Electrified hydraulic power steering system in hybrid electric heavy trucks
Over the last 20 years, conventional automotive engine ancillaries have migrated from being mechanically powered to electrically powered in order to meet market demand. To adopt this trend in heavy trucks requires a higher power electrical system in order to cope with the higher loads placed upon it. Until the advent of the hybrid electric heavy truck (HET) this power infrastructure has not been available. HET's require a higher voltage system in order to reduce losses and provide adequate power and voltage levels for the traction motor. This study investigates for the first time the benefit of electrifying a hydraulic power assisted steering system in an HET. The developed electrical hydraulic power steering (EHPS), using a high-voltage traction battery, is found to drastically reduce the consumed energy over a drive cycle by optimal operation of the pump over the driving cycle. Simplified Automatic Fault Detection in Wind Turbine Induction Generators
This paper presents a simplified automated fault detection scheme for wind turbine induction generators with rotor electrical asymmetries. Fault indicators developed in previous works have made use of the presence of significant spectral peaks in the upper sidebands of the supply frequency harmonics; however, the specific location of these peaks may shift depending on the wind turbine speed. As wind turbines tend to operate under variable speed conditions, it may be difficult to predict where these faultârelated peaks will occur. To accommodate for variable speeds and resulting shifting frequency peak locations, previous works have introduced methods to identify or track the relevant frequencies, which necessitates an additional set of processing algorithms to locate these faultârelated peaks prior to any fault analysis. In this work, a simplified method is proposed to instead bypass the issue of variable speed (and shifting frequency peaks) by introducing a set of bandpass filters that encompass the ranges in which the peaks are expected to occur. These filters are designed to capture the faultârelated spectral information to train a classifier for automatic fault detection, regardless of the specific location of the peaks. Initial experimental results show that this approach is robust against variable speeds and further shows good generalizability in being able to detect faults at speeds and conditions that were not presented during training. After training and tuning the proposed fault detection system, the system was tested on âunseenâ data and yielded a high classification accuracy of 97.4%, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed approach
Validation of a non-contact technique for torque measurements in wind turbines using an enhanced transient FSV approach
In-service turbine monitoring is essential for maximizing the wind energy contribution to the global energy budget. Measurement of turbine shaft torque under transient wind conditions is fundamental to develop reliable condition monitoring techniques. Contact based measurements bring their own disadvantages and non-contactless measurements have many potential advantages. However, their performance needs to be validated against standard methods. This paper focuses on the development of an enhanced transient Feature Selective Validation (FSV) techniques to undertake this analysis with an emphasis on transient data processing. The nature of FSV makes it a natural technique to consider for this problem space. Open questions have existed as to how transients should be dealt with in FSV. This paper overcomes the limitations of previous approaches for step-function transient comparison and presents analytical methods to ensure the transient feature itself is considered, irrespective of how much pre- and post- transient data happens to be included
Design and Validation of a Synchronous Reluctance Motor With Single Tooth Windings
This paper presents for the first time the analysis and experimental validation of a six-slot four-pole synchronous reluctance motor with nonoverlapping fractional slot-concentrated windings. The machine exhibits high torque density and efficiency due to its high fill factor coils with very short end windings, facilitated by a segmented stator and bobbin winding of the coils. These advantages are coupled with its inherent robustness and low cost. The topology is presented as a logical step forward in advancing synchronous reluctance machines that have been universally wound with a sinusoidally distributed winding. The paper presents the motor design, performance evaluation through finite element studies and validation of the electromagnetic model, and thermal specification through empirical testing. It is shown that high performance synchronous reluctance motors can be constructed with single tooth wound coils, but considerations must be given regarding torque quality and the d-q axis inductances
HRTEM study of orthorhombic zirconia in MgO-PSZ
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was used to study the phase of orthorhombic ZrO2 formed in magnesia partially stabilized zirconia (MgO-PSZ) during HRTEM specimen preparation. Based on the three reported crystal structures of orthorhombic ZrO2, with the space groups Pbcm, Pbc2(1) and Pbca, here it is shown that orthorhombic ZrO2 formed in MgO-PSZ has the Pbcm structure
Non-collinear magnetic structures: a possible cause for current induced switching
Current induced switching in Co/Cu/Co trilayers is described in terms of
ab-initio determined magnetic twisting energies and corresponding sheet
resistances. In viewing the twisting energy as an energy flux the
characteristic time thereof is evaluated by means of the
Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation using ab-initio parameters. The obtained
switching times are in very good agreement with available experimental data. In
terms of the calculated currents, scalar quantities since a classical Ohm's law
is applied, critical currents needed to switch magnetic configurations from
parallel to antiparallel and vice versa can unambiguously be defined. It is
found that the magnetoresistance viewed as a function of the current is
essentially determined by the twisting energy as a function of the relative
angle between the orientations of the magnetization in the magnetic slabs,
which in turn can also explain in particular cases the fact that after having
switched off the current the system remains in the switched magnetic
configuration. For all ab-initio type calculations the fully relativistic
Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and the corresponding Kubo-Greenwood

Increased activity of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in purified cell suspensions and single cells from the uterine cervix in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.
The activities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase have been measured in squamous epithelial cells of the uterine cervix from normal patients and cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). A biochemical cycling method, which uses only simple equipment and is suited to routine use and to automation, was applied to cells separated by gradient centrifugation. In addition, cells were examined cytochemically, and the intensity of staining in the cytoplasm of single whole cells was measured using computerised microcytospectrophotometry. Twenty per cent of cells in samples from normal patients (n=61) showed staining intensities above an extinction of 0.15 at 540 nm, compared to 71% of cases of CIN 1 (n=14), 91% of cases of CIN 2 (n=11) and 67% of cases of CIN 3 (n=15). The cytochemical data do not allow definitive distinctions to be made between different grades of CIN whereas the biochemical assay applied to cell lysates shows convincing differences between normal samples and cases of CIN. There are no false negatives for CIN 3 (n=14) and CIN 2 (n=10) and 11% false negatives for CIN 1 (n=9) and 14% of false positives for normal cases (n=21). The results of this preliminary study with reference to automation are discussed [corrected]
Momentum Flux Spectra of a Mountain Wave Event Over New Zealand
During the Deep Propagating Gravity Wave Experiment (DEEPWAVE) 13 July 2014 research flight over the South Island of New Zealand, a multiscale spectrum of mountain waves (MWs) was observed. High-resolution measurements of sodium densities were available from ~70 to 100 km for the duration of this flight. A comprehensive technique is presented for obtaining temperature perturbations, TâČ, from sodium mixing ratios over a range of altitudes, and these TâČ were used to calculate the momentum flux (MF) spectra with respect to horizontal wavelengths, λH, for each flight segment. Spectral analysis revealed MWs with spectral power centered at λH of ~80, 120, and 220 km. The temperature amplitudes of these MWs varied between the four cross-mountain flight legs occurring between 6:10UT and 9:10UT. The average spectral TâČ amplitudes near 80 km in altitude ranged from 7â13 K for the 220 km λH MW and 4â8 K for the smaller λH MWs. These amplitudes decayed significantly up to 90 km, where a critical level for MWs was present. The average MF per unit mass near 80 km in altitude ranged from ~13 to 60 m2/s2 across the varying spectra over the duration of the research flight and decayed to ~0 by 88 km in altitude. These MFs are large compared to zonal means and highlight the importance of MWs in the momentum budget of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at times when they reach these altitudes
