In recent work we have proposed a software reliability analysis technique that uses symbolic execution and model counting to quantify the probability of reaching designated program states, e.g. assert violations, under uncertainty conditions in the environment. The technique has many applications beyond reliability analysis, ranging from program understanding and debugging to analysis of cyber-physical systems. In this paper we report on a novel application of the technique, namely Quantitative Information Flow analysis (QIF). The goal of QIF is to measure information leakage of a program by using information-theoretic metrics such as Shannon entropy or Renyi entropy. We exploit the model counting engine of the reliability analyzer over symbolic program paths, to compute an upper bound of the maximum leakage over all possible distributions of the confidential data. We have implemented our approach into a prototype tool, called QILURA, and explore its effectiveness on a number of case studie

Buccal fat pad (BFP) is a singular structure between the facial muscles. Its removal may enhance the zygomatic prominences resulting in an inverted triangle of beauty. Objective: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of literature about BFP removal for facial aesthetic improvement. In order to answer the following research question: What are the indications, complication types and rates, surgical techniques and outcomes of the technique? The initial search in Pubmed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases recognized 220 articles. The final review included eight of them. None of the included studies were clinical trials. BPF removal was performed by intraoral incision or associated with the face lift procedure. In 71 patients submitted to the procedure and evaluated about complications, only 8.45% presented minor complications. Parotid duct and facial nerve injuries were not found. No study evaluated facial aging and long-term effects, therefore the harmless effect of the procedure to those features is not clear. Although it is not a novel procedure, there is a lack of information about long-term outcomes. Thus, controlled clinical studies should be performed to achieve adequate clinical evidence of those aspects

In this study we investigated how hemostats such as oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC, TABOTAMP) and oxidized non-regenerated cellulose (ONRC, RESORBA CELL) influence local cellular behavior and contraction of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Human stromal fibroblasts were inoculated in vitro with ORC and ONRC. Cell proliferation was assayed over time, and migration was evaluated by Live Cell imaging microscopy. Fibroblasts grown in collagen-gels were treated with ORC or ONRC, and ECM contraction was measured utilizing a contraction assay. An absolute pH decline was observed with both ORC and ONRC after 1 hour. Mean daily cell proliferation, migration and matrix contraction were more strongly inhibited by ONRC when compared with ORC (p < 0.05). When control media was pH-lowered to match the lower pH values typically seen with ORC and ONRC, significant differences in cell proliferation and migration were still observed between ONRC and ORC (p < 0.05). However, in these pH conditions, inhibition of matrix contraction was only significant for ONRC (p < 0.05). We find that ORC and ONRC inhibit fibroblast proliferation, migration and matrix contraction, and stronger inhibition of these essential cellular processes of wound healing were observed for ONRC when compared with ORC. These results will require further validation in future in vivo experiments to clarify the clinical implications for hemostat use in post-surgical wound healing

Some non perturbative calculations on spin glasses

Models of spin glasses are studied with a phase transition discontinuous in the Parisi order parameter. It is assumed that the leading order corrections to the thermodynamic limit of the high temperature free energy are due to the existence of a metastable saddle point in the replica formalism. An ansatz is made on the form of the metastable point and its contribution to the free energy is calculated. The Random Energy Model is considered along with the p-spin and the p-state Potts Models in their p < infinity expansion.Comment: 12 pages, LaTe

The potential of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for increasing supply chain efficiency has been repeatedly stressed by practitioners and researchers alike. The cross-company usage of RFID applications can only work if the collaborating companies agree on the syntax and semantic used. EPCglobal, an international industry consortium, has specified a stack of specifications that enable a standardized identifier to be stored on the RFID tag and all object related data to be kept on the network. Such a standardized concept does not yet exist to store object related data on RFID tags. To minimize the coordination effort as well as the emerging interoperability or integration problems and, therefore, also guarantee wide-spread adoption of the data-on-tag approach, it is advisable to build on existing standards for the storage of data on RFID tags. In this paper, we recommend applying the ISO 13584 standard for parts libraries (PLIB). We conceptualize how to use ISO 13584 to store data on RFID tags and use a case study on a kitchen furniture manufacturer, which uses RFID tagged components in a cross-company application with its suppliers, to develop a scenario for the storage of data on RFID tags

The objective of this study was to assess endo-sinus bone gain (ESBG) following osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation with Bio-Oss Collagen (test) compared with no grafting material (control) using two- and three-dimensional radiographic methods, as part of a randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04618900). Forty healthy patients who met the necessary eligibility criteria were allocated by block randomization to either the test group (20 patients) or control group (20 patients). Cone beam computed tomography scans were obtained at enrolment (T0), immediately after surgery (T1), at delivery of the prosthetic rehabilitation (T2), and 1 year after functional implant loading (T3). Mean differences were expressed with the 95% confidence interval; significance was set at P < 0.05. ESBG was significantly increased with Bio-Oss Collagen compared with no grafting material at T1, T2, and T3 (P < 0.001). A gradual decrease in ESBG was observed over time with both treatment modalities (P < 0.001), which diminished the difference between the test and control groups at T2 and T3. ESBG was observed to be positively correlated with implant protrusion length and negatively correlated with the residual bone height. In osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation, the application of Bio-Oss Collagen underneath the elevated Schneiderian membrane improved ESBG significantly when compared with no grafting material. However, the increased ESBG seems not to have positively improved the treatment outcomes in terms of the implant stability quotient or the survival of the implants or suprastructures.</p

Dr. Xing and Professor Refvem are working to research and develop a quadruped robot that is capable of basic movements including walking, running, and jumping. As senior project group F-11, we are joining a team of engineers to assist in the development of the quadruped. Our team was tasked with creating a mathematical model, designing a control method, and implementing that control method for the quadruped\u27s legs in Simulink. This will allow both current and future students to understand the response of the system and provide a building point for future researchers to create working quadrupedal robots. This report documents our research and cumulative work to reach our goals. The report highlights our final design for the controller loop, our implementation process for each controller component, and our design verification tests to justify our work

Diabetic Cardiovascular Disease Induced by Oxidative Stress.

Get PDF
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). DM can lead to multiple cardiovascular complications, including coronary artery disease (CAD), cardiac hypertrophy, and heart failure (HF). HF represents one of the most common causes of death in patients with DM and results from DM-induced CAD and diabetic cardiomyopathy. Oxidative stress is closely associated with the pathogenesis of DM and results from overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS overproduction is associated with hyperglycemia and metabolic disorders, such as impaired antioxidant function in conjunction with impaired antioxidant activity. Long-term exposure to oxidative stress in DM induces chronic inflammation and fibrosis in a range of tissues, leading to formation and progression of disease states in these tissues. Indeed, markers for oxidative stress are overexpressed in patients with DM, suggesting that increased ROS may be primarily responsible for the development of diabetic complications. Therefore, an understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms mediated by oxidative stress is crucial to the prevention and treatment of diabetes-induced CVD. The current review focuses on the relationship between diabetes-induced CVD and oxidative stress, while highlighting the latest insights into this relationship from findings on diabetic heart and vascular disease
