The paper presents results of studies on the synanthropic flora of Sieradz and Zduńska Wola carried out between 1977- -1981. The Synanthropic flora of these towns is characterized by its big diversification and rich variety, which is connected with differentiation of habitats. It includes 502 species in Sieradz (S) and 426 in Zduńska Wola (ZW). Among vascular plants there prevail apothytes (61.6 per cent in Sieradz, and 61.7 per cent in Zduńska Wola).Zadanie pt. Fir-Oak-Hombeam Forest Regeneration in the „Jamno” Reserve

The present study describes changes that have occured in the phytocoenosis of Pino-Quercetum abieieiosuni in the „Jamno” reserve. It was determined that the vegetation of this reserve, due to its high dynamics, recovers to its natural form of Tilio-Carpinetum lypicum with Abies alba. The disapperance of Pinus silvestris from all layers of the phytocoenosis and an essential increase in Carpinus betulus and Quereus rohur in the tree-stand was observed. A slight quantitative increase in Abies alba in the tree-stand was also noticed. Changes in the field layer consist mainly in the extinction of species typical of coniferous and increase in species typical of deciduous forests.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 zostało dofinansowane ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę

Students’ view of Quantum Information Technologies

The article is a sort of advanced publication workshop prepared by a group of M.Sc. students in ICT participating in the course on QIT. The idea behind the publishing exercise is to try to link, if possible, individual own work just under realization for the thesis with new unique possibilities offered by the QIT. Each chapter is written by a single author defining concisely her/his research interest in the classical ICT field and trying to find possible correlations with respective abruptly developing branches of the QIT. The chapter texts are somehow moderated by the tutor but are exclusively authored by young researchers. The aim was to present their views on the possible development directions of particular subfields of QIT, if not fully mature, but still based on their own ideas, research and dreams

Dose-dependent relationship between prenatal exposure to fine particulates and exhaled carbon monoxide in non-asthmatic children : a population-based birth cohort study

Objectives: The main goal of the study was to assess possible association between fetal exposure to fi ne particulate matter (PM2.5) and exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO) measured in non-asthmatic children. Material and Methods: The subjects include 118 children taking part in an ongoing population-based birth cohort study in Kraków. Personal samplers of PM2.5 were used to measure fi ne particle mass in the fetal period and carbon monoxide (CO) in exhaled breath from a single exhalation effort at the age of 7. In the statistical analysis of the effect of prenatal PM2.5 exposure on eCO, a set of potential confounders, such as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), city residence area, sensitization to house dust allergens and the occurrence of respiratory symptoms monitored over the seven-year follow-up was considered. Results: The level of eCO did not correlate with the self-reported ETS exposure recorded over the follow-up, however, there was a positive signifi cant relationship with the prenatal PM2.5 exposure (non-parametric trend p = 0.042). The eCO mean level was higher in atopic children (geometric mean = 2.06 ppm, 95% CI: 1.58–2.66 ppm) than in non-atopic ones (geometric mean = 1.57 ppm, 95% CI: 1.47–1.73 ppm) and the difference was statistically signifi cant (p = 0.036). As for the respiratory symptoms, eCO values were associated positively only with the cough severity score recorded in the follow-up (nonparametric trend p = 0.057). In the nested multivariable linear regression model, only the effects of prenatal PM2.5 and cough severity recorded in the follow-up were related to eCO level. The prenatal PM2.5 exposure represented 5.1%, while children’s cough represented only 2.6% of the eCO variability. Conclusion: Our study suggests that elevated eCO in non-asthmatic children may result from oxidative stress experienced in the fetal period and that heme oxygenase (HO) activity in body tissues may be programmed in the fetal period by the exposure to fi ne particulate matter

    Neuroendocrine tumours of rare location

(Endokrynol Pol 2010; 61 (3): 322-327)Neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) arising from dispersed endocrine system may originate from almost every location, although they are most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system. NETs are considered as particularly rare if they constitute less than 1% of all neuroendocrine tumours. The aim of the paper is to present ten rare NETs from the database of the Endocrinology Department of the Jagiellonian University, Medical College: 4 NETs of the ampulla of Vater, 2 of the gallbladder, and 1 of the ovary, sphenoid sinus, Meckel’s diverticulum, and epiglottis. The clinical presentation of such tumours and their management are discussed. (Pol J Endocrinol 2010; 61 (3): 322-327
