    Nazione, democrazia e partiti politici

NEW INSIGHTS OF MIR-145 FUNCTION AND REGULATION IN HUMAN BREAST CANCER.

miR-145 is down-regulated in the majority of human cancers, including breast cancer (BC). However, its role remains largely unknown. Here, I provide evidence for miR-145 induced anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effect in several BC cell lines, which was not detected in BC cells lacking a functional TP53 gene and exhibiting an estrogen receptor alfa (ESR1) negative status. I found that miR-145 anti-proliferative effects were dependent upon TP53 activation and that activation of TP53 could in turn stimulates miR-145 expression. I also found that miR-145 could repress the expression of ESR1 protein by direct interaction with two sites within its gene coding sequence. My findings support the existence of a positive regulatory loop where miR-145 directly targets ESR1 and indirectly activates TP53, which in turn sustains miR-145 expression and reinforces miR-145 overall effects on proliferation and apoptosis

    Swiss Software Industry Survey 2023

In our increasingly digital world, software plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. Yet, with this growth comes a growing concern: sustainability. But how are software and sustainability related? Software not only has the power to promote sustainability but can also be sustainable itself, touching on three dimensions of sustainability: economic, ecological, and social. The ninth edition of the Swiss Software Industry Survey (SSIS) takes the opportunity to look at the topic of sustainability within the Swiss software industry. Notably, however, this SSIS Report 2023 does not solely focus on sustainability. Being the most comprehensive study of its kind in Switzerland, the report once again provides an in-depth overview of the current state, emerging trends, and long-term developments in the Swiss software industry. This year, the SSIS was conducted for the third time under the patronage of Swico, the association of the ICT and internet industry in Switzerland. This patronage ensures the future of the SSIS for the years to come. Besides, it enables us to stay at the pulse of the Swiss software industry. In this sense, we would like to thank Swico and its Interest Group “Software, Services, and Consulting” for the trust they have placed in us and look forward to working with them in the years to come. As in previous years, we would also like to thank our partners sieber&partners, tranengineering, and the Institute for Business Studies Basel (IWSB) as important supporters of the SSIS. We hope you enjoy reading this year’s SSIS Report

The growing interest of people in science events, the projects supported by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research to foster STEM teaching in different levels of the education system and the introduction of modern physics in some Italian high schools, contributed to the strengthening of interaction between schools, universities and research centers. This interaction realized in dedicated activities characterized by innovative communication and education strategies. This paper presents the events of science dissemination organized in the last years by the University of Ferrara and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics taking into account some case study differentiated by contents, recipients and education strategies.Comment: The article is written in Italia

Exploring the role of fallopian ciliated cells in the pathogenesis of high-grade serous ovarian cancer

High-grade serous epithelial ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women and the first among gynecological malignancies. Despite an initial response to standard chemotherapy, most HGSOC patients relapse. To improve treatment options, we must continue investigating tumor biology. Tumor characteristics (e.g., risk factors and epidemiology) are valuable clues to accomplish this task. The two most frequent risk factors for HGSOC are the lifetime number of ovulations, which is associated with increased oxidative stress in the pelvic area caused by ovulation fluid, and a positive family history due to genetic factors. In the attempt to identify novel genetic factors (i.e., genes) associated with HGSOC, we observed that several genes in linkage with HGSOC are expressed in the ciliated cells of the fallopian tube. This finding made us hypothesize that ciliated cells, despite not being the cell of origin for HGSOC, may take part in HGSOC tumor initiation. Specifically, malfunction of the ciliary beat impairs the laminar fluid flow above the fallopian tube epithelia, thus likely reducing the clearance of oxidative stress caused by follicular fluid. Herein, we review the up-to-date findings dealing with HGSOC predisposition with the hypothesis that fallopian ciliated cells take part in HGSOC onset. Finally, we review the up-to-date literature concerning genes that are located in genomic loci associated with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) predisposition that are expressed by the fallopian ciliated cells

Glassy magnetic behavior and correlation length in nanogranular Fe-oxide and Au/Fe-oxide samples

In nanoscale magnetic systems, the possible coexistence of structural disorder and competing magnetic interactionsmay determine the appearance of a glassy magnetic behavior, implying the onset of a low-temperature disordered collective state of frozen magnetic moments. This phenomenology is the object of an intense research activity, stimulated by a fundamental scientific interest and by the need to clarify how disordered magnetism effects may affect the performance of magnetic devices (e.g., sensors and data storage media). We report the results of a magnetic study that aims to broaden the basic knowledge of glassy magnetic systems and concerns the comparison between two samples, prepared by a polyol method. The first can be described as a nanogranular spinel Fe-oxide phase composed of ultrafine nanocrystallites (size of the order of 1 nm); in the second, the Fe-oxide phase incorporated non-magnetic Au nanoparticles (10-20 nm in size). In both samples, the Fe-oxide phase exhibits a glassy magnetic behavior and the nanocrystallite moments undergo a very similar freezing process. However, in the frozen regime, the Au/Fe-oxide composite sample is magnetically softer. This effect is explained by considering that the Au nanoparticles constitute physical constraints that limit the length of magnetic correlation between the frozen Fe-oxide moments
