SARA LEE FOODS TAKES FLIGHT: AN ECONOMIC IMPACT ANALYSIS OF A TURKEY PLANT CLOSURE

In 1998, the Sara Lee Corporation implemented a corporate strategy of deverticalization. Bil Mar Foods, Inc., a subsidiary of Sara Lee responsible for the processing of packaged meat products, followed the strategy by shutting down its turkey slaughter facility in Zeeland, Michigan. As a consequence, turkey growers in Michigan were left with no viable outlet for live bird slaughter and the potential end of live bird production in the region. This study analyzes the economic impact associated with the cessation of live bird slaughter at the Bil Mar Foods plant. The economic consequences may be as high as an $81 million loss in total industry output, a$29 million loss in income, and a total employment loss of nearly 800 jobs. The Many Hats of Sonic Hedgehog Signaling in Nervous System Development and Disease.

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling occurs concurrently with the many processes that constitute nervous system development. Although Shh is mostly known for its proliferative and morphogenic action through its effects on neural stem cells and progenitors, it also contributes to neuronal differentiation, axonal pathfinding and synapse formation and function. To participate in these diverse events, Shh signaling manifests differently depending on the maturational state of the responsive cell, on the other signaling pathways regulating neural cell function and the environmental cues that surround target cells. Shh signaling is particularly dynamic in the nervous system, ranging from canonical transcription-dependent, to non-canonical and localized to axonal growth cones. Here, we review the variety of Shh functions in the developing nervous system and their consequences for neurodevelopmental diseases and neural regeneration, with particular emphasis on the signaling mechanisms underlying Shh action

Battling the Stigma: HIV Screening in Resident Primary Care Clinic

INTRODUCTION: HIV affects ~1.2 million in the US, with 25% unaware of their statusand annual incidence of 50,000. Early detection and treatment reduces risk of AIDS-related deaths and transmission. Both the CDC and the US Preventative Service Task Force recommend routine HIV screening. The Providence Medical Group at St Vincent (PMG-STV) resident clinic has no routine screening protocol. • 24% (757/3139) of all clinic patients have ever been screened. • Of active clinic patients seen quarterly, 5% are offered screening with only 3% completing screening. We implemented and measured a clinic-wide HIV screening protocol leveraging existing clinic workflows. We aimed to increase screening of active clinic patients from 3% to 25% at one year. METHODS: Using a time-series design we measured quarterly rates of HIV screening tests ordered and resulted in active clinic patients, ages 18-65 and seen in office, during the study period. We utilized a pre-existing preventative healthcare workflow for routine cancer screening, influenza vaccines, etc. We introduced this workflow to residents and staff prior to our go-live date. RESULTS / DISCUSSION: Our primary outcome was to increase quarterly HIV screening rate of active patients, with a secondary outcome to increase overall clinic HIV screening rate. The Co-creation design framework

Co-creation is a valuable activity for organisations, but it can be costly if there is limited understanding of when co-creation is appropriate and for what purpose. Frow et al. (2015) developed the Co-Creation Design Framework as a strategic management and reflection tool for co-creative activity, with the view of helping firms to plan for and seek out co-creative innovation opportunities. However, there are notable limitations: the framework is firm centric, expert reliant and product development focused. By analysing case studies of Masters Student projects which encompass the contexts of social innovation and service design, the current study expands the framework scope. A Developed Co-Creation Design Framework is presented with adaptations and additions to the original, creating a strategic management tool which can be used in product, service and social innovation within an education setting. Directions for future research are given to help expand and refine the framework further
