Selectivity in regeneration of the oculomotor nerve in the cichlid fish, Astronotus ocellatus

It has long been considered a general rule for nerve regeneration that the reinnervation of skeletal muscle is nonselective. Regenerating nerve fibers are supposed to reconnect with one skeletal muscle as readily as another according to studies covering a wide range of vertebrates (Weiss, 1937; Weiss & Taylor, 1944; Weiss & Hoag, 1946; Bernstein & Guth, 1961; Guth, 1961, 1962, 1963). Similarly, in embryogenesis proper functional connexions between nerve centers and particular muscles are supposedly attained, not by selective nerve outgrowth but rather through a process of ‘myotypic modulation’ (Weiss, 1955) that presupposes nonselective peripheral innervation. Doubt about the general validity of this rule and the concepts behind it has come from a series of studies on regeneration of the oculomotor nerve in teleosts, urodeles, and anurans and of spinal fin nerves in teleosts (Sperry, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1965; Sperry & Deupree, 1956; Arora & Sperry, 1957a, 1964)

Theodore Sperry and Gladys Galligar were two respected research professors who taught several branches of biology, and were specialized in ecology and plant physiology, respectively. Outside of their teaching careers, both of them were involved with conservation, bird banding and studying native flora and animals. This collection contains correspondences, biographical materials, clippings, materials from organizations, academic materials, research materials, publications by and not by Sperry and Galligar, travel materials, Paradocs materials, Sperry’s military materials, financial and antique records, photographs and slides, genealogy materials and miscellaneous materials.https://digitalcommons.pittstate.edu/fa/1098/thumbnail.jp

Pensar con imágenes: una experiencia de "metaformación" en el aprendizaje

From the concesion of the Nobel prize to Sperry, studies about the brain have acquired a predominant role in the present science. We explain three representative approaches the cerebral hemisphere (Sperry), the triple brain (MacLean) and the total brain (Herrmann). Our purpose is to analyze the repercussions of this research on the field of learning: styles of thinking and learning, to learn with all senses, the affectiveness a basic component, the positive atmosphere creation, ...through an experience. We show an experience about to "learn with pictures", sketches and simulations, to create teaching resources. One main conclusion is that who learns is the "whole person" and "to learn to think" means a possible change in learning and in methodological strategies.

Facebook Brand Communities and Social Capital

    Get PDF
This study examines the role of social media-based marketing in generating social capital by analyzing wall posts and comments on Facebook pages of a for-profit social enterprise (TOMS) and a conventional for-profit company (Sperry Top-Sider). Our content analysis shows that compared to the Sperry Facebook page, the TOMS Facebook page featured a higher proportion of wall posts involving community engagement and social issues. While aspects of bonding social capital were most prominent in both Facebook pages, the TOMS online community was more likely to generate bridging social capital than the Sperry online community. These results suggest that the social entrepreneurship aspect of TOMS contributes to information exchanges between weak ties and forging of new ties via its brand community on Facebook. This research enhances our understanding of differences and similarities between for-profit social enterprises and conventional for-profit companies in use of social media for public relations and their implications for creating a dialogic space essential for facilitating development of social capital
