An asymmetric arcsecond radio jet from Circinus X-1
In observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array we have resolved
the radio counterpart of the unusual X-ray binary Cir X-1 into an asymmetric
extended structure on arcsecond scales. In order to quantify the asymmetry we
have redetermined as accurately as possible both the optical and radio
coordinates of the source. The extended emission can be understood as a
compact, absorbed core at the location of the X-ray binary, and extended
emission up to 2 arcsec to the southeast of the core. The arcsec-scale extended
emission aligns with the larger, more symmetric arcmin-scale collimated
structures in the surrounding synchrotron nebula. This suggests that the
transport of mass and/or energy from the X-ray binary to the synchroton nebula
is occurring via the arcsec-scale structures. The ratio of extended flux from
the southeast to that from the northwest of the core is at least 2:1.
Interpreted as relativistic aberration of an intrinsically symmetric jet from
the source, this implies a minimum outflow velocity of 0.1 c. Alternatively,
the emission may be intrinsically asymmetric, perhaps as a result of the high
space velocity of the system.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. Three figure
Weak CSS Sources from FIRST Survey
We report early results of an observational campaign targeted on a sample of
compact steep spectrum sources selected from the FIRST survey which are
significantly weaker than those investigated before. The selection criteria and
procedure are given in detail. We present here an assortment of MERLIN and VLBI
observations and make some general comments based on the morphologies of the
sources presented.Comment: A contribution to The Third Workshop on GHz-Peaked Spectrum and

Genome sequence of Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans OS1
Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans, an obligate anaerobe of the phylum Synergistetes, was isolated from oil production water. It has the unusual ability to produce almost 4 molecules H2/molecule glucose. The draft genome of A. hydrogeniformans OS1 (DSM 22491T) is 2,123,925 bp, with 2,068 coding sequences and 60 RNA genes
Research and Development of Automated Eddy Current Testing for Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels
Eddy current testing (ET) was used to scan bare metallic liners used in the fabrication of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for flaws which could result in premature failure of the vessel. The main goal of the project was to make improvements in the areas of scan signal to noise ratio, sensitivity of flaw detection, and estimation of flaw dimensions. Scan settings were optimized resulting in an increased signal to noise ratio. Previously undiscovered flaw indications were observed and investigated. Threshold criteria were determined for the system software's flaw report and estimation of flaw dimensions were brought to an acceptable level of accuracy. Computer algorithms were written to import data for filtering and a numerical derivative filtering algorithm was evaluated
