From the Roots Up: (Re)Making Indigenous Women and Two-Spirit Peoples’ Relationships with Land

Despite the interference caused by waves of colonialism, Indigenous peoples are actively pursuing and preserving relationships with Land and more-than-human-beings. As Indigenous land-based education is relatively new as an academic field of study, it is important to continue to assert clear understandings of the relationships and principles that inform it, and of those that distinguish it from other forms of land-based, environmental or place- based education. It is of primary importance within the field of Indigenous land-based education to fully investigate and analyze the ways in which notions of gender operate within the movement. This dissertation centers the experiences of Indigenous women and Two-Spirit Indigenous land-based educators and practitioners in relation to the research questions: How does the gendering of land-based practices and land-based knowledges impact Indigenous peoples’ relationships with Land? and How can gender inclusive land-based education restore and strengthen these relationships? Eight interviews with Indigenous women and Two-Spirit land-based educators and practitioners, were conducted and analyzed using the voice centered relational method. In addition to the interviews, a selection of publicly circulated posters and the creative writing work of the author, were analyzed and discussed to demonstrate how the themes presented in the research operate within communities. The analysis revealed that participant experiences engaging in Indigenous land-based practices have been impacted by colonialism resulting in the disconnection of Indigenous land-based knowledges from practices, and thereby negatively impacting Indigenous women and Two-Spirit relatives’ relationships with Land and their ability to engage in land-based practices. Furthermore, in spite of gender based violences and inequities caused by colonial disruptions, Indigenous women and Two-Spirit land-based educators and practitioners resist and refuse colonialism and its manifestations as both a reaction to external forces but an important response in alignment with the ethics of relationality, relational accountability, and relational care

Parents’ Experiences during their Infant’s Transition from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to Home: A Qualitative Study

    Get PDF
Limited literature exists which examines how parents of infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) transition from their infant’s NICU hospital stay to home. This study examines the question, “What are the experiences of parents during their infant’s transition from the NICU to home? Grounded theory methods served as the paradigm to explore twelve NICU parents’ experiences during their infant’s transition. The basic social psychological process identified was “becoming a parent” which was based on the core problem “I’m not a parent.” Analysis of data contributed to a model described by the researchers as the resultant Model of Parental Progression that describes how the parents proceeded through their experiences of their infants’ transitions from the NICU to home

Female administrators perceptions of distance learning

    Get PDF
Gender disparity is evident in tenure track and tenured faculty positions at universities. However, distance education may provide more supportive environments for female academicians to grow and develop. The term distance learning is used to encompass any type of instruction delivered off campus. Distance learning has increased dramatically and has gained strategic importance possibly presenting women with a new realm for advancement. Leaders in distance learning must have qualities such as good listening skills, be understanding, engage in collaboration, be cooperative, demonstrate openness, have interpersonal sensitivity and empathy; attributes traditionally associated with females. This qualitative study utilizing a survey design, asked 21 participants, female administrators in distance education: “What are your perceptions of the role of distance learning in education today?” They perceived the role of distance learning in education today to be of utmost import and discussed the needs of learners, the access of distance learning, value of distance learning, federal and state requirements, the future of distance learning, the significant impact on Higher Education and the improvement needed

Creating Personal Metaphors About Doing Qualitative Analysis

    No full text
This study explored personal metaphors for doing qualitative analysis developed by doctoral student researchers. Data consisted of 51 metaphors to describe students’ experiences as novice qualitative researchers. The metaphors focused on three recurring themes: feeling overwhelmed, dealing with ambiguity, uncertainty, and fear of the unknown, and the need for persistence and perseverance to overcome frustration and obstacles. Findings also indicated that creating personal metaphors enabled novice researchers to: see the big picture and understand the overall process, make an abstract process more concrete, and provide a structure, touchstone, or reminder for future work. Teachers of qualitative research may find that creating personal metaphors is a useful tool for students to construct and reflect on the meaning of their research experiences

Responsibility for occupational health and safety outcomes in the labour hire industry: a tripartite arrangement?

    Get PDF
Labour hire workers are one category of a group more generally labelled contingent, temporary, precarious or casual workers. Research shows they are generally at increased risk of occupational injury and illness compared to permanent employees. It is proposed that one of the causal factors is the unique tripartite employment relationship used to engage labour hire. The dynamics and behaviours in this triangular relationship are discussed with reference to the legal and organisational uncertainty that it frequently presents. A model is proposed that suggests the occupational health and safety interdependence between the three parties. The potential occupational health and safety outcomes for the labour hire worker are examined. Apparent gaps in the existing literature are identified, along with future research opportunities

Substituent effects in aromatic detritiation reactions.

The literature on substituent effects in electrophilic aromatic hydrogen exchange reactions and in naphthalene compounds is reviewed A number of halogen-and methyl- (or methoxyl-) substituted benzenes, labelled with tritium in specific positions, and of substituted 1-tritionaphthalenes, have been prepared and their rates of detritiation in anhydrous trifluoroacetic acid have been measured by a simple scintillation counting method. The results provide a measure of the reactivities of the various aromatic positions which were labelled with tritium, and hence of the effects on these positions of the various substituents. The results for the naphthalenes are discussed in terms of the transmission of effects by conjugative, inductive and field effects and of steric (peri) interactions. The conclusions are considered in relation to the small amount of data available on the more familiar aromatic substitutions (such as bromination and nitration) and the more numerous results on side chain reactions, and some anomalies are noted. The order of decreasing interaction between the 1-position and those positions with which it can conjugate directly is 2>4>7>3. For halogen-substituted toluenes and polymethylbenzenes the deactivating effect of a chloro-or bromo-substituent on the meta position has been found to vary with the reactivity of the system: this is also true for the tritiated chloroanisoles but here the results are complicated by the fact that some interaction occurs between the methoxy-substituent and the trifluoroacetic acid
