Myths and Facts about a Career in Software Testing: A Comparison between Students’ Beliefs and Professionals’ Experience
Testing is an indispensable part of software development. However, a career in software testing is reported to be unpopular among students in computer science and related areas. This can potentially create a shortage of testers in the software industry in the future. The question is, whether the perception that undergraduate students have about software testing is accurate and whether it differs from the experience reported by those who work in testing activities in the software development industry. This investigation demonstrates that a career in software testing is more exciting and rewarding, as reported by professionals working in the field, than students may believe. Therefore, in order to guarantee a workforce focused on software quality, the academy and the software industry need to work together to better inform students about software testing and its essential role in software development

Charting a Path to Efficient Onboarding: The Role of Software Visualization
Background. Within the software industry, it is commonly estimated that
software professionals invest a substantial portion of their work hours in the
process of understanding existing systems. In this context, an ineffective
technical onboarding process, which introduces newcomers to software under
development, can result in a prolonged period for them to absorb the necessary
knowledge required to become productive in their roles. Goal. The present study
aims to explore the familiarity of managers, leaders, and developers with
software visualization tools and how these tools are employed to facilitate the
technical onboarding of new team members. Method. To address the research
problem, we built upon the insights gained through the literature and embraced
a sequential exploratory approach. This approach incorporated quantitative and
qualitative analyses of data collected from practitioners using questionnaires
and semi-structured interviews. Findings. Our findings demonstrate a gap
between the concept of software visualization and the practical use of
onboarding tools and techniques. Overall, practitioners do not systematically
incorporate software visualization tools into their technical onboarding
processes due to a lack of conceptual understanding and awareness of their
potential benefits. Conclusion. The software industry could benefit from
standardized and evolving onboarding models, improved by incorporating software
visualization techniques and tools to support program comprehension of
newcomers in the software projects
Seasonal Patterns of the Foraging Ecology of Myrmelachista arthuri Forel, 1903 (Formicidae: Formicinae)
Temporal dynamics of foraging activity, diet and habitat are key to understanding the bioecology of ants. These patterns are poorly studied in many Neotropical species, such as those belonging to genus Myrmelachista. In the present work, we investigate the foraging behavior and diet of M. arthuri and describe aspects of their food-searching behavior. We recorded the dynamics of workers exiting and entering nests built in the stems of native Atlantic forest trees during the cold/dry and warm/wet seasons. Food items carried by workers were also counted and identified. Myrmelachista arthuri foraged throughout the day, but worker activity became more intense as temperature increased and moisture declined, regardless of the season, and especially in the afternoon. This species had a generalist diet: 92% of the food items were live or dead arthropods or their remains, and a small proportion consisted of plant materials, such as seeds. Arthropod fragments, mostly of M. arthuri workers, represented the largest proportion of the diet, followed by whole Collembola individuals. Food items did not vary between seasons, the number of items was higher in the cold/dry season. The results of this work contribute to the understanding of M. arthuri biology, especially related to foraging dynamics
“Dungeons and troubles”: uma proposta de RPG educativo sobre genética para o Ensino Médio/ “Dungeons and Troubles”: a proposal for educational Role Playing Games about Genetics to High School
Low occurrence of Hepatitis A virus in water samples from an urban area of Southern Brazil
Hepatitis A virus (HAV), a member of Picornaviridae family, is the main causative agent of acute viral hepatitis in the world, mainly in developing countries. HAV may be present in contaminated water and food and its presence is often associated to a lesser extent with socioeconomic factors and environmental quality. The main goals in the present study were to standardize a cell culture combined to a polymerase chain reaction protocol for the detection and quantification of viral viability and analyze whether the virus could be found in water samples collected in four urban streams of Sinos River watershed. Virus recovery was assayed from known virus concentrations measured in experimentally contaminated raw and ultrapure water (MilliQ®). Recovery rates ranged from 270% in raw water to 15,000% in ultrapure water. In a second step, a qPCR coupled to a previous passage in cells, demonstrated more analytical sensitivity when compared to samples assayed without a previous passage in cell cultures. HAV genome was detected in only 1 of 84 samples analyzed, pointing to a very low occurrence of HAV in water samples in the studied region. These findings are remarkable, since no more than 5% of the domestic sewage in this area is treated pointing to a low occurrence of HAV in the population living nearby during the study period
Would You Like to Motivate Software Testers? Ask Them How
Considering the importance of software testing to the development of high quality and reliable software systems, this paper aims to investigate how can work-related factors influence the motivation of software testers. Method. We applied a questionnaire that was developed using a previous theory of motivation and satisfaction of software engineers to conduct a survey-based study to explore and understand how professional software testers perceive and value work-related factors that could influence their motivation at work. Results. With a sample of 80 software testers we observed that software testers are strongly motivated by variety of work, creative tasks, recognition for their work, and activities that allow them to acquire new knowledge, but in general the social impact of this activity has low influence on their motivation. Conclusion. This study discusses the difference of opinions among software testers, regarding work-related factors that could impact their motivation, which can be relevant for managers and leaders in software engineering practice
Patient satisfaction with pharmacy services: translation and validation of the Pharmacy Services Questionnaire for Brazil
The aim of this study was to translate into Portuguese and validate the Pharmacy Services Questionnaire (PSQ). The instrument includes 20 questions that measure user satisfaction with pharmacy services, and is organized according to two factors. It uses a Likert scale of answers from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). The PSQ-Brazil was applied to 137 diabetics from 31 to 89 years of age (60.6% women), clients of private pharmacies, mostly users of public health services (65.7%), with low education (67.9% elementary schooling or less), and who used an average of 4.3 medicines per person. Overall score in the sample was 3.6 (SD = 1.1 [95%CI 3.4-3.8]). After factor analysis, “pleasant exposure” and “treatment management” included 8 and 12 items, respectively, and were significantly correlated with each other (r = 0.92, p < 0.001) and with the overall score. The instrument obtained a Cronbach's alpha of 0.98 for the overall score. The pleasant exposure and treatment management variables showed alphas of 0.94 and 0.98. PSQBrazil shows adequate reliability and validity for use in the country
