The reliability history of twt's in space applications is documented by considering: (1) the generic parts of the tube in light of the manner in which their design and operation affect the ultimate reliability of the device, (2) the flight experience of medium power tubes, and (3) the available life test data for existing space-qualified twt's in addition to those of high power devices

    On the basis of perturbed Kolmogorov backward equations and path integral representation, we unify the derivations of the linear response theory and transient fluctuation theorems for continuous diffusion processes from a backward point of view. We find that a variety of transient fluctuation theorems could be interpreted as a consequence of a generalized Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, which intrinsically arises from the Markovian characteristic of diffusion processes

    Finite sampling effects on generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations for steady states

    We study the effects of the finite number of experimental data on the computation of a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation around a nonequilibrium steady state of a Brownian particle in a toroidal optical trap. We show that the finite sampling has two different effects, which can give rise to a poor estimate of the linear response function. The first concerns the accessibility of the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation due to the finite number of actual perturbations imposed to the control parameter. The second concerns the propagation of the error made at the initial sampling of the external perturbation of the system. This can be highly enhanced by introducing an estimator which corrects the error of the initial sampled condition. When these two effects are taken into account in the data analysis, the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation is verified experimentally

    On anomalous diffusion and the out of equilibrium response function in one-dimensional models

    We study how the Einstein relation between spontaneous fluctuations and the response to an external perturbation holds in the absence of currents, for the comb model and the elastic single-file, which are examples of systems with subdiffusive transport properties. The relevance of non-equilibrium conditions is investigated: when a stationary current (in the form of a drift or an energy flux) is present, the Einstein relation breaks down, as is known to happen in systems with standard diffusion. In the case of the comb model, a general relation, which has appeared in the recent literature, between the response function and an unperturbed suitable correlation function, allows us to explain the observed results. This suggests that a relevant ingredient in breaking the Einstein formula, for stationary regimes, is not the anomalous diffusion but the presence of currents driving the system out of equilibrium.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Energy dissipation in a nonequilibrium steady state is studied in driven quantum Langevin systems. We study energy dissipation flow to thermal environment, and obtain a general formula for the average rate of energy dissipation using an autocorrelation function for the system variable. This leads to a general expression of the equality that connects the violation of the fluctuation-response relation to the rate of energy dissipation, the classical version of which was first studied by Harada and Sasa.     Current fluctuations in stochastic systems with long-range memory

    We propose a method to calculate the large deviations of current fluctuations in a class of stochastic particle systems with history-dependent rates. Long-range temporal correlations are seen to alter the speed of the large deviation function in analogy with long-range spatial correlations in equilibrium systems.     The Digital Life of Walkable Streets

    Walkability has many health, environmental, and economic benefits. That is why web and mobile services have been offering ways of computing walkability scores of individual street segments. Those scores are generally computed from survey data and manual counting (of even trees). However, that is costly, owing to the high time, effort, and financial costs. To partly automate the computation of those scores, we explore the possibility of using the social media data of Flickr and Foursquare to automatically identify safe and walkable streets. We find that unsafe streets tend to be photographed during the day, while walkable streets are tagged with walkability-related keywords. These results open up practical opportunities (for, e.g., room booking services, urban route recommenders, and real-estate sites) and have theoretical implications for researchers who might resort to the use social media data to tackle previously unanswered questions in the area of walkability.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, Proceedings of International World Wide Web Conference (WWW 2015
