic has accelerated the urge for digital solutions for people with pre-existing mental health problems. So far, it remains unclear how the people concerned communicate with each other and benefit from peer-to-peer support on a moderated digital platform. OBJECTIVE The aim of the project was to identify and describe the communication patterns and verbal expression of users on the inCLOUsiv platform during the first lockdown in 2020. METHODS Discussions in forums and live chats on inCLOUsiv were analysed using text mining, which included frequency, correlation, n-gram and sentiment analyses. RESULTS The communication behaviour of users on inCLOUsiv was benevolent and supportive; and 72% of the identified sentiments were positive. Users addressed the topics of 'corona', 'anxiety' and 'crisis' and shared coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS The benevolent interaction between users on inCLOUsiv is in line with other virtual communities for Covid-19 and the potential for peer-to-peer support. Users can benefit from each other's experiences and support each other. Virtual communities can be used as an adjuvant to existing therapy, particularly in times of reduced access to local health services

    The molecular genetic analysis of the expanding pachyonychia congenita case collection

    BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant keratinizing disorder characterized by severe, painful, palmoplantar keratoderma and nail dystrophy, often accompanied by oral leucokeratosis, cysts and follicular keratosis. It is caused by mutations in one of five keratin genes: KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16 or KRT17. OBJECTIVES: To identify mutations in 84 new families with a clinical diagnosis of PC, recruited by the International Pachyonychia Congenita Research Registry during the last few years. METHODS: Genomic DNA isolated from saliva or peripheral blood leucocytes was amplified using primers specific for the PC-associated keratin genes and polymerase chain reaction products were directly sequenced. RESULTS: Mutations were identified in 84 families in the PC-associated keratin genes, comprising 46 distinct keratin mutations. Fourteen were previously unreported mutations, bringing the total number of different keratin mutations associated with PC to 105. CONCLUSIONS: By identifying mutations in KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16 or KRT17, this study has confirmed, at the molecular level, the clinical diagnosis of PC in these families

    Efficacy of different antifouling treatments for seawater cooling systems

    In an industrial seawater cooling system, the effects of three different antifouling treatments, viz. sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), aliphatic amines (Mexel1432) and UV radiation, on the characteristics of the fouling formed were evaluated. For this study a portable pilot plant, as a side-stream monitoring system and seawater cooling system, was employed. The pilot plant simulated a power plant steam condenser, having four titanium tubes under different treatment patterns, where fouling progression could be monitored. The nature of the fouling obtained was chiefly inorganic, showing a clear dependence on the antifouling treatment employed. After 72 days the tubes under treatment showed a reduction in the heat transfer resistance (R) of around 70% for NaClO, 48% for aliphatic amines and 55% for UV, with respect to the untreated tube. The use of a logistic model was very useful for predicting the fouling progression and the maximum asymptotic value of the increment in the heat transfer resistance (DRmax). The apparent thermal conductivity (l) of the fouling layer showed a direct relationship with the percentage of organic matter in the collected fouling. The characteristics and mode of action of the different treatments used led to fouling with diverse physicochemical properties

    Scarcity-weighted global land and metal footprints

    Resource scarcity poses an increasing threat to the supply security of modern economies. Some grand challenges ahead are the limits to agricultural expansion and the geologic scarcity of metals. To better understand the drivers behind land and metal depletion, footprint-type indicators are gaining importance. Such indicators, however, fail to differentiate between vastly different degrees of resource availability across regions. Using crop suitability areas and metal reserve base data, we calculate scarcity-weighted land and metal footprints for the major economies with the EXIOBASE global multi-regional input-output model. Scarcity-weighting causes a significant reordering of the global rankings of countries for both land and metal footprints. Land scarcity focuses mostly on cereals (∼54% from the total agricultural land used) and oil crops (∼15%), the former being notably affected by water scarcity issues in Asia and the Middle East. Metal scarcity focuses on copper ores (∼69%) and iron (∼11%), the former being a globally scarce metal impacting multiple economies. The large impact of scarcity-weighting suggests that, while non-weighted resource footprints are a valid proxy of resource use, these are not always aligned with further implications of resource depletion and supply security. In this sense, scarcity-weighting can offer an initial overview of those countries where analyses at finer scales may be more valuable. Our results also show that international trade is a major driver of land and metal depletion in some developing regions. This highlights the intersection of environmental justice and globalization, as the burden of resource depletion often falls into poorer regions which critically rely on exports

    Insulin-Like Growth Factor-Binding Protein 7 Regulates Keratinocyte Proliferation, Differentiation and Apoptosis

    Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) belongs to the IGFBP superfamily, which is involved in the regulation of IGF and insulin signaling. Recently, a global gene expression study revealed that IGFBP7 is downregulated in the psoriatic epidermis, with UVB phototherapy restoring its expression to normal. In the present study, we confirmed that IGFBP7 expression is decreased in psoriatic lesions. Given the previous data suggesting a role for IGFBP7 in the control of cancer cell growth, we investigated its involvement in the regulation of keratinocyte (KC) proliferation and differentiation, which are abnormal in psoriasis. To model IGFBP7 downregulation in vitro, we used IGFBP7-specific small interfering RNA or small hairpin RNA-expressing lentiviral vectors in HaCaT cells or primary human KCs. Downregulation of IGFBP7 was found to markedly enhance KC proliferation in both systems, was associated with a significant decrease in KC susceptibility to tumor necrosis factor-α-induced apoptosis, but did not affect senescence. Downregulation of IGFBP7 was also shown to block expression of genes associated with calcium-induced differentiation of human KCs. Finally, recombinant IGFBP7 was found to inhibit KC proliferation and enhanced their apoptosis. These data position IGFBP7 as a regulator of KC proliferation and differentiation, suggesting a potential role for this protein in the pathophysiology and treatment of hyperproliferative dermatoses such as psoriasis

    Available online at http://www.jbc.org/content/269/28/18390.full.pdf+htmlPeroxisomal beta-oxidation of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid was depressed when 1-palmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and microsomes were included in incubations. This reduction was due to the esterification of the substrate into the acceptor by microsomal 1-acyl-sn-glycero-3- phosphocholine acyltransferase. The first cycle of the beta-oxidation of 7,10,13,16-docosatetraenoic acid was independent of 1-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and microsomes. However, when arachidonate was produced it was esterified rather than serving as a substrate for continued beta-oxidation. When arachidonate and linoleate were incubated with peroxisomes alone, 2-trans-4,7,10-hexadecatetraenoic acid and 2-trans-4-decadienoic acid were the respective end products of beta-oxidation. 2-Oxo-8,11-heptadecadienone, a catabolite produced from linoleate, was most likely a nonenzymatic decarboxylation product of 3-oxo-9,12-octadecadienoic acid. In addition to the termination of beta-oxidation by microsomal-peroxisomal communication, our results with linoleate and arachidonate suggest that the reaction catalyzed by 2-trans-4-cis-dienoyl-CoA reductase is the control step in double bond removal. In addition, the beta-ketothiolase step may play a regulatory role in the peroxisomal beta-oxidation of linoleate but not arachidonate or 7,10,13,16-docosatetraenoic acid
