    Isothermal Shock Formation in Non-Equatorial Accretion Flows around Kerr Black Holes

    We explore isothermal shock formation in non-equatorial, adiabatic accretion flows onto a rotating black hole, with possible application to some active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The isothermal shock jump conditions as well as the regularity condition, previously developed for one-dimensional (1D) flows in the equatorial plane, are extended to two-dimensional (2D), non-equatorial flows, to explore possible geometrical effects. The basic hydrodynamic equations with these conditions are self-consistently solved in the context of general relativity to explore the formation of stable isothermal shocks. We find that strong shocks are formed in various locations above the equatorial plane, especially around a rapidly-rotating black hole with the prograde flows (rather than a Schwarzschild black hole). The retrograde flows are generally found to develop weaker shocks. The energy dissipation across the shock in the hot non-equatorial flows above the cooler accretion disk may offer an attractive illuminating source for the reprocessed features, such as the iron fluorescence lines, which are often observed in some AGNs.Comment: 22 pages with 11 figures, presented at 5th international conference on high energy density laboratory astrophysics in Tucson, Arizona. accepted to Ap

    Origin and interpretation of kilohertz QPOs from strange stars in X-ray binary system: theoretical hydrodynamical description

    We model and interpret the Kilohertz QPOs from the hydrodynamical description of accretion disk around a rapidly rotating compact strange star. The higher QPO frequency is described by the viscous effects of accretion disk leading to shocks, while the lower one is taken to be the Keplerian motion of the accreting matter. Comparing our results with the observations for two of the fastest rotating compact stellar candidates namely, 4U~1636-53 and KS 1731-260, we find that they match to a very good approximation, thus interpreting them as strange stars.Comment: 5 pages including 1 figure; Accepted for publication in ApJLet

    Acute-phase reactants after paediatric cardiac arrest. Procalcitonin as marker of immediate outcome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>Procalcitonin (PCT) and C reactive protein (CRP) have been used as infection parameters. PCT increase correlates with the infection's severity, course, and mortality. Post-cardiocirculatory arrest syndrome may be related to an early systemic inflammatory response, and may possibly be associated with an endotoxin tolerance. Our objective was to report the time profile of PCT and CRP levels after paediatric cardiac arrest and to assess if they could be use as markers of immediate survival.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>A retrospective observational study set in an eight-bed PICU of a university hospital was performed during a period of two years. Eleven children younger than 14 years were admitted in the PICU after a cardiac arrest. PCT and CRP plasma concentrations were measured within the first 12 and 24 hours of admission.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In survivors, PCT values increased 12 hours after cardiac arrest without further increase between 12 and 24 hours. In non survivors, PCT values increased 12 hours after cardiac arrest with further increase between 12 and 24 hours. Median PCT values (range) at 24 hours after cardiac arrest were 22.7 ng/mL (0.2 – 41.0) in survivors vs. 205.5 ng/mL (116.6 – 600.0) in non survivors (p < 0.05). CRP levels were elevated in all patients, survivors and non-survivors, at 12 and 24 hours without differences between both groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Measurement of PCT during the first 24 hours after paediatric cardiac arrest could serve as marker of mortality.</p

    Psychological and psychiatric aspects of bone marrow transplantation

    A intensidade e a complexidade envolvidas no transplante de medula óssea (TMO), em seus vários níveis, produz profundos efeitos psicológicos no paciente, na família e na equipe profissional. Ignorar esta realidade e reduzir os problemas do TMO a seus aspectos puramente técnicos pode trazer consequências catastróficas para o paciente e seus familiares e ameaçar a sobrevivência da equipe. Neste trabalho, são discutidos três aspectos muito importantes de saúde mental no TMO, enfatizando a prática desenvolvida na Unidade de TMO do HCFMRP: 1) os múltiplos papéis desempenhados pela assistência psiquiátrica na Unidade de TMO, desde a prescrição de psicofármacos até o apoio à equipe multiprofissional em grupos de reflexão; 2) uma análise dos sentimentos vivenciados pelo paciente submetido ao TMO nas diferentes fases do transplante (pré, intra e pós-TMO) sob a perspectiva da esperança de cura; 3) uma avaliação da qualidade de vida dos pacientes submetidos ao TMO, a curto e médio prazos, integrando vários instrumentos de análise, incluindo técnicas projetivas.The intensity and complexity involved in all levels of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) causes profound psychological effects on the patient, family and professional team. Ignoring this fact and reducing BMT issues to purely technical aspects may be catastrophical to the patients and his/her family and may challenge the survival of the program. In this work, three very important aspects of mental health in BMT are discussed: 1) multiple roles played by psychiatric assistance in BMT, from drug prescription through support of the team by group reflexion; 2) an analysis of emotions experienced by BMT patients in the different phases of transplantation (pre, intra- and post-) under the perspective of hope for cure ; 3) an evaluation of quality of life of patients submitted to BMT at medium and long terms, integrating various psychological instruments including projective techniques

    Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

    A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172 GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2, depending on the channel.
