Many college graduates will enter young adulthood poised for success. Some may stumble at first, and still others will fall. What sets them on different pathways? To answer this question, we’ve started a landmark longitudinal research study to look at the connections between financial success and well-being in a diverse group of first-year college students: Arizona Pathways to Life Success for University Students (APLUS). APLUS examines the factors that help shape students’ financial attitudes and behaviors and, in turn, how those attitudes and behaviors affect their current and future success in life. Using data from 2,000+ students, this report summarizes our findings to date regarding how students spend their time and money, financial literacy and practices, debt management and well-being

Financial Influences Impacting Young Adults’ Relationship Satisfaction: Personal Management Quality, Perceived Partner Behavior, and Perceived Financial Mutuality

In this study, we investigated the extent to which young adults’ (n=274) personal financial management quality and perceived partners’ financial behavior were associated – both directly and indirectly via perceived financial mutuality – with relationship satisfaction in committed relationships. The study was grounded in Social Exchange Theory (SET). A path analysis revealed that perceived partner’s financial behavior had a direct association with perceived financial mutuality, which, in turn, had a direct association with relationship satisfaction. In contrast, the participant’s financial management quality and relationship satisfaction were not directly associated nor was they indirectly associated through perceived financial mutuality. Perceived financial mutuality had the largest effect on relationship satisfaction. These findings indicate that perceived financial mutuality plays a key role both directly and as a mediator on relationship satisfaction for these young adults. The implications of the findings provide insights for designing preventive financial strategies early in romantic relationships

This paper reports preliminary findings from a study on financial behaviors of college students. Objectives of the study are to identify factors associated with financial behaviors and to examine associations between financial behavior and quality of life of the students surveyed. Results of bivariate analyses show that frequencies of performing positive financial behaviors are associated with many factors, such as attitude toward performing the behavior, perceived control, parental influence, peer influence, class standing, etc. In addition, performing desirable financial behaviors is positively associated with financial satisfaction, physical health, mental health, academic performance and satisfaction, and life satisfaction

Financial Adaptation Among College Students: Helping Students Cope with Financial Strain

This study examines the impact of the recent financial crisis on co-occurring patterns of change in financial strain and financial coping behaviors of college students (N=748) using two-timed, longitudinal data collected prior to the 2008 financial crisis and again one year later. Using a stress and coping framework, we found that different measures of perceived change in financial strain acted as antecedents of change in types of financial coping behaviors. We discuss the importance of these findings in developing the financial decision-making skills that young adults need in an era of increasing responsibility for their financial futur

Beneficial Effects of a Curcumin Derivative and Transforming Growth Factor-β Receptor I Inhibitor Combination on Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Background Curcumin 2005-8 (Cur5-8), a derivative of curcumin, improves fatty liver disease via AMP-activated protein kinase activation and autophagy regulation. EW-7197 (vactosertib) is a small molecule inhibitor of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) receptor I and may scavenge reactive oxygen species and ameliorate fibrosis through the SMAD2/3 canonical pathway. This study aimed to determine whether co-administering these two drugs having different mechanisms is beneficial. Methods Hepatocellular fibrosis was induced in mouse hepatocytes (alpha mouse liver 12 [AML12]) and human hepatic stellate cells (LX-2) using TGF-β (2 ng/mL). The cells were then treated with Cur5-8 (1 μM), EW-7197 (0.5 μM), or both. In animal experiments were also conducted during which, methionine-choline deficient diet, Cur5-8 (100 mg/kg), and EW-7197 (20 mg/kg) were administered orally to 8-week-old C57BL/6J mice for 6 weeks. Results TGF-β-induced cell morphological changes were improved by EW-7197, and lipid accumulation was restored on the administration of EW-7197 in combination with Cur5-8. In a nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)-induced mouse model, 6 weeks of EW-7197 and Cur5-8 co-administration alleviated liver fibrosis and improved the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) activity score. Conclusion Co-administering Cur5-8 and EW-7197 to NASH-induced mice and fibrotic hepatocytes reduced liver fibrosis and steatohepatitis while maintaining the advantages of both drugs. This is the first study to show the effect of the drug combination against NASH and NAFLD. Similar effects in other animal models will confirm its potential as a new therapeutic agent

La coopération interparlementaire au sein de l'Union européenne

The thesis seeks to answer the following question: is inter-parliamentary cooperation in the EU (hereinafter the IPC) able to contribute to reinforcing the EU’s democratic legitimacy? Resulting to a large extent from the gap between the European Parliament and the national parliaments as a result of the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage, the necessity of the IPC has progressively increased since 1979. In the context where the blind angle of the parliamentary control on the EU expands resulting from the development of the European politics taken by the intergovernmental method, it appears from this study that the IPC can be a device which could lead to strengthen the democratic legitimacy of the EU’s acts thanks to the complementarity between the European Parliament and the national parliaments. In assessing the IPC through a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis, this thesis not only leads us to understand the limits and the potential benefits of the IPC but also identifies possible solutions to consolidate it. Going beyond this analysis, this thesis affirms that through the benchmarking of the IPC, other inter-parliamentary co-operations at a global level, which remain parliamentary diplomacy, can together contribute to the creation of a world parliament, a bold project on which many questions weigh.

A Typology of Information Search Patterns: Apparel Selection of Employed Women

    Get PDF
The purposes of this study were to: (1) identify segments displaying different information search patterns among employed purchasers of apparel; (2) to determine the consumer, situational, product, and market characteristics that correlate with each segment; and (3) to develop an exploratory framework of the processes which produce characteristics of information search patterns. A random sample of 3,000 female consumers, age 25-44, was sent questionnaires resulting in a 47 percent return rate (n=1410). Only employed women were used for this research (n=1034). Principal Components Factor Analysis with Varimax Rotation was used: (a) to find out factors of information search activities, and (b) to reduce lifestyle items and evaluate criteria items. Multiple regression was performed to examine the influence of consumer, situational, product, and market characteristics on the information search patterns. Five factors were extracted representing different patterns underlying the information search activities used by employed women for the selection of employment apparel. They included print-oriented, audio-visual oriented, store intensive, professional advice, and pal advice searcher. Five profiles of employed women information search patterns were developed by capturing the characteristics of consumer, product, and situation. A schematic diagram of the relationship between patterns of information search and the constructs of self-confidence, systematic/heuristic processing and active/passive search was provided within an exploratory framework of the process which produce characteristics of information search patterns. Therefore, an understanding of consumer information search activities is essential in the design of efficient communication among consumer, marketers, and regulators
