    The study of the natural resources of San Diego Bay is a part of a high priority inventory and assessment program conducted by the Department of Fish and Game. This report is a guide for citizens, planners, administrators, and all others interested in the use and development of coastal lands and waters. It documents the status and future of natural resources that should be a part of the inheritance of future generations. References appended provide the interested and concerned reader with sources of more specific information. One of a scheduled series, this publication follows similar documents on Upper New-port Bay (Orange County), Goleta Slough (Santa Barbara County), Bolinas Lagoon (Marin County), and Elkhorn Slough (Monterey County).     Imprints of log-periodic self-similarity in the stock market

    Detailed analysis of the log-periodic structures as precursors of the financial crashes is presented. The study is mainly based on the German Stock Index (DAX) variation over the 1998 period which includes both, a spectacular boom and a large decline, in magnitude only comparable to the so-called Black Monday of October 1987. The present example provides further arguments in favour of a discrete scale-invariance governing the dynamics of the stock market. A related clear log-periodic structure prior to the crash and consistent with its onset extends over the period of a few months. Furthermore, on smaller time-scales the data seems to indicate the appearance of analogous log-periodic oscillations as precursors of the smaller, intermediate decreases. Even the frequencies of such oscillations are similar on various levels of resolution. The related value λ≈2\lambda \approx 2 of preferred scaling ratios is amazingly consistent with those found for a wide variety of other complex systems. Similar analysis of the major American indices between September 1998 and February 1999 also provides some evidence supporting this concept but, at the same time, illustrates a possible splitting of the dynamics that a large market may experience.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX-REVTeX, 4 PS figures.     Near threshold Lambda and Sigma production in pp collisions

    A model calculation for the reactions pp→pΛK+pp\to p\Lambda K^+ and pp→NΣKpp\to N\Sigma K near their thresholds is presented. It is argued that the experimentally observed strong suppression of Σ0\Sigma^0 production compared to Λ\Lambda production at the same excess energy could be due to a destructive interference between the π\pi and KK exchange contributions in the reaction pp→pΣ0K+pp\to p\Sigma^0 K^+.     Nuclear Many-Body Theory of Electroweak Interactions with Nuclei at Intermediate Energies

    The Quasi-Elastic (QE) contribution of the nuclear inclusive electron model developed in reference \cite{GNO97} is extended to the study of electroweak Charged Current (CC) induced nuclear reactions at intermediate energies of interest for future neutrino oscillation experiments. Long range nuclear (RPA) correlations, Final State Interaction (FSI) and Coulomb corrections are included within the model. RPA correlations are shown to play a crucial role in the whole range of neutrino energies, up to 500 MeV, studied in this work. Predictions for inclusive muon capture for different nuclei through the Periodic Table and for the reactions 12^{12}C (νμ,μ−)X(\nu_\mu,\mu^-)X and 12^{12}C (νe,e−)X(\nu_e,e^-)X near threshold are also given.Comment: Talk given by J. As the use of hematopoietic transplant has expanded, so too has the source of stem and progenitor cells. The predominate source of stem and progenitors today, particularly in settings of autologous transplantation, is mobilized peripheral blood. This review will highlight the historical advances which lead to the widespread use of peripheral blood stem cells for transplantation, with a look towards future enhancements to mobilization strategies

    Natural resources of Lake Earl and Smith River Delta

    The Lake Earl/Smith River Delta area is a key coastal wetland situated in northern California. The Lake and Delta have retained much of their value to wildlife and serve as an important link in a chain of such wetlands that extend southward along the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to South America. Millions of water-associated birds of the Pacific Flyway utilize these areas as feeding and resting stops along their migration paths. In California, these wetlands also serve as a significant portion of the available wintering grounds for a major share of the birds within the flyway. The Smith River is also one of the State's most productive salmon and steelhead streams. Anadromous fish produced here provide thousands of angler use days to sport fishermen and contribute substantially to the commercial fishing catch off the northern coast. Because of the importance of coastal wetlands to the fish and wildlife of California, the Department of Fish and Game has initiated a high priority statewide inventory and assessment of these wetlands. This publication is an integral part of that program. This report identifies specific resources and uses; directs attention to problems; and recommends courses of action needed to insure resource protection. It is intended as a guide for citizens, planners, administrators and other interested in the use and development of California's coastal land and waters. (132pp.
